AFI's Master Class: The Art of Collaboration: David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg (2012)

The second documentary in the series features David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg sitting down with the AFI to talk about some of the films they've made together as well as other films that influenced them. Russell picked clips from IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and THE 400 BLOWS while Wahlberg selected THE ROARING TWENTIES and MAN OF A 1,000 FACES, two James Cagney movies. It was interesting seeing some of the selections that they made and especially Wahlberg who goes into details about how his father turned him onto movies. He talks about why the Cagney type was a lot more important to him than someone like a Paul Newman or Robert Redford. I was pretty impressed with what Wahlberg took away from these films and especially his opinions on Lon Chaney. The two of them then got to their own movies like THREE KINGS and THE FIGHTER where they discuss various decisions that they made on the sets. Also, the film ends ala Inside the Actors Studio, with the two answering questions from the crowd. Overall this was another good entry in the series that fans of the two should enjoy watching.
