In the second episode of its 45th season, “Saturday Night Live” went with a first-time host in “Killing Eve” and “Fleabag” creator (and star) Phoebe Waller-Bridge. However, unlike what a certain promo for this episode promised, Waller-Bridge did not carry her three Primetime Emmys around with her in every sketch…
Host: Phoebe Waller-Bridge
… and she didn’t even show them off in the opening monologue.
She did, however, get the type of freedom stand-up comedians tend to get with their opening monologues, which was a simultaneously surprising and excellent choice. After all, if you’re going to acknowledge a person’s genius as a writer, it should be on display. Waller-Bridge showed off her talent for wringing humor from the unlikeliest of places, as she does during a hilarious tangent about genitals, setting a high bar for the rest of the episode to clear, which it does.

As the lights went down in my theater and the first words in Solo: A Star Wars Story's intro began to crawl, I was mentally prepared for two things: (1) to potentially fall in love with Alden Ehrenreich and (2) for Donald Glover to steal every scene he's in. While both of those things happened - I mean, how could they not? - they still didn't come close to ranking as the best character in the film. Both of them do exceptional work, but it's Phoebe Waller-Bridge's brilliant, enlightened L3-37 droid who saunters off with Solo's best lines.
British actress, comedian, and playwright Phoebe Waller-Bridge provides the voice for L3, who cares deeply about both her partner in crime, Lando, and droid rights. She spends most of the movie cracking jokes at Lando's expense - although they're done with love, since she swears he has...

Variety reports that Phoebe Waller-Bridge—who recently drew rave reviews for her starring role in her Amazon and BBC 3 comedy series Fleabag—is being considered for “a key role” in the upcoming Han Solo standalone feature. The role would be CGI-driven—i.e., a droid or an alien, most likely—and is being compared in impact to parts like C-3Po or Alan Tudyk’s recent role as K-2So in Rogue One.
Waller-Bridge came up through British TV, appearing in shows like Broadchurch and The Cafe. She had her first breakout role in 2016’s Crashing, before going on to write and star in Fleabag, which is based on her own award-winning one-woman play. If she signs on for Han Solo, Waller-Bridge would be joining a cast that includes Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, and Alden Ehrenreich, as the beloved space scoundrel himself.

Burton and Taylor: Monday (July 22) at 9pm on BBC Four
Helena Bonham Carter is out to smother all painful memories of Lindsay Lohan in Liz & Dick, as she gives surely a far more accomplished performance of the late, great Elizabeth Taylor in this new feature-length BBC Four drama.

It's a tough ol' time for the UK sitcom right now - even TV veterans can't seem to crack the genre of late. Ben Elton - he of Blackadder and The Young Ones fame - just spewed out the critically-mauled The Wright Way for BBC One, while over on ITV, luminaries of stage and screen Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Derek Jacobi are about to indulge in the dubious pleasures of Vicious - a catty comedy that feels like it was heading for 1974 and somehow got lost along the way.
The sitcom has always been a tough nut to crack, of course - this country has produced some absolute classics, but also some absolute stinkers. This week's Friday Fiver is all about the misfires, the failures, the disasters.
Heard the phrase "So bad it's good"? Well, this bunch of 'comedies' were just plain bad.
All About Me - aired on BBC One,...
