Italy’s Leone Film Group is taking the legacy of its founder, spaghetti Western master Sergio Leone, to the next level.
As the Rome-based company run by the maestro’s children, Raffaella and Andrea, celebrates its 35th anniversary, it continues to consolidate its standing as the preeminent supplier of U.S. indie product to Italy. The Leone’s film and TV production side has been recently growing with a robust slate of high-end content for the international market.
Having become the top distribution partner in Italy for U.S. indies such as Lionsgate, STX Entertainment, Voltage and Black Bear, the Leone Film Group is now focused on what Raffaella Leone calls the “more difficult task” of “laying the groundwork for our production side in the international arena.”

Inside Out 2 continues dominating the box office in its second weekend, with Deadline reporting that the movie is looking at a $98 million weekend – some say it could even break $100 million. This would make it the highest grossing second weekend for an animated film of all time, after The Super Mario Bros Movie’s $92 million second weekend last year. Certainly, the animated sequel is shaping up to be one of Pixar’s biggest hits ever, which is quite the coup for a studio that everyone thought was on the downslide just a few months ago after a series of underperformers like Lightyear, Elemental, and more.
Meanwhile, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is holding on to second place with an $18 million-plus third weekend. The movie is turning out to be a major moneymaker for Sony, with it looking to end as the second-highest-grossing Bad Boys movie of all time, just below...

Barbie may have rescued the box office in 2023, but she could not tip the balance for representation of women in films.
Even as state legislatures consider restricting or eliminating Dei initiatives at public institutions, the percentage of women, women of color and women 45+ in films released in North America in 2023 plummeted to lows not seen in almost a decade. That’s according to the results of a study released this morning by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. In fact, those percentages are the worst since 2014, despite Barbie.
“It is a difficult lesson but one that must be restated: One film does not represent progress across the industry and cannot bear the burden of lifting the industry to inclusion,” wrote the study’s authors Katherine L. Neff, Dr. Stacy L. Smith & Dr. Katherine Pieper.
USC Annenberg analyzed “the gender identity, racial/ethnicity, and age of leads/co leads across the 100 top-grossing...

Although Barbie won the box office last year, a demographic analysis of the rest of 2023’s releases indicates that Hollywood is still investing primarily in male-centered movies.
Just 30 percent of the top 100 films of 2023 featured a female lead or co-lead, the lowest share in a decade, according to the latest research brief from USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. AI2 has compiled this data annually since 2007 (which, at 20 percent, featured the lowest-ever percentage of women protagonists), and last year’s mark is a substantial drop from 2022’s record-high of 44 percent.
“This is a catastrophic step back for girls and women in film,” AI2 founder Stacy L. Smith said in a statement. “These numbers are more than just a metric of how often girls and women are in protagonist roles. They represent the career opportunities offered to women in the industry…. Even by looking at the films that were moved to 2024 because of the strike,...

Ninety-four songs and 149 scores have been deemed eligible in the music categories for the 96th annual Academy Awards, Variety has learned.
Voting began Thursday, with 390 members of the Academy music branch eligible to vote in this year’s competition. And for the first time in years, there appear to be no surprises or glaring omissions.
Any film can submit up to three songs, and the “Barbie” entries were as expected: Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made for,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and the Mark Ronson-Andrew Wyatt song “I’m Just Ken.”
Five other films submitted the maximum of three songs, including two from Disney: the live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with “For the First Time,” “The Scuttlebutt” and “Wild Uncharted Waters,” all by Alan Menken (who won Oscars for the original in 1989) and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and “Wish,” the Julia Michaels-Benjamin Rice tunes including “I’m a Star,...

To me, there is very little as frustrating as returning to a streaming service ready to pick up where you left off in a movie or episode of TV only to find out that the platform in question is not giving you the option to resume where you last were. When things are working properly, the streamer allows you to jump right back into your title with minimal hoops to jump through, but when it somehow forgets where you last were, it can be incredibly frustrating to remember what episode you were on and then to fast-forward to a spot that looks like it might be roughly around the same scene you last remember seeing. Recently, Peacock has taken much of the guessing — and clicking — out of starting up your streaming experience by introducing a new feature that allows you to get back into your show or movie straight from the home screen.

Diane Warren lined up an all-star girl group including Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper and Gloria Estefan to sing “Gonna Be You,” from the film 80 for Brady.
“I love great artists,” Warren said Thursday at Deadline’s Sound and Screen Film event. “I love iconic artists.”
Warren had written songs for Estefan and Carlisle before. Parton was a first.
“She doesn’t need me,” Warren said of the country legend.

By the time "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" hit theaters this year, a whole lot had happened between the popular franchise's second installment and its third. On screen, Nick (Louis Mandylor) got separated, Maria (Lainie Kazan) developed dementia, and Ian (John Corbett) retired. Offscreen, Andrea Martin gained new stardom playing demon-hunting nun Sister Andrea in the Paramount+ series "Evil," while the cast also lost one co-star -- Michael Constantine, who passed away in 2021.
The new movie's plot hinges around the aftermath of patriarch Gus' (Constantine) death, as Toula (Nia Vardalos) explains in the film's trailer that it was Gus' last wish that the family visit his childhood village in Greece. “Barbie” (Warner Bros.), the year’s biggest hit, had some competition its third week out on PVOD (for rent at $24.99), and it’s coming from within its own house.
“Blue Beetle,” from Warners’ DC Comics division, actually took #1 at Vudu — even more impressive since it ranks by revenue, putting the $19.99 “Beetle” at a disadvantage. It placed #3 at Google Play, which often is slower to note new releases. “Barbie” remains #1 at iTunes and Google Play.
Three other new titles debuted this week, led by “Gran Turismo” (Sony), as high as #2 at Vudu. Also at $19.99, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” (Focus) also placed on two charts. It’s #4 at Vudu after its third weekend in theaters.
“Muzzle” (Rlj), a direct-to-home release landed at #6 at iTunes at a $6.99 rental. Taking the “John Wick” plot about a man seeking revenge after his dog is killed, this stars Stephen Lang and Aaron Eckhardt.

After finishing atop the box-office weekend for the last three weeks, The Nun II failed to stave off the onslaught of new releases over the weekend, and seceded the number one spot to new release Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie by a margin of $5.9 million.
Debuting in first place, with $23.0 million to show for its opening weekend, was the Paramount Pictures release Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie. Second place was claimed by fellow newcomer Saw X with $18.0 million brought in by the latest Lionsgate offering. Director Gareth Edwards’ new film, The Creator debuted in third place with $14.0 million earned for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. U.S. actor Elena Kampouris (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3”) is set to star in the Sicily-set “Here Now,” a romantic thriller marking Italian director Gabriele Muccino’s return to English-language filmmaking. Muccino’s Hollywood credits include the Will Smith-starrer “The Pursuit of Happyness.”
Kampouris’ recent efforts comprise Netflix series “Jupiter’s Legacy” and the 2020 remake of “Children of the Corn.” In “Here Now” she plays Sophie, a young Californian who is traveling in Italy with her sister. “No one is really creating original sci-fi blockbusters anymore, it’s an endangered species.”
Such was the wise insight from Gareth Edwards at the special screening of his latest movie The Creator last week. This from a filmmaker who has run the gamut from the half-million-budgeted 2010 indie Monsters to the $265 million-budgeted, billion-dollar-plus grossing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which despite any headlines about reshoots with Tony Gilroy truly had Edwards’ fingerprints on it down to its The Day After end-of-the-world finale.
In a weekend crowded with two other wide releases — Paramount/Spin Master’s Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie and Lionsgate’s Saw X — and movies’ profiles significantly dimmed by the lack of actors’ promotions during the SAG-AFTRA strike, the $80 million New Regency-financed The Creator né True Love is hoping to break through. For a third consecutive week, The Nun II maintained its position on top of the box-office weekend, albeit by the extremely slim lead of only $0.1 million.
Although The Nun II again experienced a decline in revenue – it made $6.3 million less than last weekend – it still managed to hold onto the number one slot of the top ten with $8.4 million, giving the Warner Bros. film a total of $69.2 million to date. Debuting in second place, Expend4ables made $8.3 million for Lionsgate, finishing just behind The Nun II. Falling a spot to third this weekend was A Haunting in Venice, which added $6.3 million over the weekend for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, giving the film a two-week tally of $25.4 million. Also dropping a spot this weekend was The Equalizer 3, which brought in $4.7 million for Columbia Pictures in its fourth weekend of release, giving it an overall total of $81.3 million. In its second straight week with a photo finish victory, The Nun II seems to have taken down the Expend4bles with an estimated $8.4 million, representing a 42% decline from last week. Despite this being the lowest grossing weekend of the year, this is great news for the Conjuring spin-off film as remaining atop the charts for three weeks in a row is a rare feat in a front loaded marketplace. With another month and change to go before Halloween, more people will be in the mood for a spooky time in theaters which should help this one remain steady at the box office. Of course in the coming weeks it will have some competition such as Saw X, The Exorcist: Believer and Five Nights at Freddie’s.

It was another weekend where two movies went head-to-head for the #1 spot at the box office, but it also was one of the worst showings this year. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Lionsgate gave the Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone ensemble action franchise another chance with “Expend4bles,” but after receiving terrible reviews with a 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, it struggled against the horror sequel “The Nun 2.”
Things are way too close to call, but as of now, Warner Bros. says that its franchise offering, “The Nun II,” has won the weekend with $8.4 million, down 42% in its third weekend. It has grossed $69.2 million in its first three weekends, still well below the showing for the previous “Nun” movie in 2018.

Millennium Media and Lionsgate’s Expendables 4 was the only new wide release on last night seeing $750K in previews.
The Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham fourthquel is only expected to make between $15M-$17M. If the movie bests the opening weekend of 2014’s The Expendables 3 ($15.8M), then Lionsgate will be happy. The fourth movie is playing at 3,518 locations including 900 PLF screens comprised of Xd, RPX, Dolby, 4DX and D-box . Lionsgate has UK in addition to U.S. on the Scott Waugh directed action movie.
That figure is under the preview take of Expendables 3 which did $875K off showtimes that began at 8Pm. Ouch. The Expendables was able to secure a solid $34.8 million opening on its way to a $103 million domestic finish while its international numbers were even better, adding another $171.4 million for a worldwide take of $274.4 million. Just two years later we were treated to the follow up, aptly titled The Expendables 2, which was able to secure a $28.5 million debut with an $85 million domestic total. Yet again international audiences proved their love for the series by adding another $229.9 million to the films tally giving it a solid $314.9 million worldwide take.

In its second week of release, the horror film sequel The Nun II held onto the top spot of the box-office weekend by the narrow margin of $0.2 million.
Although it brought in around $17.9 million less than last weekend, The Nun II still finished in first place of the top ten with $14.7 million. This gives the film an overall total of $56.5 million for Warner Bros. With a debut in second place earning $14.5 million, A Haunting in Venice came close to claiming the top spot for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, but was just a bit short. Meanwhile, after landing in second place last weekend, The Equalizer 3 was pushed to third place where it added $7.2 million to give the Columbia Pictures release a three-week total of $73.7 million. Also dropping a spot was My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 which landed in fourth place with $4.7 million in its second week of release.

Only Super Bowl weekend had a lower total gross in 2023, with around $63 million for this weekend. But even on a weekend when no film grossed over $15 million, it matters to studios who gets the bragging rights that come with taking the top spot.
Warner Bros. sent its estimate of $14.7 million for the second weekend of “The Nun II.” Disney had just before claimed $14.5 million for “A Haunting in Venice,” the latest Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot Agatha Christie film.
This includes guesses for Sunday. The general consensus among rivals is that both figures are too high, but “The Nun II” is better positioned to prevail in a race that might even be closer than it seems. But we really won’t know until Sunday’s actual results are known.

Warner Bros. sent its estimate of $14.7 million for the second weekend of “The Nun II.” Disney had just before claimed $14.5 million for “A Haunting in Venice,” the latest Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot Agatha Christie film.

Kenneth Branagh returned both behind and in front of the camera as Inspector Hercule Poirot for “A Haunting in Venice,” the third threequel of September, which only did slightly better than its predecessor. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Despite “Venice” receiving better reviews than the previous two installments with 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, it still got caught up in a horse race for first place as Warner Bros. claimed victory with its own horror sequel, “The Nun II,” over Branagh’s third adaptation of an Agatha Christie murder mystery. Warners is estimating that “The Nun II” made $14.7 million this weekend, down 55% from its opening weekend, but if that number holds, it will indeed score a second weekend at #1. It has grossed $56.5 million in its first two weekends, just a little bit more than the original “The Nun” opened with in 2018.

It was a hard fought battle, but it appears The Nun II has won her fight against the famed detective Hercule Poirot with an estimated $14.7 million which represents a 55% slide from its opening weekend. With a running domestic total of $56.5 million and a worldwide total of nearly $160 million, I think it is safe to say that this $38.5 million budgeted continuation of The Conjuring Universe is a success.
Kenneth Branagh’s third go round as the mustachioed sleuth in A Haunting in Venice sadly could not hit the number one spot the way the previous film did, however it did come in higher than Nile with a reported $14.5 million opening against that films $12.8 million. Of course that film had a troubled road to get to the big screen, such as a global pandemic that people were still weary of and a lead star that people were also a bit weary of.

Updated: After a close box office race, “The Nun II” managed to claim victory over newcomer “A Haunting in Venice.”
The two films were competing for No. 1 over the weekend, but the Warner Bros. thriller “The Nun II” ever-so-slightly outpaced the competition with $14.5 million in its second weekend as Disney’s murder mystery “A Haunting in Venice” inched closely behind with a middling $14.3 million debut.
Regardless of which film finished in first place, this was a downright dreary weekend at the box office. Overall ticket sales topped out at just $62 million, according to Comscore, resulting in the second-worst weekend of the year. “Nothing says ‘normal’ like a post-summer slowdown at the box office, and this year is no exception,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
“A Haunting in Venice,” the third of director Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptations, collected another $22.7 million at the international box office, bringing its global tally to $37.2 million.

The box office is seeing its tightest race for No. 1 this year between Disney/20th Century’s “A Haunting in Venice” and Warner Bros./New Line’s “The Nun II,” but it is also seeing the lowest overall weekend grosses since this year’s Super Bowl weekend.
Industry estimates have the overall totals sliding down to approximately $64.5 million, and ongoing weekend numbers are expected to remain in that territory until the release of Taylor Swift’s concert film next month. The good news is that this low figure is still better than last year’s terrible September, with a year-over-year rise of 23%.
We won’t know until final totals come in on Monday who is officially No. 1, but for now, estimates are giving the edge to “The Nun II” with $14.7 million in its second weekend. That gives the “Conjuring” horror film a 10-day total of $56 million.

Just a quick update for you today as numbers have begun rolling in for this third weekend of September (this is one of those rare five weekend months). Everything seems to be falling perfectly in line with our predictions from Thursday with the most recent Hercule Poirot mystery, A Haunting In Venice looking at a first place finish with a projected 3-day take of $14 million. That number is based off Venice’s $1.2 million in Thursday previews and a $5.3 million Friday (as of this writing).
That number puts it slightly ahead of 2020’s pandemic ridden debut of Death on the Nile that netted a $12.8 million opening. Yet it is a ways away from the original 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express’s opening of $28.6 million. It seems these sequels are as cursed as some of the characters in them as they seem to always be released with some baggage that affects its performance.

Box Office: ‘A Haunting in Venice’ Gondolas to $5.5 Million Opening Day, ‘Nun II’ Contends for No. 1
Hercule Poirot is back on the case this weekend, with Kenneth Branagh’s “A Haunting in Venice” hoping to best a very quiet box office in its opening. The horror-tinged whodunnit scored $5.5 million from 3,305 theaters on its opening day, a figure that includes $1.2 million in Thursday previews. The film gets a boost from increased ticket prices for premium large formats like Imax.
“Haunting” is pacing a bit ahead of last year’s “Death on the Nile,” which opened to $12.8 million on Super Bowl weekend after some prolonged shuffles around Disney and 20th Century Studios’ schedule due to the Covid pandemic. “A Haunting in Venice,” the third Agatha Christie adaptation from Branagh, arrives with less of a financial burden — the production budget of $60 million is a notable drop from its predecessor’s $90 million. There’s a less starry cast, a more intimate setting and Branagh went digital for this one after...

It's a weekend of sequels at the box-office with "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" and "The Nun 2." Which one is my pick of the week? "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" Nia Vardalos tries to recapture the magic of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” but is part 3 good? You might be surprised!

It appears we are in that period at the box office where the big summer movie season has come and gone, and the big films that will fill out the remainder of the year are still on the horizon. It is generally mid-September when there is a bit of a lull. Last year, Tristar Pictures trotted out their Viola Davis starring The Woman King, which was able to grab a solid $25.1 million debut, while the quite excellent horror film Barbarian saw a solid second-weekend decline of just 38.3%.
This year, 20th Century Studios will try their hand at a new type of scare with the Kenneth Branagh adaptation A Haunting in Venice, the third film in his Hercule Poirot franchise that dates back to 2017’s star-studded Murder on the Orient Express. That film had some genuine heat behind it and would garner a respectable $28.6 million opening on its way to a...
