Absolutely Fascinating...

To be honest, I went into FIRE ANTS: THE INVINCIBLE ARMY expecting just another nature documentary. I was astonished to find instead, an in depth, somewhat unsettling account of an incredible insect.

Michael Watchulonis shows us a creature so adaptable, resilient, and collectively intelligent that we had better take notice of its migration and already-vast geographic conquest.

THE BEST BITS: #1- The sequence showing how the ants form a living raft in water. Not just some crude "boat", this floating bivouac serves as a full colony / life support system lasting for months at a time! #2- Scientists examining the ants' "hive mind", and the odd, ingenious ways in which they move in unison. They grip onto each other and drip like honey when poured out of a beaker! Or, fold into a sphere when spun around!

One of the more frightening parts of the film recounts the US government's failed attempts to eradicate the tiny marauders with pesticides, resulting in ecological disaster! Thankfully, nature itself provides a surprising, jaw-dropping answer that makes our feeble efforts look foolish by comparison.

Highly educational, entertaining, and cautionary...
