As the coronavirus-forced lockdown continues, movie studios have realized releasing new titles directly for consumers to stream and rent at home may continue to be necessary. Upcoming releases on subscription platforms and VOD range from horror films for stay-at-home Halloween to family movies for the holiday season.
While a handful of high-profile films still plan to premiere in theaters, there is a wealth of content to choose from on home viewing platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus or Apple Plus. Many more titles are available through virtual cinemas and on rental/purchase platforms such as iTunes.
October is particularly loaded with spooky new movies, including horror titles “Books of Blood” on Hulu, “Scare me” on Shudder and “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” on Netflix. Premiering Oct. 21, Netflix’s romantic drama “Rebecca” centers on a newlywed who is faced with the legacy of her husband’s late wife.

"His eyes. I'll never forget that look in his eyes." 1091 Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for Tar, an indie monster horror film from filmmaker Aaron Wolf (of LDUniversity). For 40,000 years, a long forgotten wetland teemed with ancient creatures, but now all that’s left is a pit of hot, sticky tar surrounded by a vast urban landscape. For Barry Greenwood and his son Zach, there's not too much left of their family business either. With the city's subway expanding under their feet and their office building slated for demolition, Barry, Zach and their employees are forced to shut down their shop and move out. But when something primal is awoken by the underground construction, a night of somber packing becomes a desperate fight for survival. Starring Timothy Bottoms, Aaron Wolf, Graham Greene, and Max Perlich. There's no real shots of the monster found in this trailer, probably for...

CBS has scheduled two new reality series for this summer, and in doing so also postponed the lonnnng-awaited return of The Amazing Race.
Season 32 of The Amazing Race, which had completed production prior to the pandemic and was originally set to premiere Wednesday, May 20, instead will arrive later in 2020, given the Emmy-winning series’ value to the network as a “utility player” that can air on any night and in any time period — highly important with the fate of so many returning and possibly new fall series up in the air during the ongoing production shutdown.

Thanks to the coronavirus, The Amazing Race is not running right now.
“Due to increased concerns and uncertainty regarding the coronavirus around the world, CBS and the producers of The Amazing Race have taken the precautionary measure of temporarily suspending production on the 33rd season of the series,” the network said today. “All contestants and production staff are in the process of returning home.”
Having already filmed only a trio of episodes in the UK, the 33rd season of the series from CBS TV Studios, Earthview, Jerry Bruckheimer Television and ABC Studios was barely into production before becoming the latest entertainment industry project to catch a chill, so to speak.
“At this time, no Racers or anyone on the production team traveling with them have contracted the virus or shown symptoms, and we are not aware of anyone being exposed to it,” CBS added Friday.

Omar Zúñiga Hidalgo’s debut solo feature “Los fuertes” has been picked up by Buenos Aires-based sales agent Meikincine which will represent the film’s rights on the international market.
“Los fuertes” is a celebratory vision of a love between a big city guy and a small town male boatswain on the Chilean coast. When romance blossoms between them, the relationship will force them to face a hostile society and find ways to mature and gain personal independence.
Zúñiga, Dominga Sotomayor and Catalina Marín are co-founders of Cinestación Producciones, the Santiago-based production outfit behind “Los fuertes” and Sotomayor’s own Locarno best director winner “Too Late to Die Young.”
Zúñiga was one of 11 directors who took on one of 11 segments chronicling Pulitzer prize-winning Ck Williams’ life in 2012’s “The Color of Time.” The film featured the likes of James Franco, Mila Kunis, Jessica Chastain and Zach Braff. It is inspired...

Madrid — Omar Zuñiga’s “Los Fuertes,’ Sebastián Muñoz’s “The Prince” and Carlos Piñeiro’s “Sirena” have been selected for the 34th, twice-yearly, Films in Progress, a Latin American pix-in-post competition which runs Sept.24-26 at Spain’s San Sebastián Festival, representing one of the event’s biggest industry attractions for arthouse sales agents and distributors.
Strong on co-productions – a reflection if the bi-lateral and minority co-production funds in place in Brazil, Argentina and Chile – this year’s selection packs five first features – six if you count Argentine Nicolas Savignone’s prior “Los desechables” as a medium-feature – a reminder of the hordes of filmmakers pouring out of film schools in Latin America, powering up production levels dramatically over the last decade.

Official New Trailer For James Franco and Milla Jovovich's Post-Apocalyptic Action Film Future World
Last week, a trailer was released for a new sci-fi western-style film produced by Lionsgate called Future World. That was not an official trailer and the studio asked us to take the post down until the official trailer was released. Well now the official trailer has been released and my opinion of it hasn't changed. It still looks awful. Below you will find my original post, along with a new synopsis and the official trailer.
Future World was co-directed by and stars James Franco. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world exactly like Mad Max, and it looks like a pretty terrible film. I don't know how Franco went from directing a great film like The Disaster Artist, to this Future World movie, but he did, and I don't know what he was thinking! Maybe he thought it would be fun?

This film fan admits to enjoying post apocalyptic fare. It was films like Albert Puyn's Cyborg (1989) and Night of the Comet (1984) that shaped the film landscape, a millenia ago. Director James Franco looks equally inspired by films of the '80s, including George Miller's The Road Warrior (1981). His latest picture, co-directed by Bruce Thierry Cheung (The Color of Time, 2012), creates a harsh landscape. In Future World, a young man looks for a cure, to stave off his mother's death. What he is not prepared for is a world filled with cyborgs, wasters and motorcycle riding bandits. The film hosts a number of recognizable names, in the film's first trailer. Viewers may recognize a few actors. Franco not only directs, but stars as some sort of junk dealer. Other bandits roam the wastes as Tattooed Face (Method Man) and Love Lord (Snoop Dogg). Even actress Lucy Liu makes a late appearance as the Queen.

Happy Monday, Bachelor Nation.
On tonight’s episode, Rachel Lindsay brought the final three guys home to meet her family. Now generally, after hometowns, the finalists are permanently separated (presumably to avoid awkward interactions as the season approaches its conclusion), while the lead’s family will fly to the exotic final destination to meet their potential future in-laws. But this season, because Rachel’s sister was eight months pregnant at the time and couldn’t travel, Peter, Bryan and Eric flew to Dallas, Rachel’s hometown, to meet the family there instead. Spoiler alert? Not everyone made a glowing first impression.

David Bowie‘s widow Iman remembered her late husband on the first anniversary of his death with an Instagram post showing a double rainbow across the New York City skyline.
As she’s been doing with other posts centered around memorializing her husband, Iman captioned the pic with “Bowie Forever” and “Forever Love.”

As she crosses the country on her Pure & Simple tour, Dolly Parton can sense the political turmoil. "Everything is so crazy and chaotic out there right now. I do see the divide," she tells People. But as an icon of both country music and gay culture, as a global superstar who embraces her faith without excluding others - and, frankly, as the closest thing we've got to pure sunshine incarnate, Dolly might be the perfect bridge for that divide. "I just try to make people feel a little better. Let them know that it's going to be Ok," says Dolly...

The three vignettes that compose “Yosemite” are fraught with threats of dangers that, for the most part, never surface. The coming-of-age tales, based on short stories by James Franco and adapted by writer-director Gabrielle Demeestere (“The Color of Time”), intertwine and, after approximately 80 minutes, the end credits roll. Yet you’re left feeling as if each story needed another chapter before the film could satisfactorily close. “Yosemite” largely takes place in Palo Alto, Calif., Franco’s hometown. It’s 1985, and three fifth-grade boys are navigating school, difficulties at home, and the fluidity of friendship. Meanwhile, the city has in its midst.

Following in the footsteps of Gia Coppola's 2013 effort "Palo Alto," "Yosemite" marks the second adaptation of a James Franco short story collection. This time, the source material is Franco's second effort, "A California Childhood," which similarly tackles themes of adolescence and friendship in his hometown Palo Alto. After her debut effort "Tar," "Yosemite" is the debut feature for French writer-director Gabrielle Demeestere. Like "Palo Alto,""Yosemite" sees Franco serve as executive producer and as a featured actor. Of the hundreds of films screened at festivals across the nation only a handful will wind up at your local theaters, and that goes for those lucky enough to have been viewed at the growingly prestigious Tribeca Film Festival (Tff).
A month has passed, and the media has already unremembered the 14th edition of Tribeca, which had an overall attendance of 467,000 -- and now it's beginning to forget Cannes and its offerings, such as Todd Haynes' Carol, which already has a 2016 Oscar buzz surrounding it. And by tomorrow, anticipation will start growing for the Telluride, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals, and so forth. A sisyphean cycle if there ever was one. But thanks to some wise studios distributing several of Tribeca's offerings, this year's Fest's imprint might last a little longer.
There's the hauntingly exuberant documentary The Wolfpack (opening June 12th) that, pre-tff, started garnering plaudits at Sundance.

Update: Shortly after our original post launched two new cast members were drafted onto the show. The Boy Next Door star Ryan Guzman is now onboard with Deadline suggesting that he “may be playing a former military guy”. That is, if earlier character profiles circulating the industry are still in play. If that’s the case then the next new arrival Finding Cody‘s Gatlin Green may be playing an “attractive popular girl. ” Scintillating description.

The North Carolina Film Critics Association has announced its list of nominees in a modest array of categories this season, and once again, it's "Birdman" leading the way, with seven nominations. One of those came for the Tar Heel Award, recognizing artists with ties to North Carolina. Wilkesboro native Zach Galifianakis, who in my opinion actually deserves a hard look for Best Supporting Actor consideration, got a notice there. Check out the full list of nominees below. Paul Thomas Anderson’s legion of fans will get their chance to see the filmmaker’s latest Inherent Vice – at least those in New York and L.A. after a long build-up of anticipation. Studio Warner Bros. is handling the director’s latest, set in a drug-laced L.A. in the 1970s. Barring some unforeseen cataclysm, the feature is easily going to be this week’s b.o. superstar and likely one of the year’s biggest per screen debuts. How it will fare against other fall b.o. knock-outs like Searchlight’s Birdman or TWC’s The Imitation Game remains to be seen. A slew of Specialty openers will coincide with the Inherent Vice juggernaut. A24 will open Oscar-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s The Captive day and date after an early fall bow in the director’s native Canada. Sundance Selects will expose Free The Nipple in New York...

Translators introduction: This article by Mireille Latil Le Dantec, the second of two parts, was originally published in issue 40 of Cinématographe, September 1978. The previous issue of the magazine had included a dossier on "La qualité française" and a book of a never-shot script by Jean Grémillon (Le Printemps de la Liberté or The Spring of Freedom) had recently been published. The time was ripe for a re-evaluation of Grémillon's films and a resuscitation of his undervalued career. As this re-evaluation appears to still be happening nearly 40 years later—Grémillon's films have only recently seen DVD releases and a 35mm retrospective begins this week at Museum of the Moving Image in Queens—this article and its follow-up gives us an important view of a French perspective on Grémillon's work by a very perceptive critic doing the initial heavy-lifting in bringing the proper attention to the filmmaker's work.

This is a reprint of our review from the 2012 Rome Film Festival where "The Color Of Time" screened under its original title "Tar." It's difficult to know quite what to make of "Tar," a multi-authored project seemingly coaxed into being by the sheer force of James Franco's current artistic cachet. Playing In Competition in the Xxi sidebar of the Rome Film Festival, the film represents the work of twelve newbie directors -- Nyu film students all -- and attempts to create an impressionistic interpretation of the work of poet Ck Williams, who himself appears occasionally, reading from his collection. Championed by and starring Franco, amongst a starry cast including Mila Kunis, Jessica Chastain, Henry Hopper, Bruce Campbell and Zach Braff, the film shifts around in time and mood, using four different actors (Franco one of them) to depict Williams at different stages in his life, with the scenes sometimes...

In his recent tear through an AP American Lit syllabus, James Franco has played poets Allen Ginsberg and Hart Crane and adapted William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying and The Sound and the Fury. Among the actor-director-whatever's other endeavors are an upcoming Charles Bukowski biopic and The Color of Time, a faded gimcrack of a film, in which Franco plays the Pulitzer Prize–winning poet C.K. Williams. While the This Is the End star's enthusiasm for (white, male) lit-luminaries is admirable, it's disappointing that Franco can't marshal his unflagging energies and famous friends like Mila Kunis and Jessica Chastain into anything more interesting than reciting Williams's poetry in voiceover while re-creating familiar scenes of domestic turmoil. But surely Franc...

There is poetry in all things, if we only know where to look. The poet’s job is to notice this wonderment, this awesome beauty of everyday life and everything around us and put it into words so we can realize what an amazing thing life and the world really is.
The Color Of Time is a daring experimental film based on the poetry of C.K. Williams, a Pulitzer Prize winner. I read a lot but quite frankly poetry is not my favorite, especially newer and current poets. After viewing The Color Of Time I intend to seek out C.K. Williams’ poetry. A lovely and wonderful little film has been fashioned from his work.

James Franco and Mila Kunis costarred last year in Oz the Great and Powerful, but while they were filming the big budget fantasy flick, they were also doing something much more indie. The two were shooting The Color of Time, a film based on the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet C.K. Williams. Franco plays Williams with Kunis as his wife and mother of their young son. The movie focuses on Williams as he prepares for a reading in New York City, but he's having trouble creating new work as he struggles with memories of his past. James Franco stars as Pulitzer Prize winning poet C.K. Williams in The Color of Time. The film centers on the struggles of the real-life writer, from childhood throughout his career. The film has eleven credited directors, so the film could be a beautiful experiment or a wonderful mess. There is also a very Terrance Malick-esque quality to the trailer, which should be interesting to see how that style carries over into the full, given that no one can do Malick besides Malick (and even then it’s a little iffy sometimes). The Color of Time also stars Mila Kunis, Jessica Chastain, Zach Braff, Henry Hopper, and the always-fantastic Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame.

James Franco and Mila Kunis play a couple in a rut in the trailer for their upcoming film The Color of Time. In the film, Franco portrays real-life writer C.K. Williams, who won the Pulitzer prize for poetry in 2000. The trailer shows the film jumping in chronology, as C.K. is seen both as an adult and while interacting as a child with his mother. "You're gonna get a whoopin' so hard," someone ominously informs Franco's character in one scene. The James Franco-produced “The Color of Time” (formerly titled “Tar” when it premiered at last year’s Rome Film Festival) examines the life and work of Pulitzer Prize winning poet C.K. Williams. The film takes an unusual approach to the material, in that an ensemble of 12 directors (all are New York University students) collaborated with the main cast. But this is not an anthology film —the directors worked together to create a single narrative. The story follows a young Williams, living with his wife and young son and grappling with both the dark and idyllic memories of his past as he prepares for a reading in New York City. Judging from the U.S. trailer, the directors decided to really go for the Terence Malick look. But unfortunately, the all-star cast including Franco (as Williams), Mila Kunis, Jessica Chastain, Zach Braff, Bruce Campbell and Henry Hopper can't make the dreamy material work.
