Filmmaker Tim Burton is known for his gothic aesthetics and choosing to tell stories of weird characters. The filmmaker has put his stamp on blockbusters such as Batman as well as more personal stories such as Big Fish. He will be returning to one of his most beloved franchises with the Michael Keaton starrer Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
One movie in his filmography that stands out from the rest is his 2001 revival of Planet of the Apes. The project served as a remake of the 1968 classic sci-fi film, and starred Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter, and more. The film was not received well upon release and is often considered to be a subpar remake of the original. Actor Paul Giamatti, who played Limbo, spoke about his experience while shooting the film.

Despite having directed some excellent films, as in the case of “Dog Bite Dog” and “Love Battlefield” and a masterpiece in “Limbo”, Soi Cheang's filmography is actually filled with titles of questionable quality, to say the least. “Shamo” which is based on the homonymous manga written by Izo Hashimoto and illustrated by Akio Tanaka definitely lies in the second category.

Desert Fury: Sen Gets Bleak in the Heat of a Cold Case Mystery
Despite it being the title of innumerable films from around the world, Limbo happens to feel like the most felicitous description for Indigenous Australian filmmaker Ivan Sen’s seventh film, a denuded black and white genre brood-fest which conjures an actual sense of oblivion on the border between heaven and hell.
Strangely, it plays like the inverse, in many ways, of his most well-traveled title, 2013’s Mystery Road, where an Indigenous detective is trying to solve a young girl’s murder in the Australian outback. He returns to the same zone of interest with a similar narrative thrust, except this time the detective is a grizzled, white man idly trying to dig up clues about a twenty year old case of a missing Aboriginal girl whilst nursing his heroin addiction.…...

In writer-director Ivan Sen’s incisive anti-detective film Limbo, Travis Hurley’s (Simon Baker) job isn’t to solve the murder of an Aboriginal girl. It’s to determine whether or not to reopen the cold case in the Australian outback mining town of Limbo—or, rather, to determine whether some other detective should even attempt to crack it.
Travis’s investigation certainly doesn’t get off to an auspicious start. After checking into a motel and shooting up, he tracks down the victim’s brother, Charlie (Rob Collins) and sister, Emma (Natasha Wanganeen). Having little reason to trust a “whitefella” cop, both refuse to speak with him. Travis is ready to pack it in when a computerized component is boosted from his car. He finds himself stuck in Limbo while he waits for the replacement part to ship.

Despite being significantly hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, U.K. film studios and production facilities are looking to pick back up where they left off after a record-breaking year for film and high-end television production spend in 2022.
When asked what the industry can expect in terms of business in the year ahead, Samantha Perahia, head of production U.K. at the British Film Commission, says she feels positive that demand “is going to be ramping up.”
She continues, “We already know that some of our studio facilities in the U.K. are getting very busy. While not every facility in the U.K. is jampacked again, there seems to be some momentum now, which is very welcome.”
The production spend in the U.K. jumped from £726 million ($376 million) in 2016 to $7.8 billion in 2022. At the same time, the U.K. considerably expanded its studio and stage provision to...

While most audiences are likely familiar with the television work of Simon Baker from The Mentalist, the Australian actor recently went back to his roots for one of his most acclaimed performances yet. Ivan Sen’s Outback noir Limbo, which premiered at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, and also stopped by Karlovy Vary, TIFF, and more, follows the actor as a jaded detective who heads to a remote Australian town to investigate the cold case murder of a local indigenous girl 20 years earlier. Now set for a theatrical release from Music Box Films and Brainstorm Media beginning on March 22 at Film Forum in New York City and in Los Angeles, we’re pleased to exclusively debut the new trailer.

When you talk about John Sayles, do you talk about America? Watching and examining his beautiful tapestry of films, this reveals itself an easy question to ask and an easy question to answer. There may be no single filmmaker who has better captured the agony and ecstasy of the American experiment than Sayles. Yet his pictures never feel like homework. They’re funny, heartbreaking, and full of characters that are well-rounded and sharply drawn.
The Film Stage got the opportunity to speak with Sayles about his 1996 masterpiece Lone Star (now available on 4K and Blu-ray courtesy of the Criterion Collection), as well lesser-seen gems like Limbo, Go for Sisters, and Amigo.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we’re honored to chat with iconic director John Sayles, whose essential crime epic Lone Star is now available from The Criterion Collection in both 4K Uhd + Blu-ray.
Our B-Sides today include Limbo, Amigo, and Go For Sisters. We also discuss Sayles’ parallel careers as a screenwriter and a novelist. He talks about the work he did on the Toshirô Mifune/Scott Glenn actioner The Challenge (director John Frankenheimer asking him to write new draft over a weekend before an impending strike); he discusses what he learned working for Roger Corman early in his career; which genre he’s still itching to direct; his love of the recent Godzilla Minus One; and the slew of scripts that never got made.

Festival Merger
The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and The India Center Foundation, two non-profit organizations working with South Asian film in the U.S., have agreed to merge. Already long-time collaborators, Iffla and Icf will, among other things, work closely to incubate and launch an industry development program to showcase the next generation of South Asian talent to studios, funders and media executives.
“We saw an opportunity to scale our work nationally as one of the leading supporters of emerging creative talent in the diaspora. By joining forces with Iffla we can bring much needed resources to support the stories that need to be told in the media. Our stories,” said Priya Giri Desai, a co-founder of Icf.
“[Icf] have been a financial and creative partner to Iffla over numerous festivals already, which makes this a natural fit. I have no doubt that we can bring even greater impact together.

One can't say much to defend the clunky script or the bad casting decisions for Tim Burton's 2001 film adaptation of Pierre Boulle's "Planet of the Apes." Not only did Burton's film alter the story of the original novel into something far less poignant, but Mark Wahlberg didn't project the "square-jawed space hero" archetype that his character was clearly written as. Estella Warren and Kris Kristofferson also didn't fare well as put-upon wilderness dwellers, coming across as dainty weekend warriors who had never been camping before.
Where Burton's film excels, however, is the ape design. The makeup effects by Rick Baker are some of the best in cinema history, looking eerily natural on the faces of previously recognizable actors. Additionally, the ape cast went through extensive movement training and their chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan body movements are impressive and convincing.
The ape cast also did its job with aplomb.

Following the masterful “Limbo”, all fans of (classic) Hong Kong cinema were eagerly awaiting Soi Cheang's next step, with the director opting for an even more classic Hk approach, that will remind many of the Wa Ka-fai, Johnnie To classic, “Mad Detective” with the latter actually being the producer of “Mad Fate”.
Mad Fate is screening at San Diego Asian Film Festival
Although the movie begins in a supernatural, but also slightly comical fashion, having occultist Feng Shui Master temporarily bury a woman underground in a cemetery in order to change her fate, it soon turns into crime thriller territory. During the same night, the Master ends up by chance in an apartment that functions as a brothel, where eventually a heinous crime is committed by The Murderer, a serial killer who has a tendency to be triggered by rain storms into killing sex workers. The fest, which is forging ahead despite the Israel-Hamas conflict that has caused cancellations of several other fests in the region, as well as the earthquake that hit the country in September, has also recruited an impressive lineup of international talents to hold onstage conversations, including Tilda Swinton, Viggo Mortensen and Willem Dafoe.
Mikkelsen, who in tandem with his Hollywood career has recently returned to making films in his native Denmark such as Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round” and Nikolaj Arcel’s “The Promised Land,” which is Denmark’s current Oscar hopeful, said in a statement that he is “proud, honoured and so fortunate, that in a short while I will meet friends and colleagues and some of...

Production expenditure on scripted screen production in Australia in 2022/23 was the second highest on record at $1.49Bn (A$2.34Bn) across 213 titles, according to Screen Australia’s annual drama report, but spend on Australian theatrical features declined by 54% from last year.
Spend on scripted screen production was down 4% on last year’s record expenditure but was still significantly above the five-year average, the report found. Australian titles made up $718M (A$1.13Bn) of that expenditure with decreases in spending by Australian subscription TV and SVOD services.
However Free-to-Air (Fta) TV and Broadcaster Video-On-Demand (Bvod) providers helped offset those declines with spend on titles such as Total Control Series 3, Rfds Series 2 and While The Men Are Away.
Meanwhile, Australian theatrical features saw total expenditure of $231M (A$363M) in 2022/23, down 54% compared to the previous year and 17% below the five-year average. Australian features produced during this period include Warwick Thornton’s The New Boy,...

Earlier this year, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” scored four bids at the British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor (Daryl McCormack) and Best Actress (Emma Thompson). Before that, in 2022, Adeel Akhtar snuck into the Best Actor lineup for “Ali & Ava” and Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for “After Love.”

Just when you thought that the style of Hk action movies is long since gone, here comes “Limbo” to prove the exact opposite, in a rather impressive title that seems to combine “Seven”, Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta” and Johnnie To’s action aesthetics in the most artful way possible.

As someone with an insect phobia, exploring the world—or more accurately, worlds—of Cocoon began as one of the most subtly unsettling experiences I’ve seen out of games in some time. It’s a place equal parts reminiscent of the Shimmer from Alex Garland’s adaptation of Annihilation and the organic lifeforms that sprout in any number of Björk music videos. Throughout, you’re harnessing the building blocks that make up the natural world, though here they’ve been warped into something vaguely familiar yet demonstrably alien. This is the world within worlds that Cocoon’s player character, a cicada-like creature, is birthed into.
Over the course of Cocoon’s short play time, you wander those worlds solving puzzles, pushing forward as you unravel the mysteries that are laced into the landscapes. In the process you find out just how quickly one can adapt to any environment. That...

The pull quotes filling the open sky here say as much about the film as they do about Australian Carnival Studio's design ethos for the film's key art. Ivan Sen's striking, monochrome new cold case, outback noir Limbo is a firmly coiled spring. One that is held perfectly in, well, limbo, via the landscape, the architecture, the characters and their situations being placed intentionally in every frame. Fitting for a film about crime, and race, and truth, Limbo is a film where nothing is black and white, and yet everything is black and white. Mountains, or rather piles of dirt, dot the landscape from the many open-pit opal mines, exposed for all to see. The resulting (or perhaps remaining) holes, and deep shafts, go the...

Although those early seasons of "Futurama" were probably its strongest overall, one of the show's flaws was the way that minor characters didn't receive enough focus. The first two seasons were very much the Fry, Bender, and Leela show; Professor Farnsworth got plenty of attention too, but the other members of the crew were frequently kept on the sidelines. Amy was mostly there to obliviously make comments that Leela finds insulting, Kif was there to be target of Zapp's abuse, and Hermes was just the casually cold bureaucrat who was great at the limbo.
All of these characters were fleshed out a lot over the series; it wasn't necessarily because the show shifted its focus more towards them, but because after 140 episodes or so, those bits of time we got with them started to add up. It also helps that each season tends to give these minor characters one or two spotlight episodes,...
