One of Hollywood’s busiest rising stars just added another big role to his future dance card. Glen Powell is set to star in Paramount’s The Running Man reboot for Paramount Pictures. Edgar Wright will direct and produce with his producing partner Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.
Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King that the author first published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, Running Man was made famous by the 1987 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. King’s futuristic novel is a chase thriller set in a dystopian America in the year 2025. The story centers on Ben Richards, a desperate man who participates in violent reality show called The Running Man in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter. The show follows Richards being chased by numerous hunters sent to kill him. George Linder to exec produce.

Glen Powell has already played a hit man, so why not star as a running man?
The “Hit Man” actor/writer and “Anyone But You” star has officially been cast in Edgar Wright’s “Running Man” remake, as announced at CinemaCon 2024. The feature will be released by Paramount.
Writer/director Wright previously announced that he was adapting Stephen King’s 1982 novel “The Running Man” (published under pseudonym Richard Bachman) for another big screen iteration in 2021. Deadline reported at the time that Wright will be teaming with his “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” screenwriter Michael Bacall to be as faithful to the source material as possible. The project was hinted at since 2017 with Wright tweeting that it’s the one film he would want to remake.

Well, Mr. King, here’s your answer: the newest version of horror maestro Stephen King’s novel “Salem’s Lot” is coming out this year. Sometime. On streaming.
After initially being expected to hit theaters, New Line’s film adaptation of King’s 1975 bestselling novel “Salem’s Lot” will debut on Max in 2024, the streamer announced today. As for when in 2024, we still don’t know, and as for what this thing will even look like, still no answer there, as today’s announcement came without any sort of handy-dandy still to round out the news.
The film was first announced in 2019 and was shot way back in 2021. Last month, King himself took to Twitter (X?) to publicly wonder where the heck the film was. “Between you and me, Twitter, I’ve seen the new ‘Salem’s Lot’ and it’s quite good,” King wrote on social media. “Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build,...

Stephen King is urging Warner Bros. Discovery for an update on its long-awaited “Salem’s Lot” adaptation.
Legendary horror author King took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to question why the feature adaptation of his book “Salem’s Lot,” which was first announced in 2019 and shot way back in 2021, has yet to be released by Warner Bros.
“Between you and me, Twitter, I’ve seen the new ‘Salem’s Lot’ and it’s quite good,” King wrote on social media. “Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything. Who knows. I just write the fucking things.”

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Richard Bachman's 1982 novel "The Running Man" is set in the far-off future of 2025 when corporate America is ruling the country, people are having trouble finding work, and appearing on salacious government-run game shows seems like a viable way to make money.
Contestants in "The Running Man" are deemed to be enemies of the state and are sentenced to execution. They are then set loose and hunted by government assassins, each one outfitted with a colorful gimmick. The contestants earn $100 for every hour they stay alive, with a $100 bonus for each cop they kill. If they live for 30 days, they win a billion dollars. The public takes bets on how long the contestants will survive before their inevitable slaughter.
The 1987 feature film adaptation of "The Running Man," directed by Paul Michael Glaser and written by Steven E. de Souza, changed the premise slightly. Now set in 2017, the film sees Ben Richards...

Rockstar Games are no strangers to controversy, with the developers having become the subject of infamous scandals ranging from Grand Theft Auto’s Hot Coffee mod to the banning of Bully in several countries. However, despite decades of shocking conservative parents by taking gaming to the next level, I think no one would disagree that the project which best represents the company’s dedication to the extreme is 2003’s video game Manhunt, a gritty snuff simulator that takes stealth games into a decidedly terrifying direction.
Borrowing from horrific urban legends and schlocky exploitation flicks in equal measure, the title became a disturbing cult hit that’s still cited today as one of the most gruesome games ever made. And two decades after its release, I think that it’s time to look back on the origins of this strange little experiment in order to find out why there’s never...

One of the only good things to come out of Hollywood's obsession with grinding a good thing into the ground via unrelenting sequels are some of the titles. Whether characters are getting "back in the habit" or "dying harder," there's nothing better than a bonkers sequel subtitle. And while a subtitle isn't necessarily indicative of a film being good or bad, Hollywood has certainly churned out its share of sequels that truly didn't need to happen. Does anyone remember "Son Of The Mask" or "Jaws: The Revenge?" Hell, 20th Century Fox even greenlit "Elektra," a sequel to 2003's universally panned "Daredevil," just because the first movie made an okay profit despite being arguably one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
Over the years, and especially, in our nostalgia-obsessed present moment, we've been treated to all-manner of legacy sequel — some good, some terrible — as Hollywood increasingly turns to existing IPs...

Note: This article is an offshoot of Variety Intelligence Platform’s special report “The New Face of Content Piracy,” available exclusively to VIP+ subscribers.
It’s easy to assume that what’s driving illegal consumption of film and TV is as simple as viewers wanting to watch popular titles without paying for them. Indeed, that was essentially the case for film in 2022, with the year’s highest-grossing titles largely overlapping with the most pirated films, according to exclusive data piracy-focused research firm Muso shared with Variety Intelligence Platform.
Films’ ease of accessibility on streaming also played a notable, albeit smaller, role. The most pirated film of 2022, Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” has only been available to stream in the U.S. thus far via Starz, whose domestic subscriber base is a fraction of the size of platforms like Disney+ and Netflix. Piracy of the film therefore remained elevated throughout the year.

The cinematic canvas is a broad one indeed. On the silver screen worlds and universes are created to enthrall and delight in equal measure. One of the many staples when world building a future on screen are the small details which go to make up a fully-realised world. As well as futuristic costumes, set designs, and even languages, games are often an integral part of what goes to making a coherent and believable verisimilitude.
Some of these games, like Harry Potter’s Quidditch, play an important part in the development of the characters. Others are more central to the film. Whether your preferred games live online, are played in front of a crowd of thousands, or are held in UK casinos, cinema audiences around the world can’t get enough of the thrill of the game.

Alex Ross Perry (“Her Smell”) will write and direct the adaptation of Stephen King’s best-seller “The Dark Half” for MGM, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The story had been previously turned into a 1993 MGM film, which starred Timothy Hutton. It followed an author whose crime thrillers under a pseudonym sold better than the books written with his real name. Once his pseudonym is exposed, he decides to give his other ego a burial, but things start turning sinister as the alter ego has taken on a life of its own.
King wrote the book based on his own experiences when it was revealed he was writing thriller novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Those novels included “Thinner,” “Running Man,” “Rage” and “The Long Walk.”

There’s always an inherent danger in naming a movie “final” or “last.”
Take Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, for instance. While Paul W. S. Anderson very much closed the book on Alice’s story, there have already been rumblings of a potential TV revival. And therein lies the risk to undermine the supposed finale that came before.
The same is true of Rambo V: Last Blood, after lead star and all-around franchise veteran Sylvester Stallone hinted at the possibility of a sixth movie, providing those all-important box office numbers are up to snuff. While appearing at Cannes Film Festival, Stallone recalled his experience on Rocky, during which time he believed the famous underdog story would conclude after round three. And we all know how that turned out.
Could the same be true of Rambo?

Randy Houser remembers exactly where he was when he decided to throw it all away. Following a string of populist country radio hits, he became fed up with how he was expected to perform them live: shored up with various computerized bells and whistles that were meant to help him compete with his peers and their outsized live shows.
“We were playing along to all these tracks,” Houser says. “I walked out there one day and felt like I was a freaking puppet. I called my manager and said, ‘Take all these damn machines back.

Join our newsletter to get more stories like this Last year from February to April, the Joongang Tongyang Broadcasting Company (Jtbc) aired one of the funniest K-dramas to ever grace the Korean small screen, Welcome to Waikiki. Also known as Laughter in Waikiki and Go-Go Waikiki, the K-drama stood out for utilizing slapstick, a form of comedy usually seen only in certain Korean variety shows like Running Man. Needless to say, the concept was very popular thus resulting in Jtbc airing a second season. In a couple of months, the second season of Welcome to Waikiki will air. The only […]

Welcome to the future. It's now 2019 - the year that Blade Runner, Running Man, and Akira all take place. FirstShowing.net has been in operation for 13 years now, and we're still going strong. But things are a bit different since we first started as a little movie blog back in 2006. I wanted to write a brief post with some updates about the site, the server, and info on our regular coverage. As you've probably noticed, we are no longer writing about movie news or rumors or casting - mostly just trailers, short films, reviews, film festival coverage, and other important updates from the world of cinema. This is easier for us nowadays and allows us to focus on bringing even more attention to the movies we love and discover throughout the year. We also regularly update the Release Schedule and still keep active on Twitter and Facebook. More details below.

I was probably one of about seven people that wasn’t enamoured with Wolf Cop. There’s a lot of love for it, but I just didn’t have the same blast with it that everyone else seemed to. That’s not to say it’s a bad film, I was mid festival, severely sleep deprived and in need of a good rest. So, when offered Lowell Dean’s latest piece, SuperGrid, I was eager to see if this was a one off. Seems that yes, it was.

Randy Houser has announced plans to release his new album Magnolia this fall, and with the news comes another song from the singer-songwriter, the thoughtful ballad “No Stone Unturned.”
The 12-track album, which was produced by Keith Gattis and recorded at his studio in East Nashville, derives its title from the nickname of Houser’s home state, Mississippi. Houser, who began his career penning hits like Trace Adkins’ “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” co-wrote all the songs on Magnolia, with “No Stone Unturned” following “What Whiskey Does” as the second release from the album.

The “World of Dance” battle between hip-hop groups Funkywunks and Connection was the closest match-up in the third week of The Duels, so close that it came down to a fraction of a point. Funkywunks ended up eliminated from the competition, and it might have all come down to that darned double kong.
Derek Hough pointed out that high-flying maneuver that didn’t quite land. But the group played it off so well that Jennifer Lopez and Ne-Yo didn’t even comment on it, if they noticed it at all. But even if it was only Hough’s keen eye that spotted it, it might have been enough to cost them a spot in the next round. Did you agree with Hough’s critique? Arguably the last tentpole huzzah of the summer before New Line/Warner Bros.’ Conjuring series title The Nun takes us into the fall on Sept. 7 is Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, the sixth in the series, which is eyeing a global start this weekend of $135M-plus.
Broken down that’s around $55M-$60M stateside and between $75M-80M overseas in 36 markets including South Korea, UK, Russia, Spain, Latin America and some key emerging South East Asian territories. Should Fallout truly overindex around the globe–and note it has the best reviews of the franchise with a 97% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes–it would then be at $150M. Anything over 2011’s Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol’s $131.5M opening reps a worldwide record start for the Tom Cruise franchise.

Before its “x-treme early access” arrival on Steam, Boss Key Productions’ battle royale reboot wasn’t the “Running Man”-inspired, spandex-wearing, neon-mulletted, free-to-play creation of the ’80s it is today.
“Radical Heights” was far less radical, involving a lot of “trust mechanics” and gameplay centered on inmates and guards in a prison.
“Originally, what was proposed to us was a battle royale game, but maybe in a prison and with a lot of trust mechanics,” Boss Key creative director Zach Lowery told Variety. “We talked through what that would mean and it become a really hard mechanic to build around.”
The dilemma, Lowery said, was that trying to build around a mechanic that had one player raise his hands to not be shot and then relying on the other player to not shoot them, just wasn’t going to work. Just one fatal break of that trust and the game would be ruined.

Less than a week after mothballing its premiere game, “Lawbreakers,” studio Boss Key Productions announced Monday that it plans to launch its second title: a free-to-play battle royale game.
“Radical Heights,” which goes live as an early-access title on Steam, is described as a last-person-standing shooter with an ’80s aesthetic and a game-show twist.
“This is a five-month passion project for the studio as we’re creating and publishing the game entirely by ourselves,” Zach Lowery, “Radical Heights” creative director, said in a statement. “We’re huge fans of Battle Royale games along with the bright, inviting irreverence of the ’80s aesthetic. Because of that, we want to put our own spin on the genre and create a futuristic ’80s world that takes place in 2023 during an over-the-top game show where contestants battle it out for fame and prizes.”

With filming set to begin at the end of this month, Legendary Pictures has announced the cast for the upcoming film, The Great Wall, which will be one of the largest films ever shot entirely within in China. Come inside to learn more.
I'd love to tell you more about The Great Wall, but right now we just don't have the information on what it will be about. The only description we have so far is this: "Zhang Yimou is directing the story of an elite force making a last stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure." That's a pretty basic plot description, but we Do know who will be starring in the film, thanks to a press release that dropped early this morning. Check it out:

2Nd Update, Tuesday 4 Am Pt: Actuals are in for the international weekend with no major discrepancies save for a big drop on Taken 3. La-headquartered China Lion Film Distribution has picked up Chinese titles Running Man and Somewhere Only We Know for release in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Both will go day-and-date with their Mainland debuts later this month and in mid-February, the latter taking advantage of the early Chinese New Year corridor. (See teasers below.)
Each of the films has a strong hook for Chinese, and Korean, audiences. Running Man mixes talent from both countries and is adapted from a popular reality TV series which itself was based on an original Korean format. Somewhere Only We Know taps the trend of romance and nostalgia, and stars Kris Wu, a former member of Korean/Chinese boy band Exo.
Running Man, which China Lion picked up from Wanda Media Group, is a feature spinoff of the popular reality TV show that revolves around celebrity teams who compete against one another for an ultimate prize.
