When looking up the starling species of bird on Google, a few questions pop up. Why are starlings bad? Are starlings good for anything? Why are starlings a problem? Director Theodore Melfi’s The Starling could be substituted for its eponymous bird enemy in any of those sentences. Melfi, who has made hits like St. Vincent and Hidden Figures, takes another swing with his latest, a sappy, melodramatic drama from Netflix.
Starring Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd as a married couple reeling from their death of their young daughter, The Starling plays into that logline, using weepy original songs from known folk entities like The Lumineers to hammer home a point: losing a child is hard, but don’t worry, there’s still hope. The film takes no time in its ham-fisted metaphors and intentionality, assuming that tragedy equates to story, that a somber score equates to heartache, that death equates to tears.

Season three of international thriller drama series Departure, headlined by Archie Panjabi, has begun production in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Toronto. Will & Grace alum Eric McCormack has joined the series, produced by Shaftesbury in association with Corus Entertainment, Starlings Television and Red Arrow Studios International.
Departure, whose existing two seasons are streaming on Peacock, was renewed for a third season by Canadian network Global in May. Peacock picked up Seasons 1 and 2, which also starred the late Christopher Plummer, after screening them so it is too early to say if the streamer will also take in Season 3.
Created by Vincent Shiao, with Jackie May serving as showrunner and Canadian Screen Award winner T.J. Scott as director, Departure centers on the mystery of The Queen of the Narrows ferry, destined for St. John’s Newfoundland, which sinks in record time with many of its 500 passangers on board.

Brendan Coyle has revealed that the second series of Sky1 comedy drama Starlings will have a much "darker" tone.
The actor, who stars alongside Lesley Sharp in the series, said that the moments of "poignancy and conflict" had been the most successful in the first series.
"Series one started with a much lighter and more comedic tone. It had a more gentle tone than series two. But the writers noticed across the course of the series, the moments of poignancy and conflict were what the audience invested in," said Coyle.
"The boys are still very good at the gags and the slapstick and they know their comedy history very well, but they were more encouraged in series two to push the boat out with more drama.
"The characters are growing up and there's a huge conflict and trauma that happens in the marriage between Terry and Jan. We've also changed the way it's shot,...

The 47-year-old star of Scott & Bailey on adoption, acting and Russell T Davies
People can't place me. I'll be in the supermarket and they'll say, "Are you the woman who goes to the gym with my sister?" And I'll say, "I don't know. Probably." You can choose to go about your life attracting attention or deflecting it. I'm very happy to do my work and then slip into my private life.
I would go anywhere and do anything for Russell T Davies. We did some great work 10 years ago – the TV series Bob & Rose and The Second Coming. It's not true that he wanted me to be the first female Doctor Who, but I would if he asked, obviously.
Being adopted is different for everybody. For me it has always meant that at some level I don't belong anywhere. It wasn't my adoptive parents who created that feeling – they were...
