Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first, and we’ve previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus season 2), Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson, who has a large following on his parent-run Tik Tok account. Now Deadline reports that Jeffery Self of Search Party and The...

Billy Eichner is honoring the cultural impact of “Sex and the City” on the queer community.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the “Satc” premiere, Eichner spoke with People magazine about the impact of seeing real gay bars onscreen in the New York City-based HBO series.
“My girlfriends and my gay friends were the exact right people to be pulled in by ‘Sex and the City,'” Eichner said. “I would have people over to my apartment every Sunday night and we would watch it religiously. It was one of the only shows that created what, at that time, felt like a more authentic — not perfectly authentic — look at gay men and our relationships with women.”
The “Bros” star added, “The conversations the women were having felt like conversations that I was having with my friends. You just never saw them depicted that way. It was representing women and gay men,...

While Billy Eichner is certainly not the first person to bring explicitly queer stories to a mass audience, I do agree with him about the viability of bringing joyful queer stories to the big screen. Streamers have been beating studios at their own game with the releases of "Fire Island" and "Crush" this year alone. But then that opens up a bigger conversation about queer folks being represented on theaters screens in the same manner as heterosexual folks. Unfortunately, the release of "Bros" has made this a bit more complicated.
After an extensive marketing campaign, "Bros" sadly underperformed at the box office, raking in just under 9 million against a 22 million budget so far. The film stars Billy Eichner as Bobby, a self-professed loner whose cracks start to get filled in once he stumbles onto a beautiful man named Aaron (Luke Macfarlane). Let’s just get it out of the way immediately: “Bros” did not do as well at the box office as expected. Instead of the projected 10 million opening weekend, it made just 4.8 million, despite near universal positive reviews and a solid A Cinemascore. But a disappointing debut can’t take away what Billy Eichner accomplished with “Bros”: a funny, raunchy and sincere studio-backed movie packed with queer folks that tells a story about gay men in love.
Eichner, best known for his wild, Emmy-nominated interview series “Billy on the Street,” co-wrote “Bros” with director Nicholas Stoller and stars as a New York City museum curator who falls for a jock lawyer (Luke Macfarlane).
As has been noted many times, Eichner is the first openly gay man to co-write and star in his own studio movie — which just happens to be the first studio-backed gay romantic comedy featuring an all LGBTQ+ cast.

A New Yorker Festival panel with actor and comedian Billy Eichner and playwright and actor Harvey Fierstein, who both appear in Bros, turned into an onstage post-mortem about the gay rom-com’s disappointing opening.
Fierstein, who has a cameo role in the film, criticized Universal’s “history-lesson” marketing and the studio’s decision to open it wide given that the high-stakes release pattern meant that the pitch took a hectoring turn. It then had to cajole a broad cross-section of people to buy tickets, not an easy feat even before the climate grew even dicier for theatrical comedies coming out of Covid. The result: a 4.8 million weekend, about 40 below expectations.
In his signature rasp, Fierstein blasted “the whole idea of putting this movie out with this idea of, ‘The first ever gay movie! Starring a gay homo! And written by a big homo … but produced by heterosexuals! I mean, ‘Is...

“Success has many fathers,” the old saying goes, “but failure is an orphan.” Nonetheless, that orphan has no shortage of forensic surgeons ready to give it an autopsy. As early as Saturday of the opening weekend of the Universal gay romantic comedy “Bros,” the Monday-morning quarterbacking began, as various corners of the internet came forward with their reasons why the film’s grosses were a disappointment.
The marketing was too focused on its status as the first major-studio LGBTQ rom-com! It was too white! The poster was off-putting! The title was vague! Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane aren’t big enough names to open a movie! People don’t go to rom-coms during Halloween season! People don’t go to rom-coms, full stop! The reasons seemed endless. Sometimes they were thoughtful. Sometimes.

Billy Eichner is on the defense after the underwhelming results of Bros at the box office. The actor is clapping back at Twitter trolls that are using the performance of the romantic comedy at the movie theaters to attack the quality of his work.
“Box office, as we all know, has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of a movie. And tweeting about a movie you haven’t actually seen is meaningless. That’s just twitter bulls**t. The majority of people who see Bros really love it! Go check it out and see for yourself!” he tweeted.
In a second tweet, Eichner promised to “continue tweeting about Bros every day for the next year just to spite” all the haters.
“Go Bros!!! I Love This Movie!!” he added.
And yes I’m going to continue tweeting about Bros every day for the next year just to spite you!

Universal’s “Bros,” the LGBTQ rom-com that was positioned to help lift a miserable September box office, has proven to be the latest big-screen disappointment with an underwhelming 4.8 million opening weekend.
What went wrong? After its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, critics heaped praise on the film — which has a 91 Rotten Tomatoes score — especially as the first rom-com released by a major studio with a principal cast consisting entirely of LGBTQ actors. The film, produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Nicholas Stoller from a screenplay he co-wrote with lead star Billy Eichner, also won over moviegoers who did show up, earning the film an A on CinemaScore and an 80 positive rating on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak.

Actor Billy Eichner didn’t hold back when taking to Twitter on Sunday to comment on the dismal box office opening of his new comedy, Bros.
The Universal film — which marks the first gay romantic comedy released by a major Hollywood studio — debuted to a dismal 4.8 million after doing little business in much of middle America and the south.
“Everyone who Isn’T a homophobic weirdo should go see Bros tonight! You will have a blast! And it is special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on a big screen, esp for queer folks who don’t get this opportunity often. I love this movie so much. Go Bros!!!,” tweeted Eichner.

Despite glowing reviews and a robust marketing campaign for the LGBTQ romantic comedy “Bros,” the Billy Eichner-fronted film tumbled at the box office on opening weekend. And Eichner – who also co-wrote the film with director Nicholas Stoller – puts the blame on straight people not showing up.
“Rolling Stone already has ‘Bros’ on the list of the best comedies of the 21st century. What’s also true is that at one point a theater chain called Universal and said they were pulling the trailer because of the gay content (Uni convinced them not to),” Eichner said on Twitter. “America, f—- yeah, etc etc.”
“Bros” was crafted as a Hollywood romantic comedy with two men as the romantic leads, and was marketed as the first major studio film with members of the LGBTQ+ community in every major role on screen.

It was a case of haves and have-nots for box office newcomers this weekend, with Paramount’s “Smile” beating box office expectations with a 22 million opening from 3,645 theaters while Universal’s “Bros” fell well short of its projections with just 4.8 million from 3,400 locations.
“Smile,” which was projected for an opening in the high teens against its 17 million production budget, actually saw a slight 4 increase in grosses from Friday to Saturday, beating industry estimates which had predicted a slight decrease after the film earned audience scores of B- on CinemaScore and a 69 positive rating on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak.
While those scores could signal a more frontloaded box office run, the word-of-mouth among hardcore horror fans still seems to be running pretty strong and giving “Smile” a chance to match the 23.6 million opening of Universal/Blumhouse’s “The Black Phone” from earlier this year if Sunday numbers also beat projections.

“Smile,” the unsettling Paramount horror about grins, murder and suicide, has earned 2 million from Thursday previews at the domestic box office. On the other side of the cinematic spectrum, Universal’s “Bros,” a romantic comedy with entirely LGBTQ cast, has grossed 500,000.
As the two movies face off at the box office this weekend, “Smile” is expected to earn the top spot over “Bros” and defending champ, “Don’t Worry Darling,” which has earned 25.5 million in its first week of release. The horror movie is projected to earn between 16 million and 20 million this weekend. Paramount will be smiling from ear to ear with a box office haul anywhere in that range, seeing as the low-budget fright fest cost a measly 17 million to make.
Meanwhile, “Bros” is targeting a box office debut of 8 million to 10 million this weekend. If projections hold, that’s a mediocre result. But the film only cost Universal 22 million to make,...

Surprisingly, the idea to make the first studio LGBTQ romantic comedy did not originally spawn from its gay writer/star Billy Eichner, but rather his co-writer and director Nicholas Stoller. Stoller, who first cast Eichner in “Neighbors 2,” saw the potential early on when he cast him for a second time in his Netflix series “Friends from College.”
“I loved him from from ‘Billy on the Street,’” Stoller said during an interview for IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “And then we screened the first episode of that show in a movie theater and every time he was on screen, the audience exploded with laughter. Let’s get the historical housekeeping out of the way first: “Bros” is the first gay rom-com to be released by a major studio, an accomplishment with its share of codicils — there have been other queer films released by majors but they weren’t romantic comedies, there have been LGBTQ+ films of all stripes released by studios, but always by their indie shingle.
That’s a lot of historical baggage for any one film to have to carry, but it matters that the film succeeds at the rom-com just as much as it deserves notice for its narrowly defined status as “first.” Star and co-writer Billy Eichner spins a lot of plates here, crafting a hilarious and heartfelt film that also acknowledges the challenging and often hidden history of queer people in American society.

After years of declarations about the death of the romantic comedy, Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s recent commercial hit “The Lost City” proved there’s still a place on the big screen for meet-cute stories.
Now, comedian and actor Billy Eichner is taking a stab at the feel-good genre with “Bros,” an R-rated romantic comedy that opens in 3,300 North American theaters on Friday. The movie, from Universal Pictures, is aiming to generate 8 million to 10 million in its opening weekend. It’s not a huge number, but the film carries a modest 22 million production budget.
“Bros” is debuting in theaters alongside Paramount’s R-rated chiller “Smile,” which is projected to cast a toothy glow over the domestic box office charts with 16 million to 20 million. That’s a stellar result given that it only cost the studio 17 million to make.

September has been notoriously more off-kilter than normal with no movie opening north of 20 million – at least, so far. The month isn’t over, and two movies opening wide this weekend will make an effort to keep film lovers satisfied until some of the bigger holiday and awards fare. This will be a particularly interesting week since both new flicks will open in north of 3,000 theaters, and they’re so different from each other, business could essentially be split between them. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Billy Eichner has returned to the streets, this time with actor Jack Black, to promote his upcoming romantic comedy “Bros,” out in theaters Sept. 30.
“Its gonna be a hot one!” Black says when Eichner asks if he is ready to roam the streets of Hollywood to tell people to go see the film, produced by Judd Apatow.
Eichner and Black start out by asking bystanders to name a film Black has starred in to win free tickets tot the film. Two ladies cannot come up with any titles, much to Black’s agony, until one guesses “The Hangover,” but Eichner and Black simultaneously scream “No!” and run away.

According to your calendar, Autumn officially began this week. I know, I know… Nature itself may disagree, like say in the form of triple-digit temperatures that make the average trip to the mailbox feel like a 5K through Hell itself. But we’ll do our best to put you in the mind of falling leaves, cool breezes, millions of pumpkin-spice-laced products… and new movies coming in Fall 2022.
Anyhow, we like to think Fall is a state of mind – and what better way to escape summer suffering than a trip to the movies, or an air-conditioned chill session on a comfy sofa? Okay, other methods might exist, but that’s for another site. We’re all about cinema here – so let’s get down to the only calendar that really matters: a list of upcoming movies we’d like to check out this season.

Are we witnessing the start of the “Bros” Cinematic Universe?
Billy Eichner stars in the Universal Pictures rom-com as the director of an LGBTQ history museum who falls for a hunky attorney (Luke Macfarlane). After scoring positive reactions at TIFF, Variety was on the movie’s premiere red carpet in New York City Tuesday night to ask if a potential sequel could be in the works.
“Billy and I’ve been joking about [the possibilities], I’m not sure what it would be,” Macfarlane told Variety. “The truth is, in any relationship, those early months are the best. And then the reality of life sets in and you got to figure out how you’re going to spend all that time with somebody.”
He continued, “I trust the brilliance of Billy Eichner to come up with something clever for three years down the road.”
Macfarlane hopes a second movie would include musical scenes.

Kevin Hart’s “Die Hart 2: Die Harter” has added John Cena, Ben Schwartz and Paula Pell to its cast. Additionally, Nathalie Emmanuel is set to return to the series.
“Die Hart” and the upcoming second season follow Hart as he plays a fictional version of himself. Tired of being the comedic sidekick, he decides to train at an action school to become a leading man.
The second season of the Roku comedy began production on Wednesday in Atlanta.
Here’s a logline for Season 2, which includes more about the new roles: “After achieving his dream of becoming a bona fide action hero in ‘Die Hart,’ Kevin Hart now wants to cement his legacy as the greatest action star of all time. The citizens of New York City have been safe from being screamed at by Billy Eichner for the last few years, but that’s all about to change. Traditional marketing campaigns certainly have their merit: logical, reliable, and unlikely to end with random New Yorkers shrieking in confusion. But you know what's 10 times better than that? Watching Paul Rudd and Billy Eichner dash through the streets of New York, handing out dollar bills to every person who promises to turn up on September 30, when "Bros" arrives in theaters. That's right, Billy is back on the streets but this time he's on a very specific mission.
Next week marks the release of Eichner's Universal romcom "Bros," which is described as the story of "two gay men maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They're both very busy." The film is a collaboration between Eichner, writer-director Nicholas Stoller, and producer Judd Apatow.
"Bros" is giving the world two things that it desperately needs: a new romantic comedy on the big screen and the first major studio rom-com to feature a primarily LGBTQ cast.

“Bros” writer and star Billy Eichner brought back his popular comedic segment “Billy on the Street” with special guest Paul Rudd as a promotional video to round up crowds of straight people and convince them to go see his movie, hitting theaters starting Sept. 30.
The first pair of men the comedian and actor approach react positively to unexpectedly seeing Rudd, but when Eichner informs them that “there’s a lot of gay sex in” his movie and one of the men says “whoa,” the two hosts swiftly move along.
Later, Eichner tells another stranger on the street, “Sir, Paul Rudd demands that you see ‘Bros,’” and the man is a little too game. “I’m in,” he says, before asking when it’s playing and if Rudd can physically carry him to the theater.

The Toronto International Film Festival audience’s emphatic response to “Bros” was preordained. As the co-writer and star of a gay New York romcom patterned after “You’ve Got Mail” and “When Harry Met Sally,” Billy Eichner spent months talking up the movie as a representational milestone. While “Fire Island” was the first high-profile gay love story to come out this year, the Searchlight-produced movie written by lead Joel Kim Booster was released straight to Hulu over the summer. That means Eichner can brag that he’s the first openly gay man to write and star in a major studio movie — and one with an all-gay cast, including the straight characters.
“Bros” leans into that significance at every turn. Eichner’s starring role as a grouchy podcaster who discovers an unexpected romantic connection with the beefy and basic Aaron (Luke Macfarlane) takes an overdone formula and douses it in queerness,...

After 120 years, give or take, Hollywood finally has a mainstream queer rom-com answer to films like Nora Ephron’s “You’ve Got Mail” and “Sleepless in Seattle.” Hell, it’s taken just as long to make a mainstream LGBTQ movie that isn’t about pain and suffering or trauma or systemic homophobia. Enter screenwriter/star Billy Eichner and director Nicholas Stoller’s “Bros,” .
The actual breaking of ground is that the cast is top-to-toe gay, gay, gay… and that’s pretty much where it stops. The screenplay’s contours are broadly conventional, but that’s a good thing. When we talk about wanting to be seen, a lot of us really mean that what we want is a gay version of our ’90s rom-coms when the genre was at its best. “Bros” fits the bill.

Billy Eichner knows much has been written and lauded about Nick Stoller’s Bros being the first gay romantic comedy from a major Hollywood studio as it had its world premiere on Friday night at the Toronto Film Festival.
“But we have to acknowledge the decades of LGBTQ folks who did not get this opportunity, right? Ok, so everyone likes us now. But why did it take so long? I think that’s a question worth asking,” Eichner said at the Bros press conference in Toronto on Saturday morning.
The Bros star also paid tribute to Universal for getting behind the gay rom-com. “They could have wanted some soft, cheesy sitcom thing and we gave them a hard R Apatow/Stoller rom-com, which is very unapologetic, and they’ve gotten behind it in a major way, so we’re thankful,” Eichner said.

Funny, sweet and occasionally pointed, Nicholas Stoller’s Bros (cowritten by star Billy Eichner) is a gay rom-com with a personality crisis. Though it makes lots of jokes at the expense of corporate types who would co-opt gay culture for prestige or water it down for straight consumption, it slowly reveals itself to be almost exactly like every guy-girl love story that has made money in the last thirty years. Described as satire in TIFF materials and elsewhere, it’s anything but. Forget movies that want to squeeze non-straight love into a heteronormative mode: Eichner wants his love story to be even more formula-bound — to be Ephronormative.
That will be exactly what many multiplex-goers want, and what many of the performer’s followers expect: Fans of the riotous Billy on the Street and the aptly named Difficult People might estimate that his love...

Being a "first" for representation in film is both an honor and, more often than not, a clear sign of larger systemic problems. So it is with "Bros," a film that holds the distinction of being the first gay rom-com by a major studio with a primarily Lgbtqia+ main cast. Check that: It's the first movie of that ilk to be given a wide theatrical release, lest anyone accuse me of trying to erase Andrew Ahn's utterly delightful "Fire Island" (which premiered on Hulu earlier this year) from its rightly-earned place in the echelons of queer cinema.
Billy Eichner stars in "Bros" as Bobby, a 40-something live-to-work type podcaster and museum head who's shocked to find himself stumbling into a romance with Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), a macho lawyer and his polar opposite. It's a classic set-up for a mainstream rom-com about a straight couple, the kind Hollywood has been...

“Bros” star and writer Billy Eichner is clarifying the comments he made in a Variety cover story that many perceived to be a dig at Hulu’s queer rom-com “Fire Island.”
“This is not an indie movie,” the actor originally said. “This is not some streaming thing which feels disposable, or which is like one of a million Netflix shows. I needed to appreciate that ‘This is a historic moment, and somehow, you’re at the center of it. You helped create it.’”
“Bros,” which hails from Universal Studios, is the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio set for theatrical distribution, whereas “Fire Island” was a Searchlight Pictures production that premiered exclusively on Hulu on June 3.

Billy Eichner has revealed that he was kicked off of Tinder again last year, bringing his strike count up to two.
During a 2019 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the openly-gay 43-year-old actor and comedian explained that he had been removed from the dating app after the company thought he was a catfish pretending to be Eichner.
After which, the company sent him a care package apology, which included a T-shirt and mugs with “World’s Hottest Single” and “Happy Valentine’s Day... to Me” printed on them.
Now, in a new interview with Variety, Eichner admitted his Tinder privileges have been rescinded for a second time.
“I was like, ‘F*** it. I’m not going through this again,’” the Billy on the Street star said. “I can’t book a late-night talk show appearance just to get reinstated on Tinder. I’ll stick to Hinge and Grindr and everything else.

Oops, it happened again. Billy Eichner, eligible gay bachelor, was kicked off Tinder. Somehow, the team behind the dating app had the audacity to boot Eichner from its screens because they thought he was a random loser pretending to be Billy Eichner. Eichner, 43, went public with his Tinder travails during a 2019 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmy Live,” and got an apology from the company along with a care package shipped to his home with T-shirts and mugs that said, “World’s Hottest Single” and “Happy Valentine’s Day … to Me.”
And then, inexplicably, Eichner got dumped from the service a second time last year. “I was like, ‘Fuck it. “Bros,” the meta all-queer rom-com from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” scribes Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller, wanted to find the next “openly gay Ryan Reynolds or an openly gay Paul Rudd” to play the love interest opposite Eichner’s lead.

Eichner continued, “We’ve never had an openly gay Ryan Reynolds, or an openly gay Paul Rudd, or an openly gay Kevin Hart, they just do not exist. Hollywood did not allow for it.”
“Bros” stars an entirely Lgtbq+ cast and centers on Eichner playing a podcast host who is tasked with...

On Wednesday evening in New York City — about 60 miles and a ferry ride away from its subject— “Fire Island,” Joel Kim Booster’s romantic comedy about a weekend spent in New York’s chosen queer haven, held its premiere at the Sva Theatre.
On 23rd Street in Chelsea, guests including Alok Viad-Menon, Jackie Cox, Peppermint and John Cameron Mitchell, as well as stars Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, Conrad Ricamora and James Scully assembled to celebrate the film as part of New York’s NewFest Pride. You could have lifted the premiere’s guest list from any summer weekend spent at the Pines, something to be celebrated for a new film distributed by a gatekeeper studio like Searchlight Pictures.
“Fire Island has had a long history of being a safe haven for closeted queer people in the city to be themselves,” director Andrew Ahn told Variety at the premiere. “Not unlike this.

Call it fate, or luck, but whatever you call it, Joel Kim Booster was vacationing on Fire Island when he first picked up “Pride and Prejudice.”
The 34-year-old comedian and actor grew up watching BBC’s miniseries of the same name and later fell in love with the movie starring Keira Knightley. But it wasn’t until he devoured a hard copy that he noticed the striking similarities between the beloved gay mecca off the coast of New York’s Long Island and Jane Austen’s classic novel about high society, hasty judgement and haphazard romance.
“I remember putting the book down and being like, ‘Man, her observations about class are not only so funny, but relevant to what we’re experiencing right now on this island,” recalls Booster, who has written for “Billy on the Street,” “Big Mouth” and “The Other Two.” “The whole thing started as a joke:...

Today brings a little bit of cinema history right along with it. That may sound a bit dramatic but it also happens to be true as Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for "Bros." The upcoming comedy, which comes from Billy Eichner, who co-wrote and stars in the film, is actually the first-ever romantic comedy from a major studio about gay men. That is no small thing. But aside from making a bit of history, it also happens to look pretty damn funny. And filthy. We should warn this is very much an Nsfw...
