As much as people might like to view western countries as being more accepting and liberal, the fact is, there is still a very conservative attitude that pervades society when it comes to sexual activity. It's not surprising that anyone whose interests fall outside of a very strictly heteronormative lifestyle, as it were, would seek out safe spaces where they and their fellow adults can engage in consensual sex acts without judgement or fear. Of course, safety is never gauranteed, and Nate Dushku's feature directorial debut Birder looks at a predator who finds just such a safe space, and turns the trust of its inhabitants to his advantage. A film that expresses both the naturalism of a more open sexual identity and the danger that...

Birder
A serial killer enters the supposedly safe space of a queer nudist campsite in Nate Dushku’s first fictional work as a director, Birder. Screened at Atlanta's Out on Film, the Seattle Queer Film Festival and DC's Reel Affirmations, it’s a film which explores a culture rarely seen in cinema outside pornography. Though it does feature sex, this is no more explicit that in the average present day erotic thriller. The focus is on a different sort of thrill – or chill – as the stranger works his way through a population ill-equipped to defend itself, breaking the spirit but never the letter of the various agreements he makes as he persuades his victims to consent without a full understanding of his intentions.
When Nate and I discussed the film last month, I told him that, to me, it seemed that one of the film’s biggest concerns was the ease with.

"Expectations are generally not good for your health." Can Tuna Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie film called Birder, marking the feature directorial debut of actor / filmmaker Nate Dushku. This first premiered at the 2023 OutSouth Queer Film Festival in North Carolina recently, and it's also playing at Out on Film, Seattle Queer Film Festival, and the San Antonio Q Fest. A bird watcher, Kristian Brooks invades a nude queer campground on a remote lake in New Hampshire. He wears whatever cover he needs to ensnare the locals in his dark fetish in this nightmarish erotic thriller. "Consent has never been more deadly," is the tagline. This guy is creepy! Michael Emery stars as Kristian, who manipulates the "others to serve his dark fetish while blurring the line between protagonist and antagonist." The film also stars David J. Cork, Cody Sloan, Jes Davis, Uki Pavlovic, Ryan Czerwonko, and Miles Crawford.
