• C. Morgan Grefe : When I was in graduate school, I was doing an internship at Slatersville Historic Site. While I was there, I was also taking classes and working with scholars at Brown - one of whom is a leading scholar of W. E. B. Dubois. So I'm looking at Dubois' documents and I'm working at Slater Mill and I start seeing names in common coming up in both of these places. And I became very intrigued with what it was that actually assisted Dubois, who is the grandfather of the civil rights movement, is one of the founders of the NAACP. And this name 'Slater' kept popping up. And I'm thinking 'this can't be a Rhode Island Slater'.
