Director Adam Wingard is said to be getting back to his roots with the upcoming action-thriller Onslaught, and THR reports this week that Adria Arjona (Hit Man) is in talks to star.
The actress is in “final negotiations” to both star in the film and executive produce.
A24 has picked up the package, with Wingard directing and frequent creative partner Simon Barrett writing. The duo made a name for themselves with The Guest and You’re Next.
THR details, “Many details for Onslaught are being kept in an underground experimental facility, but sources describe it as a gonzo action horror thriller. The scope is said to more in line with Wingard’s earlier movies, which were all original creations, before he went off and made the big-budget spectacle hits Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong.”

Since 2012, the V/H/S franchise has been consistently delivering smart, scary thrills and developing a growing following among horror fans.
Normally, after 12 years and six movies, excitement for the next sequel begins to run dry.
But the anthology format enables the V/H/S folks to keep things freshly frightening year after year.
(Shudder)
Thus, anticipation for V/H/S/Beyond is through the roof a full three weeks before the film’s premiere on Shudder.
And we now have a poster and teaser to further whet your appetite as spooky season kicks into high gear.
The trailer doesn’t give much away plot-wise.
We have the same lo-fi, found footage aesthetic as the previous V/H/S flicks, but it looks like this one will be taking us in more of a sci-fi direction.
Fans of Event Horizon and the Alien films, rejoice!
In keeping with tradition, Beyond will feature a slate of shorts directed by some...

The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium.
VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). With the advent of VHS, movies were on-demand for the first time. One could rent their movies from a local video store and watch them at their leisure. Dive into a sci-fi nightmare with six chilling tapes that push the limits of fear.

As someone who hasn't been shy about sharing my undying love for the 2008 zombie horror comedy Dance of the Dead over the years, (I even had the pleasure of helping host 10th anniversary screenings for the film back in 2018), I'm always stoked to see what director Gregg Bishop is working on, so I'm especially thrilled and chilled that Bishop's new short film, Howl at the Dead, will have its Canadian premiere tonight at the Fantasia International Film Festival!

Kate Siegel has faced plenty of threats – supernatural and otherwise – in her collaborations with husband Mike Flanagan, which include Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Now Deadline reports that she’s set to face the biggest bad of all, as she’ll be taking on the devil himself in the dark comedy Damned If You Do!

Be kind, rewind: the "V/H/S" franchise will return this Halloween season, with a new line-up of talent bringing six new segments to the screen. This latest film, titled "V/H/S/Beyond," will change things up a little bit by bringing sci-fi into the horror mix. Per Variety, the film "will feature six new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape." If that wasn't enough to get you excited, maybe the folks involved will be. Perhaps most prominent among the list of names involved with this new entry is Mike Flanagan, the modern horror master whose credits include "The Haunting of Hill House," "Doctor Sleep," "Oculus," and the most recent "The Fall of the House of Usher." Flanagan isn't directing, though — instead, he wrote a segment that will be helmed by his wife Kate Siegel, who has appeared in the majority of Flanagan's films and TV shows.

This article contains massive spoilers for "MaXXXine."
If you want to know the real history of Hollywood in all of its dreamlike, terrible, grimy beauty, you would do well to study the horror film. It's the genre where many pillars of the film industry get their start and one that comments on the darkest aspects of human nature and filmmaking itself without fear of overstepping. Think of Wes Craven's "Scream" quartet: not only do all four films make blatant comments on the contemporary state of the industry, but "Scream 3" even features a character who, in hindsight, is a thinly-veiled version of serial assaulter Harvey Weinstein, an executive producer on the film. The calls were coming from inside the house.
Being a horror movie fan involves not just things like separations of art from the artist, but varying gradations of morality, with so many ethical questions constantly at the forefront of these films.

In October 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkitsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later, their footage was found.
That brief but iconic introductory text and the narrative that followed would captivate millions for decades. When “The Blair Witch Project” hit theaters in summer 1999, moviegoers were enthralled by the ill-fated fictional journey of three would-be documentarians — Heather Donahue (Rei Hance), Josh Leonard (Joshua Leonard), and Mike Williams (Michael Williams) — hunting down the truth behind a local Maryland myth. It was shocking; the analog realism of the then-obscure found footage genre instilled in viewers the sense that what they were witnessing was the last record of a real tragedy. The illusion was made even more palpable thanks to a marketing campaign that embraced the early internet with a rudimentary website, missing persons posters of the characters, and a TV mockumentary companion, “Curse of the Blair Witch,” that preceded the film’s release.

More Godzilla and King Kong are coming to Max. “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” will be available to stream from home on Max starting July 4. The film was a box office hit earlier this year with $196 million at the domestic box office and $567 million worldwide.
Following the events of 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the new film finds the two iconic monsters putting aside their differences and living peacefully — with King Kong residing in the Hollow Earth alone and Godzilla fighting destructive monsters and napping in Rome’s Colosseum. However, that balance is disrupted when Kong, longing for fellow gigantic friends, discovers a violent clan of massive apes hiding out in Hollow Earth. Led by the ruthless Scar King, the apes attack Earth, and the only creatures who can stop them are Godzilla and Kong.

It looks like Snake Plissken will be trapped in New York a bit longer: a planned reboot of the John Carpenter classic "Escape From New York" has lost its directors again, according to ComicBook.com. "Scream" legacy sequel directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who are better known as Radio Silence (the name of their production group), were attached to the project as of 2022, but say they're no longer officially on board.
"We are not [developing it], unfortunately," Gillett told the outlet in a new interview, explaining, "I think titles like that bounce around for a while and I think they've tried to get that out of the blocks a few times. I think it's just ultimately a tricky rights issue thing." It sounds like it's not that Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin aren't interested in pursuing the project, but that they weren't able to make it within a set window of time before the...

The vampire horror sub-genre has become increasingly popular yet again. Of course, the main representative of the genre of the recent years is the new TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, based on Anne Rice's famous gothic horror novel, but today we will talk specifically about the movies.
Last year alone saw the release of two feature-length vampire horror films, Renfield by Chris McKay and The Last Voyage of the Demeter by André Øvredal. What they have in common are one aspect: an absolute failure in terms of critical and audience sympathy.
In this context, the new horror film Abigail is particularly noteworthy. Even though it is currently showing rather modest box office indicators, the new movie has already managed to get rave reviews. That's all thanks to how intelligently the script is constructed, with relevant and genuinely clever references and to the 20th century works that inspired it.

The Universal horror movie “Abigail” began as a modern-day twist on “Dracula’s Daughter,” but making a film about the legendary vampire’s blood-sucking scion wasn’t the reason why the filmmaking trio Radio Silence — producer Chad Villella and directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — wanted to make the project their follow-up to 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI.”
“As freeing as it is to challenge the format of what a ‘Scream’ movie is, you’re playing in a pretty specific sandbox,” Gillett says. “Coming out of ‘Scream VI,’ it was just really clear, like, what if we could take any risk that we felt creatively inspired to take and not have to worry about how it fits into the legacy of a predecessor?”
Instead, Radio Silence wanted to return to their roots in original horror, from 2012’s “V/H/S” to 2019’s “Ready or Not.” In “Abigail,” a team of mercenary thieves — played by Melissa Barrera,...

Most filmmakers would kill to have a track record like the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence. Breaking in with the anthology horror films "V/H/S" and "Southbound" as well as the found footage flick "Devil's Due," the crew skyrocketed to new heights with the crowd-pleasing horror-comedy favorite "Ready or Not," which more than proved they were capable of taking over the reins for "Scream V" and "Scream VI." Now, collective co-founders Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are back in their directors' chairs for an original horror story, unleashing the balls-to-the-wall "Abigail," aka "the ballerina vampire movie." The trailer alone had already firmly placed this on my most anticipated films list of 2024, but my deep love of "Ready or Not" meant my expectations were sky-high. And yet, somehow, those wild Radio Silence boys knocked this out of the park and into the stratosphere, crafting arguably their best film yet.

Justin Janowitz’s spellbinding feature debut, Do Not Watch, follows the tradition of cursed footage like 2018’s Antrum or 2022’s Incantation. Subliminal messages are baked into Ryan Toyama’s screenplay and imprinted onto the screen. Traditional barriers between screens and their audiences are shattered; characters plead with us to do what the title commends. Do Not Watch isn’t without shortcomings, but tantalizes as an innovative reinvention of found footage capabilities.
Toyama’s screenplay bounces between multiple timelines infected by the same film canister. An introductory info dump reads: “What you are about to witness is a compilation of the events surrounding the disappearance of a post-production crew as they worked on research footage from the 1980s.” Clips cycle around the mentioned post-production crew who works at Illusion Post, the supposed cursed footage of researchers in a bunker from the ‘80s, and the documentarians trying to unearth the truth about...

After exploring the 90s in the previous two entries, V/H/S/85, the sixth(!) entry in the V/H/S franchise, throws things back to the decade where VHS ruled the roost – once again using the found-footage format to tell a handful of spooky stories from directors David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
After a brief flick through 80s television, replete with a pause on an Unsolved Mysteries-style show called Total Copy, which tells the story of Rory a test subject at Stamer University, to open proceedings. A show that the film returns to throughout its running time before wrapping things up in traditional anthology fashion and revealing Rory’s connection to the shorts we’ve just watched.

A mediocre entry in the V/H/S series which will no doubt still be considered a must for some fans, V/H/S/94 is elevated quite a bit by the quantity and sometimes the quality of special features included in the package. These include a full length version of the VeggieMasher advert which is one of the film's highlights, plus a significant quantity of deleted material. Notably, there's enough of the final segment to have taken the story in a completely different direction. Although this is a bit crude, it's well acted and one can't help but feel that something was lost when it was, presumably, reshaped to fit in better with everything else.
A varied group always makes for a better commentary track, and frankly it's often more entertaining listening to people talk about this film than watching it. They clearly had a good time. Between this, the interview section and the ComicCon.

The V/H/S saga reached a high point in 2023 with V/H/S/85. This Nineties-set instalment, which features work from accomplished directors Jennifer Reeder and Chloe Okuno, was made two years earlier, but some fans will only be getting their hands on it now. Unfortunately, whilst it gets closer to the spirit of early entries in the series and may be seen by some fans as a welcome return to form, it’s unlikely to win over anybody new.
Whereas V/H/S/85 was firmly rooted in the relevant time period and engaged with the condition of the medium at that time, there’s relatively little here to tie it to ’94. Most of the trends it picks up on from that era still apply today, beyond the fact that apes themselves have largely disappeared, so it’s not clear why the title has been chosen. Rather than focusing on anything temporally relevant, the five stories comprising.

While the rebooted “Scream” franchise may be floundering, the writers and directors of the fifth and sixth “Scream” films are forging a new path thanks to a partnership with production company MRC.
Radio Silence directing team Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella, plus screenwriter James Vanderbilt’s Project X Entertainment banner (co-founded with William Sherak and Paul Neinstein), have announced a production and financing pact to make two to three genre films a year with MRC. Both Radio Silence and Vanderbilt had stepped away from the “Scream” franchise after the sixth installment and were not attached to the seventh film, which currently does not have a director after Christopher Landon exited following the cast shakeups.
The new collaboration will focus on horror and thriller films and encompass a range of up-and-coming and established writers and directors in the genre space. MRC is the studio most recently behind “Saltburn,” “American Fiction,...

I’ve been doing it since my first year as a big-boy film critic almost a decade ago, but it never gets easier. I’ve seen over 130+ horror movies in 2023! Ten slots aren’t enough to capture the massive breadth of worthwhile horror titles you should consume. I won’t do it, dammit. I can’t.
