More strong than weak, but overall not a too amazing awards show

The title "The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards" here is fairly telling because like the host said this is the second biggest movie awards show of the year 2012. It was nominated for an Emmy, which does not sound bad at all, but compared to other editions, it is a fairly mediocre achievement awards-wise because (according to imdb) there is not one other nomination. This one ran for slightly over 2 hours and did not only honor the best theatrical movies of the year (or what they thought they would be), but also the finestg the small screen had to offer. There are even some shows like the two winners for drama and comedy Homeland and Modern Family that are still running nowadays, even if their glory days, at least awards-wise, seem to be long over. Now first things first: The host here is Ricky Gervais and this was not the only time he hosted. I like him a lot and think he is always funny and that means quite something as I am not into beer that much. still I felt that even if he was one of the better things about the night that he was not at his peak. He did seem a bit lackluster and I know it is part of his routine too, but still. Also kinda funny to watch some of the people he introduced reacting to him, some in a funny manner, other pretty weak. Madonna sure did a good job challenging Gervais. Now as for the awards, I am mostly happy I guess. The Descendants and The Artist are both really good films and deserving, not that Hugo would have been undeserving, but Scorsese winning the big prize here (but not at the Oscars) made up for it. Also the film's two lead actors were really good and deserving of their honors. Plummer's film I haven't seen, but nice to see him win the awards. Spencer is a joke, but it's not the first time they just hand the supporting category for free to Black actors. She is likable (or at least she acts in such a way), so is her character in The Help, but there are at least two other more deserving supporting performances in the same film. Williams' Monroe portrayal I still haven't seen, shame on me. Woody Allen is always nice to win, don't talk much about his private life. Speaking of that, many will probably not be too amused today about Harvey Weinstein and how they call him The Finisher here on some occasions and that certainly includes Meryl Streep. I liked her a lot when I was younger, but really the older I get and more I see from her, she seems really fake, also here how she reacts in the most awkwardly humble way "Oh I am so undeserving!" when her name is announced. She also went on to win the Oscar for her Maggie Thatcher portrayal, even if I remember that Viola Davis was the odds-on favorite. Oh well, she is not any better. Her face expression when we hearf Streep's name being announced and also during the speech shows that she may not be as generous as she may seem and act. What was up with the glasses or whatever that was by the way.

As for small screen, I already mentioned the two big winners early on. I love Modern Family, good for them, Homeland I am not too big on. By the way where was Jon Hamm in the Drama Actor category? Was Mad Men pausing that year? I am not sure. But it is alright I guess. Oh yeah Madonna won a Golden Globe and the other Queen of Pop nominated int he same category was not too happy about it. You know who I mean, especially if you have seen the show. He has been in talks a lot recently with his biopic. Adventures of Tintin won Bestg Animated Feature, well Spielberg (and Jackson) of course they did, but I think the film was deemed ineligible for the Oscars in that category and Rango prevailed. Starring Johnny Depp who showed up right at the start and was the first "victim" of Gervais' hosting. Still he's different compared to other hosts. I like it. I also liked to see Chris Cornell nominated. May he rest in peace, what a talented artist and way too early loss. Iran's A Separation won best Foreign Language film and that was justg the first of two triumphant recent films by Farhadi, he is so good right now. I wonder if he was surprised himself the Globes did not give it to Angelina Jolie and her movie. She was still with Brad at that time, which does feel a bit awkward too looking at how things ended between them. And Clooney also was not yet with the one he has been for a long time now. He was pretty much the star that night, the camera was always on him, even if he did not pull through to the Oscars for his second acting win. A pretty unknown French guy took care of that, otherwise no way Clooney would have lost. He also had a second film in the running that night, the one starring Ryan Gosling. Lifetime Achievement Award went to Morgan Freeman and despite him also being mentioned in the #metoo campaign, I am happy for him. He is so likable. I want to watch March of the Penguins now. Anyway, back to this awards ceremony: I think Kelsey Grammar's win was a bit surprising, even if he is a crowd pleaser, same for winning an Emmy for playing himself. Laura Dern I don't care too much about, I prefer her father. Kate Winslet I am also not too big anymore as I once was. Admittedly her win here is more deserving than the one for the Steve Jobs film later on. But maybe my most favorite win of the night is Idris Elba. He is truly amazing no denying. And Luther is just always edge-of-seat material. Really nooking forward to the new(est) episodes. So nice to see him recognized. That's the one British detective show that is actually amazing compared to the truly overrated Sherlock and its limited lead actor (and supporting actor. Speaking of overrated British shows, Downtown Abbey also won a big award. And Dinklage as well. I kinda like him, but I nevercared too much about Game of Thrones, which just ended and has been unlike many other shows a big awards player and permanent contender throughout its complete existence. Jessica Lange I don't mind, even if I would not say I am a fan, but at least she kept Maggie Smith from winning who probably cared about as much as Woody Allen. Pay attention to Guy Pearce playing a character on Mildred Pierce. As for the non-awards moments, nothing too memorable there. Seth Rogen has a boner standing to errrm Kate Beckinsale? Why was she even presenting? A surprise little singing presentation was also among the more memorable moments of the night, not really because it was that good, but just different. Or Leonardo DiCaprio, who looked strangely out of place and as if he wanted to be everywhere except where he actually was when the camera caught him, even if he was a nominee for J. Edgar. Sadly, this was enough already to stay in the mind from this awards show of over 7 years ago, probably much more depending on when you read this review. I give it a thumbs-up overall, but even I as an awards shows lover cannot say this was high-quality entertainment. A positive recommendation, but a cautious one. You should maybe only watch if you like several of the winning performers and projects just like I do.
