“It’s still feels quite shocking,” says Adolescence star Erin Doherty of the show’s unprecedented success. Since its debut on Netflix on March 13, the limited series has skyrocketed to the top of the ratings charts, breaking records for viewership as well as garnering impressive awards buzz.
Doherty was working with the show’s co-creator Stephen Graham on another project, A Thousand Blows, when he happened to mention he was writing what would become Adolescence. A few months later, he called with the official offer for her play Briony, a child psychologist assigned to evaluate Jamie (Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old accused of murdering a classmate. Their chess match of a therapy session, which plays out over the course of an hour in the series’ third episode, veers from friendly banter to raw hostility, unmasking the tensions simmering below the surface of the angry teen.

'A Thousand Blows' & 'The Outlaws' Star James Nelson-Joyce Emerges as the New James Bond Frontrunner

A new name has suddenly emerged as a potential favorite for the next James Bond. English actor James Nelson-Joyce has seen his odds improve after revealing that, should he be given the opportunity, he would love the chance to play 007 in whatever shape Amazon’s reboot eventually takes.
The actor, who is best-recognized for roles in the likes of The Outlaws, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, Black Mirror, A Thousand Blows, and This City is Ours, is now just behind the likes of several firm favorites, including The Gentlemen star Theo James, former Superman Henry Cavill, Kraven the Hunter’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Slow Horses star Jack Lowden, and The Iron Claw actor Harris Dickinson (via Coral). Nelson-Joyce's odds improving came quickly following the actor stating he would be up for taking on the coveted role following the departure of Daniel Craig. There’s no doubt that Adolescence is a massive success. What started as a pitch for another “one-take” concept, following the success of Boiling Point, has quickly turned into a cultural phenomenon and international hit.
So, what is behind the new Netflix show’s meteoric rise? Is it the concept, or just a fad? Perhaps it really is just great “drama.”
I had the pleasure of talking to some of the talented creatives behind Philip Barantini’s latest hit, Adolescence, last week. I started by chatting with Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty. The buildup to the interviews can be a slightly nerve-wracking experience as you wait silently in a bustling hotel corridor in London, with teams of PR and personnel spread across many rooms, before being thrust into the lights and cameras where your interviewees are waiting. As a filmmaker, I am...

Taboo was a brilliant but underrated 2017 series by the great Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), with an incredible cast — co-creator Tom Hardy, Leo Bill, Jessie Buckley, Oona Chaplin, Mark Gatiss, Tom Hollander, Stephen Graham, and Jonathan Pryce. Knight said at the time of its release that he had plans for two more seasons, but then... nothing. News about the show trickled out of the industry pipeline over the years, with Knight saying in 2021 that six episodes were written, and producer Dean Baker confirming a second season in 2023. Now we've gotten our biggest update about Taboo yet, and it's not an April Fool's Day joke. Hardy confirmed Season 2 was being written, and while discussing his new show MobLand with MovieWeb, he told us about why it has taken so long and why he's still interested in Taboo.
"I've been busy," said Hardy as to why it's taken eight years. The excellent cast has been busy as well,...

‘Tis quite the year for gritty crime dramas and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited. Still slated to arrive soon are Gangs of London season 3 and Dexter: Resurrection, among others, but until then, we have the highly anticipated Guy Ritchie series MobLand to tide us over. One thing’s for sure: Expect it to be chalked full of the director’s signature style grit, bloody awesome action (violence), and rapid-fire dialogue.
Guy Ritchie's MobLand release schedule
MobLand is a 10-episode crime series you’ll want to stay on top of. The show premiered today, Sunday, March 30, 2025 with the first episode on Paramount+. Following the success of Adolescence, executive producers Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters opened up about the possibility of doing another season of Netflix’s newest crime drama series. In the show, Graham portrays the role of Eddie Miller, the father of a 13-year-old boy who has been accused of murdering his female classmate.
Netflix’s Adolescence was originally developed as a limited drama. However, this may possibly change due to the show’s ongoing critical and streaming success. Speaking with Variety, when asked if the streamer had already reached out to them for a potential second season, Graham and Walters confirmed that nothing is really official, but admitted that they’re indeed considering the possibility of working on another story for Adolescence Season 2. "Possibly, let’s see how the figures are," Graham said with a smirk. "But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story." However, Walters also acknowledged...

Whatever you think about Shia Labeouf, his intensity and commitment is unquestionable, and he's not afraid to be outspoken. Labeouf's interesting career path was diverted among a variety of scandals and allegations, and you could hardly call it a comeback when he returned in 2023 with the film Padre Pio. Which is a shame, because he gives a great performance, and Abel Ferrara always creates fascinating films. It was perhaps just too niche a movie to give the former Transformers star the spotlight again. That likely won't change with his next movie, Salvable, which recently released its first trailer. You can watch the trailer for the film, also starring Toby Kebbell, below:
The synopsis for Salvable reads as follows:
"Shia Labeouf and Toby Kebbell star in an emotional, action-packed film about a prize fighter’s battles both inside and outside the ring. When a battered boxer past his prime finds his...

It’s official, y’all: Stephen Graham’s hit Hulu series A Thousand Blows has been renewed for a second season, and according to the announcement, we can expect a season 2 debut sooner than we expect.
The gritty crime series is a gem of a period piece that sucked audiences right into its narrative of ambition, violence, organized crime, and desire. Created by Steven Knight, of Peaky Blinders fame, A Thousand Blows is a bloody boxing drama set in mid-1800s London that is completely flawless and purely entertaining. While it may have started as a miniseries, it was renewed before the first season even aired, and season 2 was shot back-to-back with season 1.
Inspired by the true-life stories of a group of characters battling for survival in the brutal underground of Victorian London’s East End, the series follows Jamaican immigrants Hezekiah Moscow (Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall) as...

The Netflix limited series Adolescencehas been nothing short of a sensation, earning rapturous reviews and sitting at the top of the streamer's top ten since its release. At a time when many streaming properties struggle to break through, Adolescence has managed to command attention for its visceral performances, technical virtuosity, and distressingly timely subject matter.
While everyone on the series gives it their all, it serves as an ideal showcase for the many talents of its co-creator and star, Stephen Graham. As Eddie, the father of 13-year-old suspected murderer Jamie, Graham radiates genuine love for his son along with deep anger and guilt in the wake of the allegations against him. It's a masterful performance that marks one of Graham's most visible projects to US audiences, but it's really just the latest in a long line of stellar work stretching back over three decades. Graham wrote ad co-created the series with Jack Thorne, whose previous work includes the 2022 sports drama “The Swimmers” and the 2024 biopic “Joy.”
Like the BAFTA-nominated feature “Boiling Point,” which also starred Graham, the series is filmed in a continuous one-shot style by Philip Barantini.

Plot: A crime drama filmed in an ambitious real-time, one-shot. It tells the story of how a family’s world is turned upside down when 13-year-old Jamie Miller is arrested with the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school.
Review: Being a parent is an incredibly hard job. When you add the complexity of shepherding impressionable minds in our fully integrated and constantly online culture, things that were difficult decades ago become infinitely more so today. The four-episode limited series Adolescence is a chilling portrait of what could happen to even the most caring and attentive parents. Co-created by star Stephen Graham, Adolescence is a masterpiece of acting and writing that also serves as a technical achievement, with each episode filmed as a single, long take. There are so many fantastic stories on television, but Adolescence is easily one of the best productions ever created for the small screen.

Everyone’s talking about Netflix drama Adolescence, and Erin Doherty knows why.
The four episodes of Netflix’s latest miniseries (hailed as “perfection,” a “masterclass” and “powerful TV“) are each filmed in one, consecutive shot, leaving audience members flummoxed at the stellar acting and trying to make sense of how director Philip Barantini did it.
The script from Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials) and Stephen Graham (Peaky Blinders) tells the story of Jamie (Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old boy who is accused of stabbing a girl from school to death. Viewers are taken through the grisly process from start to finish: his shocking arrest and first police interview, the detectives attempting to put the pieces of the case together, a child psychologist sent to assess Jamie and the family forced to re-evaluate every parental decision that led to this life-altering event.

It landed on Netflix on Thursday 13 March, and the world hasn’t stopped talking about it since. Adolescence, the four-part drama co-created by Stephen Graham and Help writer Jack Thorne, is a harrowing look at male rage and teenage knife crime, following 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) as he’s arrested for murder and the aftermath that ripples through his school and home. The writing is gripping, the acting is astounding – but the thing that’s had viewers around the world in awe of this show is the fact that each episode is filmed in one single, continuous take. No cuts, no CGI blending shots together – just one camera, following multiple actors around multiple sets, for a whole hour at a time.
The series comes after Graham and director Philip Barantini’s one-take movie Boiling Point, which focused on a highly-strung chef during one particularly stressful night at an upmarket restaurant.

It certainly feels like Disney+ Emea (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) scripted originals are in a good place. That’s according to the man in charge, Lee Mason, executive director of scripted originals, Emea Disney+, who sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an interview on how his team’s successes are shaping the streamer’s strategy.
“I’m feeling positive,” Mason, previously the commissioning editor for drama at Channel 4, says. “[Especially] off the back of Rivals and A Thousand Blows.”
These two shows — vastly different in terms of genre — have a lot in common, the executive argues. “My feeling has always been about not moving too far away from what Disney+ is,” Mason explains. “That’s characters you care about, worlds that intrigue you and stories that move you. That’s got to be the starting point.”

The series is a historical drama that follows the dangerous underground of Victorian London's East End in the 1880s while also exploring the rise of legitimized boxing as an actual sport—a massive change from the brutal bare-knuckled brawling that used to reign supreme.
The Direct's Russ Milheim sat down with A Thousand Blows showrunner and creator Steven Knight where he not only gave an update on Season 2, but also helped break down some key moments in Season 1.

From arthouse projects like Steven Spielberg’s Band of Brothers and Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York to commercial blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean and Venom 3, Graham has done it all and then some.

A painfully unappreciated series led by Oscar-nominee and Mad Max: Fury Road star Tom Hardy is finally finding some success thanks to free streaming. Only running for one season, the period psychological thriller Taboo has now entered the free streaming charts, and finds Hardy in the lead as the mysterious and mercilessly intense James Keziah Delaney, an adventurer who returns to 1812 London to rebuild his late father's shipping empire.
Debuting back in 2017, Taboo was created by Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight, Tom Hardy, and his father, Chips Hardy. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Leo Bill, Jessie Buckley, Oona Chaplin, Stephen Graham, Jefferson Hall, and David Hayman alongside Hardy, Taboo more than lives up to its title as it plunges audiences into the dark side of 19th-century London and the political and business corruption, violent gangs, and misery that plagued the city.

Steven Knight may not be a name everyone recognizes, but odds are you are familiar with his resume. Having written films ranging from Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises, Pawn Sacrifice, Spencer, and Maria, the writer is best known for his run of small-screen projects, including Peaky Blinders, Taboo, Rogue Heroes, Great Expectations, and The Veil. His penchant for British period dramas has resulted in some great shows, and his latest project is the Hulu series A Thousand Blows, starring Stephen Graham and Malachi Kirby.
A Thousand Blows follows Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), two best friends from Jamaica who travel to London to seek a new and better life. Misogyny is a part of the fabric of our culture, and a patriarchal society like the one we live in depends on deep-seated and widespread contempt for women to sustain its structure. Created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, Netflix’s latest limited series, “Adolescence,” is a chilling examination of murder and toxic masculinity. Though the subject matter is entirely different, this series will undoubtedly be compared to Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” which debuted to thunderous acclaim last year, and swept the Emmys as well as other awards. Gutting, raw and stunningly acted, “Adolescence” highlights how we’ve failed ourselves and will continually fail the generations coming behind us.
Helmed by director Philip Barantini, who uses his signature one-shot style throughout all four episodes, “Adolescence” opens in an unnamed Northern English town in the early morning. Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) and his partner, Detective Sargent Misha Frank (Faye Marsay...

Erin Doherty’s psychologist is assigned to assess Jamie during his detention. Here’s our Adolescence episode 3 review.
If you thought episodes 1 and 2 of Adolescence were tough to watch, brace yourself for this third chapter. Perhaps the best of the lot, episode 3 is particularly harrowing as we’re introduced to Briony, Erin Doherty’s psychologist, who’s tasked with assessing Jamie Miller as he’s being held at a facility awaiting trial. It’s been seven months since Jamie was arrested at his home, and the youngster still insists he’s innocent. Cracks are beginning to show.
Here’s the thing about Adolescence: we know Jamie did it, and we’ve known as much since the end of episode 1. During the third episode, the teen keeps slipping and accidentally implying or admitting he did in fact kill the girl, only to quickly take it back in a panic.

Creator Steven Knight has something new to share in the form of A Thousand Blows. A dramatic expose of Victorian London circa 1880, featuring BAFTA-nominated actor Stephen Graham, alongside Malachi Kirby and Erin Doherty. This time the action is not based in Birmingham with the likes of Tommy Shelby but looks further south to London and Henry ‘Sugar’ Goodson. Bare-knuckle boxer, East London legend, and a man on the cusp of cultural change. Out on Hulu and already confirmed for Season 2, A Thousand Blows looks set to cement Steven Knight’s reputation as an international dramatist.
With sets that bring a real slice of Victorian London to life, Steven Knight runs with the idea Boiling Point’s Stephen Graham brought to him. Combining other elements, including Mary Carr and the 40 Elephants, which had been on the writer’s back burner for some time, he evokes this world with his words. When...

Owen Cooper is a name many might be talking about over the next few weeks — at least among those who manage to get through Netflix’s new limited series “Adolescence” in one piece.
The emotionally-devastating 4-part drama — from director Philip Barantini and written by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham — tells the gut-wrenching story of a British family whose world is turned upside down when their outwardly normal and well-adjusted 13-year-old son Jamie is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl in his class. Weeks before its launch date of March 13 it was being described in the U.K. press as one of the “most terrifying TV shows of our times” for its exploration of bullying, toxic masculinity and how a young mind from a seemingly loving home can be quietly radicalised by incel culture and the manosphere.

Steven Knight has suggested that the upcoming Peaky Blinders film could see a theatrical release before arriving on Netflix. The highly anticipated continuation of the hit series recently wrapped filming and features a cast that includes Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, Cillian Murphy, and Stephen Graham.
In an interview with Playlist, Knight confirmed that production concluded on December 13 and expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “We’ve got Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, and obviously Cillian Murphy and Stephen Graham. And I have to say, it is mind-blowingly good.”

Alfred Hitchcock's psychological thriller of 1958, Vertigo, is considered one of the greatest films in cinema history. The movie starring James Stewart and Kim Novak is often hailed as the director's unparalleled masterpiece, despite the mixed reception it had when it was released. As decades passed, it received a complete reevaluation until achieving the status it still holds today. Remaking it seems as pointless as remaking The Godfather, but it does seem to be happening - and even the movie's writer is aware of how ridiculous it is.
Steven Knight, the screenwriter behind films like the thriller Dirty Pretty Things, the biopic Spencer and the 2024 Angelina Jolie film Maria, jokingly agrees that he is "an idiot" for attempting the impossible in taking on remaking the classic thriller. However, it hasn't stopped him from thinking about remaking Hitchcock's Technicolor classic. "It's swirling around in my head as we speak," he...

Knight saw his original TV series become an international hit over six seasons between 2013 and 2022, and told Playlist that filming had completed on the cinematic version:

Peaky Blinders, the show which ran for six seasons on BBC in the UK and is streaming on Netflix in the US, will soon be coming back to screens. With the movie announced in December 2023 as a follow-up to the series, titled The Immortal Man, fans have been clamoring for details for the return of their favorite Brummie-based criminals to the screen.
After months of production updates and casting announcements of returning and new characters, series creator Steven Knight has given fans some major updates on the progress of the film. Firstly, that it will have a full theatrical release and, secondly, according to Knight, the first edit is "mind blowingly good." Knight seems pretty sure of this too, as he told The Playlist while speaking about his show A Thousand Blows.
"It was never promoted massively, but people just found it and told each other about it," he said of the show.

Prolific writer/producer/director Steven Knight habitually turns historical grit into must-watch television. From the streets of 1920s Birmingham in “Peaky Blinders” to the daring real-life Sas soldiers of “Rogue Heroes,” Knight’s work thrives on characters who push against the limits of their status. His latest series, “A Thousand Blows,” is no different. Set in post-industrial revolution London, the show follows best friends Hezekiah and Alec as they get swept into the city’s brutal underground boxing scene while crossing paths with local legends and the notorious all-female gang, The Forty Elephants.

The ultimate sign of television’s arrival as a cinematic art form may be the medium’s growing obsession with the oner — the uninterrupted single-shot technique that was long part of the visual language of big-screen auteurs.
A six-minute tracking shot was, along with the presence of Matthew McConaughey, the prestige calling card for the first season of True Detective. Shows as differently received as The Bear and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story have generated their peak buzz from whole episodes presented in a continuous take. Jeon Woo-Sung’s wild Korean thriller Bargain raised the bar even further by telling its story in six episodes, each shot to at least resemble a oner.
In the second episode of Apple’s upcoming Hollywood satire The Studio, appropriately titled “The Oner,” Seth Rogen’s studio exec says of one particularly technically ambitious shot, “The oner is the ultimate cinematic achievement.

Everyone's favorite street gang from Peaky Blinders is getting the respect it deserves, at last. A remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is in the works, with writer Steven Knight taking on the challenging task of adapting the iconic 1958 psychological thriller. Many film lovers regard the original as one of the greatest movies ever made, and it’s often seen as untouchable, leaving little room for a successful remake.
However, Knight, best known for creating Peaky Blinders, is diving in with the goal of bringing it to a new generation.
Knight admitted that adapting Vertigo is no easy feat. In an interview promoting his latest series A Thousand Blows, he referred to himself as ‘an idiot’ for trying to take on the project.

There’s a moment halfway through Season 1 of Steven Knight’s East End caper “A Thousand Blows” where criminal mastermind Mary Carr (Erin Doherty) takes rising boxer Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) for a posh night out; she does this ostensibly to introduce him to a promoter (Ziggy Heath) who can get Hez into more society-friendly exhibitions — colorful belts and boxing gloves are just now replacing bare-knuckle brawls at the start of this Hulu series — in exchange for his help in pulling off a heist. Also to flirt a bit.
What convinces the Jamaican transplant, though, is seeing a performer (Jessica Reeve) do a trapeze act and cast the whole room under her spell. Dressed all in silver like a cross between a heron and a Greek goddess, she has power over everyone else at that moment, and her skin color isn’t something the English are looking down on but looking up at.

If you were ever wondering what a blank check earned off the success of a show as popular as "Peaky Blinders" can buy you, the answer is a new streaming series as thrilling and well-crafted as "A Thousand Blows." Creator Steven Knight, the prodigious screenwriter behind movies such as "Locke," "Spencer," and the recent biopic "Maria," could've gone in any number of directions after crafting the Cillian Murphy-starring story about a gang of criminals making their way up from the slums of Birmingham to the very seat of power in early 1900s England. The fact that he chose to stay in roughly the same lane, this time set in 1880s London and following a gang of female thieves crossing paths with a pair of aspiring boxers from Jamaica, is precisely what makes this next effort so intriguing to watch. Write what you know, the old adage goes, and Knight...

Netflix’s Adolescence is a crime thriller of extraordinary power and rare insight, transforming into something completely unexpected by the final moments of its heartbreaking finale. The scene, anchored by a towering performance of vulnerability from the great Stephen Graham, hits with the force of a wrecking ball, leaving you shattered.
Yet, somehow, the sequence manages to piece the viewer back together. Graham, simply put, is a revelation. He is outstanding in this year’s Hulu series A Thousand Blows, embodying a powder keg of intensity — wavering between rage and tenderness — yet deeply wounded and achingly human.
I’m confident you won’t see a better performance all year.

I’m confident you won’t see a better performance all year.

Co-created and written by Graham and This Is England series writer Jack Thorne, Adolescence sees Graham reteam with Boiling Point director Philip Barantini and A Thousand Blows co-star Erin Doherty to tell a one-shot, real-time story about a family whose lives come undone when their teenage son is arrested on suspicion of murdering a girl at his school. Check out the nail-biting trailer below;
