Legendary country star Merle Haggard died Wednesday on his 79th birthday, a coincidence that wouldn't seem out of place in one of Haggard's many indispensable contributions to country music. But Haggard didn't just pen hits like "Okie from Muskogee," "Sing Me Back Home" and "Mama Tried." He fundamentally altered the course of country music on a granular level, introducing a sonic blueprint that would come to be known as "the Bakersfield sound," a rough-hewn counterpoint to the sweeter sounds coming out of Nashville at the same time. Born in Bakersfield, California, to Dust Bowl migrants from Oklahoma, Haggard spent large...

1. William Parker: For Those Who Are, Still (Aum Fidelity/Centering)
I have been an admirer and observer of William Parker for a quarter century, but nothing prepared me for the impact of this three-disc set's final CD, which features an orchestral composition, Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still, which ranks high among the best orchestral music of the 21st century, and I'm including classical composers. In other words, don't cringe while imagining the usual jazz-with-strings hack job. There are moments in Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still -- particularly when the choir is singing Parker's poems of life and loss and creation -- when the grandeur of the year's most fashionable jazz album, Kamasi Washington's The Epic (also a three-cd set) comes to mind, but the difference -- the reason Parker's set ranks much higher -- is that his orchestrations are vastly more contrapuntal, colorful, individual, and just plain daring.

Another year, another move further away from caring about pop. Whether that's pop's fault or mine, I'm not sure. But there was still plenty of great new music released in 2015, and here, according to my idiosyncratic tastes, are the best albums, or at least my favorites.
1. Wire: Wire (Pink Flag)
This is said to be the first time that Bruce Gilbert's replacement, guitarist Matthew Simms, was heavily involved in the creation of a Wire album, and the result is...the closest Wire has ever come to sounding like a Colin Newman album. I exaggerate for effect, but only slightly: most everything thrums along smoothly and motorik-ly, he takes all the lead vocals (though Graham Lewis supposedly wrote many of the lyrics), and there are none of the post-punkier outbursts of the group's previous two reunion albums, though near the end of Wire, the one-two punch of "Split Your Ends" and "Octopus" come close.

I have no idea just how many hours of my life I’ve spent pretending to be a rock star with the Rock Band series. It’s to the point where Rock Band 4 is easily my most anticipated release of the year. I’ve got my old Dlc downloaded and my drum and guitar controllers are ready to go on the Xbox One as I eagerly awaiting the game’s release tomorrow.
In fact, I am so eager to learn more about the game that I contacted Harmonix, whose PR and Communications Lead, Nick Chester, was kind enough to answer a few questions. While most of the answers he gave me are more confirmation of things we already know, I did learn a few interesting things.
For example, ever wonder why The Who are the only band to appear in every main Rock Band game?

As I mentioned in its introduction, my Steely Dan appreciation last week stemmed from an email exchange with several other people. And my article was not the last word by a long shot. One of the participants, Tony Alterman, is responding with his own album-by-album review, and his brother, CultureCatch's own Ian Alterman, is pitching in with his own observations. Here, with punctuation corrected and tangents omitted, is the origin of the debate and its continuation.
Tony Alterman:
Katy Lied -- Probably [Steely Dan's] fourth-best album, after Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and Royal Scam, in that order. Of course, fourth-best for Steely Dan is a bit like Beethoven's fourth-best symphony -- shades of difference here.
Ian:
Re: Steely Dan, it might be heresy, but I think Royal Scam is better than Aja. So my order would be Royal Scam, Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and then...well...it wouldn’t be Katy Lied.

So tonight's "American Idol" theme is basically Deja Vu? Weird. Wednesday's (April 2) "Idol" theme is officially Back to the Start and it apparently means that we're going to be hearing the Top 8 sing the songs they auditioned with. Are we really deep enough into this season to be getting repeat performances? Don't we want to hear singers do fresh things? I do. But maybe I'm wrong? To me, this feels like a theme that's intended to help sagging frontrunners like Sam Woolf, but what do I know. Click through and we'll celebrate what is sure to be a filler-filled telecast together... 8:00 p.m. We've got eight performers and two hours. Are we going to get to duos this week? Trios? Something so that this isn't just wheel-spinning for a full two hours? 8:01 p.m. The filler starts with a tribute to funny moments from the judges in the auditions,...

Who doesn’t love a good guitar solo?
Although when Guitar Hero came out, the creators proclaimed it the death of Air Guitar, that series has itself keeled over and been buried under a wealth of plastic instruments and embarrassing bedroom-posturing.
There are a couple entries where I’ve paired guys together, being that their careers are based off duel-lead guitar lines and tag-teamed compositions, complimenting each others’ playing to make the overall sound recognisable as both artists.
This is a list for guitarists that are either still making waves in 2013 or are fairly new to the overall gamut of talent that’s emerged since the likes of Link Wray and Les Paul put some balls behind their instruments (literally and metaphorically) and redefined the entire soundscape of music.

Waukesha, Wis. — The music icon whose solid-body electric guitar paved the way for rock `n' roll is now getting a permanent exhibit in his Wisconsin hometown, after more than a decade in the making.
Les Paul, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician who performed regularly into his 90s with his band, developed technology and recording techniques that set the standard in the music industry, including tape echo, multitrack recordings and overdubs . There are permanent exhibits devoted to him at other museums, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland, but he wanted something closer to home.
So he loaned the Waukesha County Museum personal items and helped raise funds to make the effort a reality, including writing a personal $25,000 check for expenses and playing a concert to raise $100,000.
"I think it's more personal," he told The Associated Press in 2004. "It's going to be the best exhibit of all.

Yesterday was Sir Christopher Lee's 91st birthday, and what better way to mark the occasion than the release of his second heavy metal album? Charlemagne: The Omens of Death was recorded with current Judas Priest guitarist Richie Faulkner and 2009 Guitar Idol runner-up Hedras Ramos, and continues the headbanging Holy Roman concept narrative begun on Lee's 2010 opus Charlemagne: By The Sword And The Cross."I have been metal for many years, only I did not know it," Lee explained three years ago, talking about his love and respect for Rhapsody of Fire and Manowar, both of whom he'd worked with. "Lots of people see me as metal," he went on. "It has come as a great surprise." Yes. The clip above features Lee describing Black Sabbath as "one of the greatest metal bands ever," and includes footage of his Metal Hammer interview with Tony Iommi. This time, he's keen to explain,...

Austin, Texas — Natalie Maines is starting out nervous on stage, almost 10 years to the day that the Dixie Chicks spitfire slammed then-President George W. Bush and forever changed the fate and fortunes of the country superstars.
On this night she barely speaks between songs.
Her hair slicks up in a punkish pompadour. She looks slimmer than when the Dixie Chicks began a hiatus in 2007 that may never end. The crowd at the South by Southwest music festival to hear Maines perform her solo debut "Mother" for only the second time is a healthy size, but it is also far from a packed house.
"We missed you, Natalie!" one fan hollers.
Maines smiles but doesn't banter back.
"I ask myself, `Why is that? What are you doing, girl?'" Maines told The Associated Press the next morning at a downtown Austin hotel. "I think right now I have so much to remember.

Versatile guitarist who had a million-selling hit with Love Is Strange
Mickey Baker, who has died aged 87, was one of the most versatile and prolific guitarists of his era. During the 1950s, any producer making R&B or rock'n'roll records in New York would have Baker's name in his contacts book, and he played on innumerable sessions for Atlantic, Savoy and other labels, accompanying vocal groups including the Drifters and the Coasters and blues singers such as Champion Jack Dupree, Nappy Brown and Lavern Baker. Among the many hit records to which he made original and distinctive contributions were Ruth Brown's (Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean, the Coasters' I'm a Hog for You and Joe Turner's Shake, Rattle and Roll.

Years ago, in ancient Rome, a clever method was devised to find wealth beyond people's wildest imaginings – the Romans headed to streams and mountainsides to pan for gold. You'd separate the grit from the gold and bingo! One or two nuggets of worth to be had – of course, the only problem is making your way through the dirt and grit to find anything of value.
Which brings me onto Doctor Who's latest escapade – if you'd already seen the many trailers on BBC1, you'll know that it's called Dinosaurs!!! On. A. Spaceship!!! Yes, Doctor, thanks for stating the obvious. As far as titles go, it's not exactly the best. What next? Killer Robots On A Sandminer? Spaghetti Monsters In A Nuclear Reactor? Before we get too far into this, I want everybody to remember that there was a time when the members of Mötley Crüe were presumed to be dangerous servants of the Devil.
I should also say that I’m relatively new to the notion of Illuminati Satanism, and that anything you read herein has been out there in some form or another for ten or more years. If you’re pressed for time, I can save you the trouble of reading on and just tell you right now that I think the whole notion of selling one’s soul to the Devil for a few years of fame is a load of horseshit.
In music, the first notable embodiment of soul merchant was Paganini, the gambling, womanizing, show-off violin virtuoso who dazzled Europe in the late eighteenth and early ninteenth century. If you’re not inclined toward classical music, suffice...

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) — Federal prosecutors on Monday announced a deal to drop a criminal case against Gibson Guitar Corp. after the instrument maker acknowledged its importations of exotic wood violated environmental laws.
Nashville-based Gibson agreed to pay a $300,000 penalty, forfeit claims to about $262,000 worth of wood seized by federal agents and contribute $50,000 to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to promote the conservation of protected tree species.
"The agreement is fair and just in that it assesses serious penalties for Gibson's behavior while allowing Gibson to continue to focus on the business of making guitars," U.S. Attorney Jerry Martin said in a statement.
Gibson didn't immediately respond to messages left Monday seeking comment. The privately held company is considered one of the top makers of acoustic and electric guitars, including the iconic Les Paul introduced in 1952.

Welcome to season five of True Blood – more characters, sex, betrayal, blood, and puns about Sookie’s “super snatch”. Alan Ball’s final venture into everyone’s favorite gothic soap opera opened with the fast pacing, cheeky humor, and enough plot threads to weave a brand new silk kimono for Lafayette that fans fell in love with – and no faeries!
Yes, the previous twelve episodes constituted a bigger mess than that time that vampire got killed (remember that time?), but this season premiere gives me hope that the tailspin the series gradually dipped into post season two is about to take a turn for the better.
Optimism aside though, what’s become one of True Blood’s calling cards is potentially its fatal flaw – too much time devoted to too many insignificant stories. There was plenty to get excited about here but it wouldn’t be...
