Director Jai Mehta, who is receiving a lot of acclaim for his latest web series ‘Lootere’, has said that he is an actor’s director, in the sense that he believes in jamming with the actors over a scene and see what they can bring to the table outside of the scope of the script.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta spoke about his “single largest” contribution to son Jai Mehta’s ‘Lootere’. He said that he was there in the role of “somebody who used all the tricks in the Indian filmmaking book.”
Hansal Mehta, the showrunner of ‘Lootere’, said: “The biggest challenge was to make a series like Lootere on such scale within a budget. How does one achieve a story like this with a scale like this without going overboard with the cost, without compromising on the storytelling, and without compromising on the director’s vision.”
“Without it compromising on how Jai wanted to tell the story? My role was primarily to see that Jai’s larger vision did not get compromised because of any constraints and that he can tell the story freely.”
He added: “So I was there in the role of somebody who used all the tricks in the Indian filmmaking book.

Lootere(2 episodes, Disney + Hotstar)
Jai Mehta turns out to be quite a chip off the old block, though I doubt Hansal would like to be called a block. Jai’s debut series Lootere, is an assured piece of work with just the right doses of all the ingredients that go into successful storytelling.
Mehta Jr has selected an unusual plot (highsea piracy) and an unexplored location. Somalia looks agreeable through Jai Mehta’s ambitious lenses. This is a series designed for the large screen. The scaling down, however, doesn’t diminish the viewing pleasure.
Set in and around Somalia, Lootere is the story of an Indian-origin entrepreneur grappling with the tense politics of the region while attempting to look into his rather extravagant self-interest. The skilled Vivek Gomber plays a nasty machiavellian businessman in Somalia named Vikrant Gandhi. He wants to not only rule the entrepreneurship of the land but also dominate the local politics.

The first episode of Lootere ended with the Vista ship being hijacked by Somali pirates. Most of the crew of the ship were hidden, while the captain and Mudit were the only people on the deck facing the wrath of the pirates. Vikrant Gandhi in Mogadishu was desperate to divert his consignment from the port in the capital city to another town and remained in the hope that this would help bring down the chances of a scandal that could affect his current job at the port authority.

Director Jai Mehta, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming streaming show ‘Lootere’, said that the toughest casting to pull off on the show was that of the pirates. The series stars Rajat Kapoor, Vivek Gomber, Amruta Khanvilkar, and Aamir Ali, and presents the story of a ship caught in the web of pirates in international waters.
The right casting plays an important role in bringing alive this mix on screen, and director Jai Mehta revealed the challenges faced during the casting process.
Elaborating on the same, Jai said: “The most difficult parts to cast for were the pirates. We found a few actors from Gujarat who looked like Africans but they were actually Gujaratis. Even for the casting for the Captain’s role, we had a whole process in place. Ultimately, we all believed that we needed to make this look real and believable.”

Indian streamer Disney+ Hotstar is planning a major push into animation content for adults.
The push follows the success of Graphic India’s 3D animation “The Legend of Hanuman,” the third season of which debuted earlier this month to a critical and audience reception that the streamer is happy with. The series is derived from ancient Indian mythological epic “The Ramayana.”
“There are so many stories around around ‘The Ramayana’ that are remaining to be told. We feel that this is a franchise, which has lots of storytelling left, and we want to really scale up and build this world in an exciting manner,” Gaurav Banerjee, head, content, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM (Hindi-language speaking markets) Entertainment Network at broadcaster Disney Star, told Variety.
Disney+ Hotstar is teaming with Graphic India again for another adult animation series, which will be unveiled within the next six months, but it is coy about specific details at the moment.
