Flx (“Quicksand”), the Nordic banner owned by Sf Studios, is set to adapt the bestseller “Shadowland” (“Skuggland”) into a thriller series revolving around bullying.
The show will take place at an exclusive private school in Stockholm and will follow 11-year-old Daniel, who isn’t from a rich family unlike his classmates and is constantly bullied. After a serious incident, the school can no longer turn a blind eye to the harassment. In search for vindication, Daniel’s mother, Vicki, soon sees that even the truth comes with a price. The founder of the school, a billionaire called Gunnar Grentz, rules in the background. But this incident now threatens his position.
”Marcus Dunberg has written a fantastic novel that feels truly relevant and contemporary, especially given the explosion of ultra-high-net-worth individuals Sweden has seen in recent years and the consequences of that development,” said Pontus Edgren, managing partner of Flx.

The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling predictions.).
As a result of being well-received at these screenings, titles that had not been part of the conversation in the first few months of awards season end up as nominees. For example, the Swedish films “A Man Called Ove...

Sweden’s Svt Orders ‘Whiskey On The Rocks’ From Skyverse Nordic
Sweden’s public service broadcaster Svt has boarded Skyverse Nordic comedy-drama Whiskey On The Rocks as its main commissioning broadcaster. The six-part series is still at script and production development stage and is being billed as a “premium, epic Cold War dramedy special event” directed by Björn Stein (Midnight Sun) and based on an original story from author Jonas Jonasson. It is among the first shows from Skyverse Nordic, which is a subsidiary of Sparkling, the Stockholm-based sister company to Humanoids that Deadline revealed back in May. The show reunites Jonasson with Skyverse boss Patrick Nebout and creative producer Henrik Jansson-Schweizer, who were collectively behind Sweden’s biggest export success, the Oscar-nominated The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. A Scandinavian and international cast are being sought to play the drama’s protagonists onboard the submarine and in Moscow.

Stockholm-based production company Dramacorp is developing Cold War mini-series “Whiskey On The Rocks,” based on a real-life diplomatic incident.
In 1981, a Soviet U-137 ‘Whiskey’-class submarine ran aground on rocks deep inside Swedish territorial waters — in the middle of a sensitive Swedish naval exercise. This breach of sovereignty led to a Cold War stand-off between Sweden and the U.S.S.R. that took 11 days of high-stakes negotiation to resolve.
Dramacorp is currently recruiting the creative team and finalizing a co-production model for the mini-series. A Scandinavian and international cast will play the drama’s protagonists onboard the submarine, in Moscow, Stockholm, and at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Dramacorp’s chief content officer Patrick Nebout and creative director Henrik Jansson-Schweizer will executive produce. Their credits include Svt Sweden’s family saga “Thicker Than Water,” Swedish-French thriller “Midnight Sun,” and the Oscar-nominated Swedish film “The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared.

Lille, France — Beta Film subsidiary Good Friends Filmproduktion, whose groundbreaking TNT Comedy original “Arthur’s Law” plays Saturday at Series Mania, has acquired the German remake rights to hit Swedish format “Bonus Family.”
Good Friends is in final negotiations for a German broadcaster to take the reversion.
“Bonus Family” was produced by Flx, whose credits include “The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window And Disappeared” and its sequel, “The 101-Year Old Man Who Skipped Out on the Bill and Disappeared.”
It was created by these movies’ director, Felix Herngren, and his second wife, Clara Herngren – appropriately enough, given “Bonus Family” turns on people initiating relationships with new partners who already have children.
Netflix acquired the series’ first two seasons, presented outside Sweden, where the series played very well on pubcaster Svt, as a Netflix original outside Sweden, its first totally Swedish show.

Will Ferrell is set to star in and produce a new comedy for CBS Films called The 100 Year-Old Man. The movie is based on the book written by Jonas Jonasson called The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared.
According to Variety, Ferrell will play a man named Allan "who escapes from a nursing home on his 100th birthday. His time on the run reveals that he took part in several defining events of the 20th century."
That sounds absolutely fantastic! This is going to be a great role for Ferrell to play! When talking about the actor playing this character, the author of the book said:
“My character, Allan, knows the art of being funny just by being. That is something Will Ferrell masters to perfection. Great humor with small measurements. I am happy that Allan is now in his hands.”

The Oscar race in the best makeup and hairstyling category is heating up — and there’s one potential nominee that deserves a little more attention than the others: A Man Called Ove, the Swedish submission for best foreign language film. This work has some major competition, for sure, but is poised to make history as its quite rare for non-English films to receive this honor.
A Man Called Ove — a film based on Fredrik Backman’s 2012 book of the same name that was written and directed by Hannes Holm — is a surprising contender up against superhero and sci-fi films like Deadpool, Star Trek Beyond, and Suicide Squad as well as your typical comedy-dramas such as The Dressmaker, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Hail, Caesar! now that the Academy has announced their shortlist for the category. The winners of the 88th Annual Academy Awards have been announced, the biggest award Best Picture went to 'Spotlight.' 'The Revenant' took home the Best Director Oscar for Alejandro González Iñárritu, making Iñárritu the third director in history to win back-to-back directing and Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his Oscar for Best Actor (and there was much rejoicing).
Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki also won his third Best Cinematography Oscar in a row for 'The Revenant.' 'Mad Max: Fury Road' was the big winner of the night for most awards, sweeping the technical categories to earn six Oscars, including Best Production Design.
It was a great year for Irish talent picking up nominations but only Stutterer, which was directed by Irishman Benjamin Cleary managed to pick up a award in Best Short Film (Live Action). The short can be viewed on the Rte player here.

First of all, I'm very happy that my favorite film of the year, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," wins big at the 88th Academy Awards! I was losing hope after "The Big Short" won the Producers Guild Award and "The Revenant" zoomed onto the frontrunner status!
But no. At the night of the Oscars, "Spotlight" won two major awards including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay!
Kudos to McCarthy and team!
My heart felt "Spotlight" would win but my mind said "The Revenant." See? The heart always wins!
Now, onto the show itself. I thought Chris Rock did a good job in softening the #OscarsSoWhite controversy! But the show itself? A bit of a bore. It felt long! Not quite the 4 hours and 23 minutes of the 74th Oscars but long nonetheless.
And really? Only Sam Smith, The Weeknd, and Lady Gaga were invited to perform the Best Original Song nominees? What...

Clearly the underdogs, going up against both "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "The Revenant," makeup designers Love Larson and Eva von Bahr nonetheless brilliantly transformed Swedish star Robert Gustafsson into a believable centenarian with little time and resources. "We wanted the audience to buy that he's 100-years-old without constantly thinking that it's Robert in really heavy makeup," von Bahr offered. "That was a major challenge for us. It's the same thing if you would've done that in America with a really famous actor." In "The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared," Gustafsson runs away from his retirement home just before his birthday celebration, and continues a lifelong series of adventures with famous historical figures, from Joseph Stalin to Ronald Reagan. Fortunately, all of the flashbacks were done first in Budapest, so the makeup was applied in stages and they shot full makeup in...

Love Larson and Eva Von Bahr, the makeup artists behind “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared,” readily admitted during our recent webcam chat (watch above) to being shocked by being recognized by the academy. “We thought that we wouldn’t get nominated,” divulges Larson, “because the films we were competing against were such huge studio films.” -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions This Swedish comedy about a centenarian who escapes from a nursing home joined heavy-hitters “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “The Revenant” as one of the three Oscar nominees in the makeup and hairstyling category. Nominations for the 88th Academy Awards were announced on Thursday morning, and The Revenant dominated the field, earning nods in 12 different categories, including Best Picture. In recent weeks, Alejandro González Iñárritu's epic saga of frontier revenge has seemed like one of the only sure things in an otherwise unusually unpredictable field, but the sheer number of nominations it received was one of the biggest surprises of a morning that was filled with them.

It’s difficult to even care much about this announcement when mourning the loss of a film icon, but alas, the 2016 Oscar nominations have been unveiled this morning. Ahead of a ceremony on February 28th, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Guillermo del Toro, John Krasinski, and Ang Lee were on hand to announce the 88th Oscars nominations.
Leading the pack is The Revenant, which picked up 12 nominations, while Mad Max: Fury Road was close behind with 10. The Martian had 7, while Carol, Bridge of Spies and Spotlight each picked up 6, but sadly, Todd Haynes‘ magnificent drama was left out of the Best Picture and Best Director race. After many months of speculation, the full list of this year's Oscar nominees have been announced - just minutes after the reveal of the death of beloved thespian Alan Rickman.
"The Revenant" led the field with twelve nominations followed by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with ten and "The Martian" with seven. Next were "Spotlight" and "Carol" with six nominations; "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Big Short" and "Bridge Of Spies" got five; "Room" and "The Danish Girl" nabbed four; "Sicario," "Brooklyn" and "The Hateful Eight" scored three; and "Steve Jobs" and "Ex Machina" nabbed two.
Surprises? "Creed" and "Joy" scored only one nomination each for Stallone's and Lawrence's performances respectively. No Ridley Scott for director, Quentin Tarantino or Aaron Sorkin for screenplay, Charlize Theron for best actress, "Carol" for best picture, "See You Again" for best song, and of course - the distinct lack of racial diversity. Here's the list in full.

The 100-year-old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared is the sort of movie that’s difficult to write about. It leaves so little impression that there’s just not much to say. It’s a thoroughly middle of the road movie, with any outright flaws offset by the technical competence of the production. That it is now one of, if not the highest grossing films in its native country is a little perplexing, as it reminds me of one of those movies that someone mentions ten years later and you respond with “ohhhh yeah, I kinda remember that!” Like “Second-Hand Lions.”
“Second-Hand Lions” is actually the movie this reminded me of the most, with the elderly misadventures and things actually happening in the present-day plot. They were obviously going for a “Forrest Gump” feel, and there are definite traces of that as well, but fell far short.

Morbid and droll in the manner of several other recent Scandinavian exports, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared rarely manages to also be funny. Allan Karlsson, the centenarian in question, is played by 49-year-old Robert Gustafsson. Old age has made his character no less of a hellion; Felix Herngren's adaptation of the bestselling Jonas Jonasson novel begins with our hero being shipped off to a nursing home after TNT'ing the fox that killed his beloved cat Molotov, whom he proudly proclaims meant more to him than anyone else in his life. Allan liberates himself from his geriatric confines shortly thereafter, happening upon a briefcase stuffed with cash at a bus station and gaining a much younger enemy in the process. As he go...

Rarely has a film’s title been so bold, so bald, so straightforward, so lacking in pretense, pretension, or bullshit as that of The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. To escape the dreadfully cheery imminent celebration of his 100th birthday, Allan Karlsson (Robert Gustafsson, who is actually only half that age) climbs out the window of the retirement home he was sentenced to after an unfortunate mishap with dynamite, and disappears. Not to our eyes, of course, only to those of the horrible busybodies in the home who want to limit his fun. Allan really likes blowing things up,...

★★★☆☆It was perhaps inevitable that Swedish author Jonas Jonasson's popular 2009 novel, The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, would make it to the big screen. Swedish comedian and actor Robert Gustafsson plays the titular role of Allan Karlsson, once an explosives expert/obsessive with a penchant for vodka, now a dithering old gentleman who escapes from his care home as celebrations are being organised for his centenary.
