- Carson Daly hosts week two of the vocal competition series, featuring an exciting array of talented vocalists as they compete to be selected by one of the coaches and fight for a chance to win the title of being named "The Voice."
- "The Voice" - Blind Auditions #2 - Feb. 6, 2012
We get a quick recap of last night.
Then the coaches launch into a medley of Prince songs including "1999," "Little Red Corvette," "I Wanna Be Your Lover," and "Kiss." They sound great and everybody gets a little solo spotlight.
First up is Hailey and Leland who perform in a group called the Line in Nashville. They're not a couple but people think they are. They come out and sing "American Girl" by Tom Petty, it's spirited and cute. Blake turns first before he even realizes they're a duo. Christina turns during the breakdown and then Adam and finally Cee Lo. They pick Christina and she gloats.
Next up is Jamar Rogers who some "American Idol" fans may remember as Danny Gokey's best buddy. We visit him in New York where we learn he volunteers for charity, was a former meth addict, and is HIv positive. He was once hopeless but now has hope. Carson shows up to give him his invitation to audition for the show. He is thrilled. He idolizes Cee Lo so he's excited. His mom comes along to show support. He sings "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes, souling it up with a voice that can be husky and smooth. Cee Lo presses his button first. He is the only one to turn. Jamar fans out on Cee Lo. All the judges think he and Cee Lo are a match made in heaven. His mother is thrilled.
Next up is Neal Middleton who is a long-haired rocker in a top hat. He's also a husband and a dad to two little kids. He doesn't have health insurance and wants to provide for his family. He was also in a very bad accident 8 years ago and told he wouldn't walk again. His wife and kids have come to the audition. He sings "I Heard it Through the Grapevine." He does sort of southern rock and bar band version of it. He's strong but a little screamy. No one turns for Neal. They all say they liked him but it was just not dynamic enough.
We get a montage of folks who couldn't get the chairs to turn.
Next up is Gwen Sebastian. She's 37 and grew up singing with her family. She's foregoing having kids at the moment to focus on music and her husband/drummer supports this. She sings "Stay" by Sugarland. She has a girlish but strong country voice. Blake turns first and then Cee Lo. Adam turns on the last note. She picks Blake.
Next up is Kim Yarbrough who is 50 who has been singing since she was 18 but it never happened for her and she worked at some crummy jobs.
Except it's a bait and switch and we move over to Pamela Rose the daughter of a single mom. She sings "Already Gone" by Kelly Clarkson. She's a little breathy and shaky at first. She's a little stronger on the belted part of the chorus but not incredible by any means and has some pitch problems. No one turns for her. Cee Lo is disappointed when he sees how beautiful she is. They all point out her pitch issues. She's very gracious.
Now we're back to Kim Yarbrough. She sings "Tell Me Somethin' Good" by Rufus and Chaka Khan. She actually looks a little Chaka. She's good but this is like a back-up singer spotlight in a bigger artist's show. Adam turns first, then Christina. Blake weighs the two judges for her, pointing out that Adam won last year. She picks Adam.
Next is Staff Sgt. Angie Johnson, she's in the Air Force and sings with the Air Force band. She sings for her fellow troops. We see a clip of her singing Adele and she's pretty great. That clip was uploaded to You Tube and got a million hits. She sings "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar, she's strong, not spectacular but very good and kills it on the last note. Cee Lo turns first and is alone. She's all his.
Next is Dez Duron who is a Yale football player from Louisiana. He left school and the team to audition. His dad is also a football player/singer who won a Grammy. He sings "I Want it That Way" by the Backstreet Boys. He's okay in a boy band-y way. He sounds nervous in terms of breath control and hits a couple of bad notes. The judges are egging each other on. But none of them do. Ouch. They all bag on Adam for not turning around. Christina's mad she didn't turn because he's so cute.
Next is Lindsey Pavao who is very afraid of choking because she has before. She sings "Say Aah" and has a kitteny, growlish voice. She puts a fun spin on the tune. Christina turns first, then Cee Lo a bi later, followed by Blake which surprises Adam who never turns around. They all love her hair and voice and Blake hears the Fiona Apple influence. They fight for her and she picks Christina.
Next is Jermaine Paul a guy who has sung back up for and opened for Alicia Keys for years. He's hoping to move from the background to the foreground. His daughter told him about the show. Alicia sends him a taped message.
But before we actually see him sing we meet Hoja Lopez. She's 25 and heavyset and wants to be heard for her voice. Seh sings "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry. She's having a little trouble controlling the melody and sounds nervous. She might be great but this isn't a great audition and she trails off as no one turns around. Blake calls it good but not what he was looking for. Adam calls it nerves and she agrees.
We come back to Jermaine who sings "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne. He also starts off sounding nervous but clearly has a great voice. He busts it out in the chorus. Cee Lo turns. As does Blake. Jermaine says it's nice that they want him but he wants to hear the word keep. Cee Lo goes to need but won't commit to keep. Blake says "keep" is up to him. Cee Lo says the people will help with the keep part. Jermaine keeps playing them asking what they'll give him. He picks Blake. Cee Lo is disappointed.
The final contestant is Angel Taylor the youngest of five siblings who had an abusive father and whose mother left him. She sings "Someone Like You" by Adele and she starts strong, a little affected but right in the pocket, and very connected. The low notes are a little tough for her but the chorus is right in good register for her. Adam turns first, followed by Blake, and then Cee Lo. Only Christina is unmoved. The crowd loves her as well. She confesses a massive crush on Blake. He says he doesn't know what he can do for her but he'll be damn proud to try. Adam says he does know what he can do for her. She picks Adam.
