Raging Bull: Outside the Ring (2005)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Third entry in the four-part documentary series that can be found on MGM's Special Edition of RAGING BULL. Martin Scorsese, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty, Irwin Winkler, Robert Chartoff, Frank Vincent, Michael Chapman and Thelma Schoonmaker are interviewed about the stuff that was shot in New York. After the boxing scenes were filmed, the crew returned to NY where they filmed all the character stuff and we really get a great idea of what went into the filming and how much of what they did actually didn't work in the end. There's talk about the first cut of the movie and the fact that everyone involved knew that something wasn't right. They talk about taking out all sorts of scenes where Jake was pretty much looking back on his life. There's also talk about how the ON THE WATERFRONT speech came to be as well as the final Bible passage at the very end of the film. This is probably the most interesting documentary in the series because it's fascinating to hear how much was actually changed during editing and how the movie originally didn't work. There's also some great stories about DeNiro demanding that the production be shut down so that he could actually gain the weight. Other great stories include United Artist wanting them to cut out the entire jail sequence. Fans of the film should find this extremely entertaining and certainly worth viewing.
