Freeform has ordered a one-hour drama pilot from writer Keith Staskiewicz and executive producer Peter Nowalk.
Titled “Close Up,” the project is set in Centreville, New Jersey, a suburban town just like any other, at least on the surface. Centreville high school student Rachel Guyer is on a mission to expose the truth about her seemingly normal hometown and turn her community inside out.
Nowalk previously created the ABC series “How to Get Away With Murder,” and previously worked on fellow Shondaland shows “Scandal” and “Grey’s Anatomy” as well. Staskiewicz previously wrote for the animated series “Three Delivery.”
The pilot will be produced by ABC Signature Studios, where Nowalk is currently under an overall deal.
“‘Close Up’ tells a wonderfully layered story that illuminates the strength behind one young woman’s act of rebellion and its impact on changing the world,” said Lauren Corrao, executive vice president of original programming and development for Freeform.

How to make movies that win awards and break box office records.
Forget Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh. Bill Condon’s career really began with Gods and Monsters, for which he won the adapted screenplay Oscar. He would go on to receive another writing nomination, for Chicago, and over the past 15 years he’s directed award-worthy performances, some of them surprises, he’s drawn non-Twilight fans into that franchise, and he just released what’s looking to be the most successful musical of all time.
Obviously, after the massive opening weekend Condon had with Beauty and the Beast, he’s a filmmaker worth looking up to. He hasn’t always delivered hits or Academy favorites, but the director of such movies as Dreamgirls, Mr. Holmes, Kinsey, The Fifth Estate, and both parts of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn is a distinct talent in Hollywood, one who regularly makes a kind of pop prestige picture, or...

Hemdale became one of the largest indie studios of the 80s with films like The Terminator and Platoon. Ryan charts its turbulent history...
When Platoon won four Oscars in 1987, it marked not only a new chapter in Oliver Stone's career as a filmmaker, but also the end of a decade-long battle. Since the 1970s, Stone had been struggling to make his harrowing account of the horrors he'd seen firsthand as a soldier in the Vietnam conflict, but was famously turned down by every major studio in Hollywood.
Platoon, and Stone, finally found sanctuary at a small independent studio with a grand-sounding name: the Hemdale Film Corporation. It was Hemdale, and its co-founder John Daly, that had taken a chance on Stone, and when Platoon came out in 1986, the gamble proved to be a shrewd one: its $6m investment was covered by the first month's ticket sales, and the film...
