Simple idea but the joke wears thin quickly and the novelty of the stars doesn't add much

On December 15th Allan McLeod drank half a bottle of whiskey and then recited a classic Christmas poem, "The Night Before Christmas".

I was on a bit of an Eva Mendes tip this evening and somehow this led me to watch two Christmas films – one with her in the cast, another with her directing. This was the one that showed up on her resume and I came to it without knowing that this is apparently a webseries of shorts where a narrator tells a story on camera but only after they get totally drunk. In this case we have a drunk Allan McLeod slurring his way through a classic Christmas poem while a handful of celebs act it out. It sounds like a great idea full of novelty and laughs but to be honest the joke wears thin very quickly.

McLeod is amusing because he is drunk but he is not that funny. Meanwhile the reenactment of the poem is full of famous faces but none of them do much other than be good sports in appearing in this short film. It is a shame that more was not done with it – I know these shorts are popular (and apparently led to a full show "Drunk History") but it really wore thin for me very quickly and even the novelty of the stars didn't add too much.

Great cast, not so great movie

"Drunk History Christmas" is a 5-minute short film for the holidays made by Funnyordie 4 years ago. It features Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes and Jim Carrey, which is a really big-name cast for such a short movie, especially as these 4 were probably even bigger stars back then than they are today. Unfortunately, they do not speak a word in this one. i am not familiar with the "Drunk History" series, but I see Emmy nominees Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner here as writer and director.

So yeah, we have a drunk guy tell a little Christmas tale, but most of the time he complains about messing up the story. Gosling, Mendes and Carrey play the protagonists in his story. I must say it was fun to see Jim Carrey as Santa, but that is also pretty much the only memorable aspect here. Not a funny short film sadly. Not recommended.
