This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in June, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a Japanese slasher, a dark tale about family, a Scandinavian haunting, a terrifying coming-out story, and an aquatic creature-feature.
The Attic (1980)
Directed by George Edwards and Gary Graver.
Fathers are usually depicted as unkind and cruel in horror, and the one in The Attic is no exception. Carrie Snodgress plays the dutiful Louise who has sacrificed her own happiness for far too long. When she tries to turn her life around and do something about her loneliness, which entails adopting a chimpanzee, her tyrannical father (Ray Milland) is quick to stomp out her ambitions.

Mitchell Lichtenstein's 2007 horror film "Teeth" has a notable premise. A young woman named Dawn (Jess Weixler) has just joined a Christian abstinence group and has elected to leave sex out of her life until she is able to be married. At about the same time, however, Dawn finds that she has a series of razor-sharp teeth in her vagina. This development terrifies her, but she also finds that it can fight back against the multiple men who attempt to assault her throughout the film. Several men will not exit the film wholly intact. "Teeth" is an excellent coming-of-age drama that confronts backward notions of sexual purity, angrily addresses the constant objectification of adolescent women, and is a wonderfully wicked tale of feminist vengeance. It was one of the best films of 2007.

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for Danish horror film “Speak No Evil,” which has its world premiere at Sundance. Sales are being handled by TrustNordisk.
The film follows a Danish family on vacation in Tuscany, where they befriend a Dutch family. Months later the Danish couple receive an invitation to visit the Dutch and decide to go for the weekend. However, it doesn’t take long before the joy of reunion is replaced by misunderstandings. Things gradually get out of hand, as the Dutch turn out to be something different than what they have pretended to be.
The film was directed by Christian Tafdrup, and written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup.
Christian Tafdrup describes “Speak No Evil” as a satirical horror movie. “Satirical, because it revolves around ordinary people’s absurdly recognizable ways of behaving. A horror movie, because the film is dark, evil and willingly foul.

I have a love/hate relationship with Bruce Willis these days. On the one hand he stars in films I love such as the Red, G.I. Joe and The Expendables; and on the other he appears in direct to market dross like The Prince, Set-Up and Vice. Now don’t get me wrong, some of the direct to DVD titles Willis has appeared in are pretty good, Fire With Fire for example, but he’s been batting way below average on the Dtv front recently.

There’s a lot of curiosity about director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s adaptation of the novel Fifty Shades of Grey. The E.L. James erotic tale has captured the imagination of woman all over the world, and the movie is sure to be a big success. It was recently reported that it's the fastest selling rated-r movie in Fandango history. I guess that's saying something.
A global phenomenon, Fifty Shades of Grey was first published in 2011 and follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Dornan) and college student Anastasia Steele (Johnson). Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” (2011) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (2012) explore the couple.s deepening relationship. The trilogy has been translated in over 50 languages worldwide since its release. To date, the .Fifty Shades. trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever.

Even though there are more now than ever before, there’s still a shortage of female action stars working today. Chalk that up to an unfortunately low number of films that require women in physical roles and perhaps even more at fault are the quality of those films. Sure, every now and then we get a Kill Bill, Hanna, or The Hunger Games, but more often than not it’s something like an Underworld sequel, Resident Evil, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Charlie’s Angels, or Catwoman. The latest chapter in poorly utilized action starlets comes in the form of In the Blood, which stars Gina Carano as a newlywed hell-bent discovering the truth of her husband’s disappearance even if that requires breaking a few bones to do it.

It is a dish best served cold, so they say. It is also, at least as far as cinema is concerned, less straight-forward than you might think. Someone might be on a mission and it might seem to be revenge-like, but if it turns into a rescue, does that disqualify it?
What if there is a revenge element to an otherwise-themed film? Take Taken, if you will. He wants his daughter back and is prepared to use a particular set of skills to do so, but he clearly wants some measure of revenge on the kidnappers as well. What are we to do? We could debate such questions endlessly.
With this week’s release of In The Blood , Haywire’s Gina Carano is going to have at those she holds responsible for her husband’s disappearance. So, instead of nit-picking, let’s visit some of the best revenge missions that...

Refurbished: Surnow’s Debut a Casserole of Cliché
Seasoned television writer and producer Joel Surnow makes his directorial debut with Small Time, based on an autobiographical screenplay he wrote in the mid-1970s and has since retooled. While exuding a certain amount of polish that confirms an understanding of look and tone, the film feels resoundingly cliché and inescapably dull. Despite originating from the creator’s own life experiences, the film feels overtly familiar, to such a degree that it fails to resonate visually, emotionally, or narratively. Humdrum in every sense of the word, Surnow’s film may indeed be a passion project made for his own enjoyment; unfortunately, it fails to be of particular interest to anyone else.
Al Klein (Christopher Meloni) and his best bud Ash Martini (Dean Norris) own a used car lot and happen to be quite adept at what they do, often working in tandem to score sales.

Title: In the Blood Director: John Stockwell Starring: Gina Carano, Cam Gigandet, Treat Williams, Danny Trejo, Luiz Guzman, Amaury Nolasco, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Stephen Lang If we’re keeping tabs on the evolving filmography of ex-mixed martial arts fighter and future “The Expendabelles” centerpiece Gina Carano, “In the Blood,” from director John Stockwell, slots considerably below “Haywire,” her at once lithe and bruising collaboration with Stephen Soderbergh. And yet there’s still a certain ramshackle appeal to the film, a starchy, “Taken”-meets-”Turistas” revenge picture which could just as easily be titled “Woman on Fire.” “In the Blood” centers around Ava (Carano) and Derek Grant (Cam Gigandet), a newly married couple who head to the Caribbean [ Read More ]

Survivors have scars. Losers have funerals. That is an example of the sage advice that Ava's father, an outlaw in his own right -- played with the neck straining vigor that only Stephen Lang can deliver -- gave her as he raised her to be a gal who takes crap from no one. In The Blood catches up with Ava 12 years after her father's murder. She is marrying Derek, whom she met at a support group for substance abusers. Though Derek's father (Treat Williams) has concerns that Ava is marrying Derek for his money, Derek loves her and nothing his father says or does can change that. Their honeymoon is going great, and then they meet one of the locals, Manny, who takes them out for...

Gina Carano is the only selling point that In the Blood, a predictable yet enjoyable action flick from Into the Blue helmer John Stockwell, really needs. After all, a hero who’s charismatic, easy on the eyes and capable of kicking some serious ass is hard to come by. Carano fits the bill quite nicely, and she’s the sole reason that action aficionados will (and should) check out In the Blood.
Starring as Ava, a newlywed with a rough past who goes on the hunt for her husband (Cam Giganet) after he disappears following a zip-lining accident on their Caribbean honeymoon, Carano gets her first real opportunity to prove herself as a leading lady (I’d argue that Soderbergh’s touch in Haywire made the film more about him than her). Luckily for In the Blood, there’s more to the actress than just her fists. Though the film’s script,...

Gina Carano found success as an Mma fighter, but my aversion to sweaty acronyms meant I first learned of her existence in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire. She plays a CIA (more my speed) agent framed by her own people, and the film is basically her kicking one Hollywood leading man’s ass after the next including Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, and Antonio Banderas. It’s a combination of star power and a very frequent use of Carano’s impressive fighting abilities that makes the film so fun, but more than that, those elements helped deflect attention away from the sloppy script and her poor acting. Fast forward three years later and she’s finally found a follow-up leading role, but oddly and unfortunately, In the Blood has very little clue what to do with her. Ava (Carano) and Derek (Cam Gigandet) are newlyweds on their honeymoon in the Caribbean, and...

Blood Crush: Stockwell Returns to Exotic Paradise for B Movie Thrills
Considering that In the Blood was scripted by James Robert Johnston (The Howling Reborn; Joy Ride 2) and Bennett Yellin (Dumb & Dumber films) plus directed by actor/director John Stockwell, you might be surprised at how competently structured it is, even as it operates solely on the fumes of generic derivatives, plumbing the depths of any number of B action film tropes. Cashing in on Gina Carano’s headlining presence, it can’t quite manage to escape feeling like the poor man’s version of Haywire 2, though an intriguing supporting cast distracts from the silliness of it all as it glides along to a truncated denouement.
Opening with Ava’s (Gina Carano) narration about how her father turned her into a brutal killing machine and how she remembered his death, a scene of brutal violence segues to 12 years later in Arlington,...

The creators of In the Blood seem to hate the Caribbean, depicting it as a cesspool of slums, cockfights, corrupt cops, and ruthless killers -- until, finally, director John Stockwell and company seem to feel so bad about slandering the islands that a villain (Danny Trejo) criticizes his cronies for giving their home a bad name. That he does so immediately before committing even more gruesome crimes is part and parcel of the ridiculousness of this subpar action movie, in which Ava (Gina Carano) must find her husband, Derek (Cam Gigandet), after he suffers a zip-lining accident on their honeymoon and then vanishes. Ava’s search is complicated by the fact that everyone, including a shady police chief (Luis Guzmán) and Derek’s wealthy dad (Treat ...
