Beginning with this episode, Kevin Michael Richardson takes over voicing Barbados Slim from John DiMaggio, and Feodor Chin (also the voice of Leo Wong), takes over the role of Scoop Chang, a role that was initially voiced by David Herman but then taken over by Maurice LaMarche.
When Hermes and Bone Bot approach the forcefield levee a merman dressed in southern attire, with matching accent, and a mermaid swim up to the edge. The merman says "Y'all see a dugong from Macon, run him down! He absconded with my daughter's dowry". This is referring to the season two episode The Deep South (2000) where the ship sinks and the crew discovers the long lost city of Atlanta (Georgia), which sank into the ocean centuries ago, the city's inhabitants mutated into mer-people due to leaking caffeine from the Coca-Cola plant. The merman is called The Colonel and the mermaid is his daughter, Umbriel; Fry and Umbriel fall in love, but the Colonel doesn't want his daughter dating a surface dweller, he tells her instead to date a nice dugong (a type of manatee thought to be the origin of the legends about mermaids) he knows in Macon. Fry decides to stay and live with Umbriel in Atlanta, their first night together he gets really excited when she takes her shell bra off, but his excitement quickly dies when he realizes Umbriel is only a human woman from the waist up, she has breasts but no genitals; he dumps her and quickly runs back to the ship when he realizes its impossible to have sexual intercourse with her.
The episode title is a reference to rock band Rage Against the Machine.
