- Twelve Hours Ago
The trailer court, Gambler arrives at his camper and goes inside. He unpacks and looks at his photo of Becky, and puts it on the sofa. Gambler settles in while outside, a car approaches the camper and Larry watches the Gambler's camper. Meanwhile, Gambler opens his laptop and searches for Becky. Outside, Larry says that it's payback time but can't bring himself to pick up his baseball bat. Inside, Gambler takes out his derringer. He hears Larry drive away and goes outside, but doesn't see the car. Someone watches him from the nearby brush.
Gambler goes back inside and drops his derringer in the wastebasket, and then someone comes in. He turns to see who it is, and Richard comes in and glares at him.
At Pat's garage, the JSA tell Pat and Sylvester that someone murdered Gambler. Rick and Yolanda don't see a reason to be concerned, and figure that Cindy did it since she was on the scene holding the derringer. Courtney believes that Cindy is innocent because she said she came there to see if Gambler had any connection to the robbery earlier. She picked up the derringer and it accidentally went off, and Stargirl find the letter Gambler addressed to Becky.
Beth reports that her goggles confirmed that Gambler wasn't shot. When Sylvester says that whoever destroyed the camper had to be as strong as Grundy, Rick says that Grundy is dead. Yolanda points out that if Courtney truly thought Cindy was innocent, she would have invited her to the meeting. Courtney points out that Gambler's laptop is missing, and figures if they find the laptop, they find the killer. Sylvester suggests that one of the ISA killed Gambler, but Courtney says that they can't assume it. Despite that, Sylvester points out that Gambler wasn't killed until he came back, and all of the villains are suspects including Cindy.
Later in her room, Courtney reads the letter to Becky and how Gambler apologized for why he wasn't there for her. Meanwhile, Cindy goes to her father's workshop and operates on herself with Dragon King's chemicals and equipment. She hesitantly drinks one of the chemicals.
The next day, Rick goes to Grundy's grave and confirms that he's still dead.
At the Whitmore house, Pat goes to Courtney's room and finds her sitting pensively in the window. She tells her stepfather that she read Gambler's letter a dozen times, and tells Pat that she really thinks Gambler was trying to be better. Courtney talks about how she wishes her dad had said half the things to her that Gambler said to Becky, and tells her stepfather that after they find the killer, she's going to find Becky and give her the letter. Pat says that it's a great idea, and that he and Sylvester are going to interrogate the ISA while Courtney is at school.
Jakeem and Mike prepare to deliver the papers and talk about Gambler's death. Mike figures that if they catch the killer, everyone will take them seriously. Thunderbolt chips in with his opinion about TV detectives.
Barbara goes to her office, and her fellow employers tell her that Sharpe was found dead, due to a "freak tornado". They figure that Sharpe deserved it. One of the employees, Tim, points out that Barbara is late and he's not her boss... yet. He says that he's going to vote against her proposal at the next meeting. Barbara goes into her office and finds Paula there. Paula says that she and her husband didn't kill Gambler, and they wouldn't risk going back to prison just to kill him. She then asks if Courtney mentioned Artemis, and she does everything they can to fit in. Paula is disgusted with her efforts, and doesn't understand why she should bother. She says that she does care and smiles, and then asks if she knows how to bake. Barbara says that she doesn't.
At school, Courtney talks to the other JSA members. She says that Gambler was killed by blunt force trauma, and Rick says that he checked and made sure Grundy is still dead. Beth points out that that Gambler was also stabbed through the heart, and Cindy comes over and complains they had a meeting without her. She realizes they're having another meeting, and Yolanda points out that Gambler could have been stabbed with a shiv. Courtney starts to apologize, and Cindy says that the circumstances are purely circumstantial. Beth and Courtney both figure that if they find the laptop, they find the killer, and then Courtney insists that they can move on. She looks hopefully at Cindy, who sits down with them and says that it sounds great.
Later at the diner, Maria nervously brings a cup of tea to Richard. He tries it and says that it's a fine cup. And he's delighted that she got it right after 44 attempts. She leaves as Pat and Sylvester confront Richard and say that they need to talk to him about Gambler. They ask where he was, and Richard says that he saw Gambler at the diner. Later he thought better of it and went to apologize. Sylvester doesn't believe it and thinks Richard told Gambler said he was going to kill him. Richard says that if he was going to kill Gambler, or them, he'd say something more eloquent and threatens Sylvester. Sylvester starts to lunge at Richard, and Pat holds him back. The two men leave, and Richard asks Maria for refill.
Outside, Sylvester snaps at Pat that Pat is the sidekick and Sylvester takes the lead. Pat tells him that it's not going to work because he knows the town. Sylvester insists that Richard is the killer, but then apologizes and says that Pat always steers him in the right direction, and goes to cool off.
Courtney is in the math classroom working on algebra, and sees Sylvester outside in the hallway. He gestures for her to come out, and she excuses himself. Sylvester tells her that it's time for her to level up, and he's going to help Courtney.
Cameron is in art class painting, and not particularly inspires. He finally starts but then starts gasping. He knocks his painting off the easel, and Deisinger comes over and asks Cameron if he's okay. Cameron says that he needs to take a break and walks out.
At the water tower, Sylvester tells Courtney that he wants her to be ready, and they both need some fun. He tells her to show him what she can already do, and she starts flipping and flying. When she lands, Sylvester applauds and she tosses him the staff. He demonstrates what he can do with it, impressing Courtney, and he smiles as his eyes and the staff glows. He focuses his emotions into the Staff body and soars into the sky.
At the Whitmore house, Barbara and Paula are trying to cook and not having much luck. Pat comes in and asks if Courtney is there, and Barbara wonders if their daughter is at school.
Sylvester lands and says that his maneuver was the "Shooting Star", and suggests that she try it. Courtney tries it but the blast knocks her back. He tells her to make about her, and give herself credit for the hope and love she has for everyone, and the faith she has in her friends. Courtney tries again and succeeds, doing the same thing that Sylvester did.
At school, Mike and Jakeem go into the restroom and Mike gives Jakeem a wish that he wrote down, insisting that it's foolproof. Jakeem takes out the pen and reads the wish, which is precisely worded. The Thunderbolt emerges from the pen and writes on the wall that the killer has many names. Jakeem warns Mike that he can't make two wishes for the same thing, and Mike figures they're better get out.
Courtney and Sylvester go to Richard's house, Sylvester figuring he'd better apologize. Sylvester says that he was out of line, and Richard says that he would have dragged Gambler into the Shadowlands. When Sylvester points out that Richard let the JSA die, Richard tells Sylvester that Pat was the only one at Sylvester's funeral. He says that nobody wants Sylvester there, and Sylvester should give Courtney the Staff to go.
The Staff flies over into Sylvester's hand, and he blasts Richard down. Courtney tells Sylvester to stop, but he points the Staff at Richard and says that he killed the JSA. Courtney calls the Staff back to him, and Richard says that Maria can confirm that he was at the diner with Maria when Gambler died. Richard says that he has problems of his own to attend to and teleports away, and Sylvester tells Courtney that he screwed up.
That night at the Whitmore house, Pat and Barbara confront Sylvester and Courtney, and Pat points out that Sylvester was out of line taking Courtney out of line and attacking Richard. He says that Richard was the one who told him that they had to kill Bruce, and Sylvester took the information to the JSA. Sylvester figures that the JSA's final destruction all goes back to Sylvester, and Sylvester is mad at himself, not Richard, for killing the JSA. He wonders why he got to come back, and wonders why he's there instead of the other heroes. With that, Sylvester walks off.
At the garage, Rick works on the hourglass as Beth looks on. He tells her that the timing on the hourglass is off, and the time it gives him super-strong has been off. Richard teleports in and says that he's sorry about Rick's problems, and Beth notices that Richard doesn't look so good. Richard says that he ran into something large and stupid, and tells them that he's leaving to tend to his own matters. First, he apologizes to Rick for not being able to help him with Grundy's return, but not to give up. With that, he teleports away.
In the basement, Sylvester talks to the Staff and says it was right to go to Courtney. Courtney comes in and tells Sylvester that Past has taught her a lot, including the fact that she needs to be more than Stargirl. She tells Sylvester that he can have a life as Sylvester, and Blue Valley has been a second chance for a lot of people. Courtney believes that it can be a second chance for Sylvester. They both agree that Richard didn't kill Gambler, and Sylvester wonders who else there is.
Cameron is at his father's house, and tells his grandparents that it hurts when he pains. They tell him that he's destined for greater things than art, and he looks at a painting he made of his father.
In the ISA base, Cindy turns on Gambler's laptop and brings up the search Gambler was conducting for Becky.
Paula is at the gym with Larry, and they're both working out. He says that it's only a matter of time until they find out, and Paula agrees as she kicks her workout bag across the room with super strength.
