Whedon wrote this script in 1992, when he was 28 years old and just moving out to Los Angeles.
Though Dylan and Rebecca spend the majority of the film on opposite sides of the country, Michael Stahl-David and Zoe Kazan would often be on-set with each other. For example, David would film his scenes, set in New Mexico, with Kazan hiding somewhere Dylan could hear but not see her.
The title of this film can be seen on the Sun Cinema marquee in Graduation Day Part 1 in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Zoe Kazan's character is similar to Sandra Bullock's in "The Lake House" (2006), in which Sandra's character communicated with Keanu Reeves', who was in a future time period. Sandra and Zoe later worked together in "Our Brand Is Crisis" (2015).
