When news broke in early February that Mariah Carey had booked a return ticket to Las Vegas to mount another residency, it was revealed that she would design the set list as a celebration of her 2005 blockbuster album, The Emancipation of Mimi.
It inspired the title of the exclusive run — The Celebration of Mimi — as well as the timing. Carey took the stage at Park MGM’s Dolby Live to launch the 16-date residency on April 12, 2024, exactly 19 years to the day after the album was released. It’s no surprise Carey wanted to commemorate the 14-track effort, which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and brought the elusive chanteuse back into familiar territory at the top of the charts. The success of Emancipation of Mimi was fueled by the No. 1 smash “We Belong Together” and punctuated by singles “It’s Like That,” “Shake It Off,” “Get Your Number,” “Don’t Forget About Us,...

Coachella 2024 kicked off Friday, and festival season is officially upon us once again.
With over 100,000 festival goers in the desert for this weekend’s debut, Day One was a stacked opening, with Lana Del Rey bringing out Billie Eilish for a duet, Shakira shocking the crowd and announcing a world tour during Bizarrap’s set, and Peso Pluma putting corridos on the world stage.
If Euphoria core influenced Coachella’s fashion in years past, 2024 has now gone cosmic cowboy as the silver boots and cowboy hats took over the festival grounds.

Other guests included Antonoff, who played piano alongside a hologram version of Del Rey singing a pre-recorded version of “Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have – But I Have It.” Plus, Batiste played keys for Del Rey as she pole-danced and sang “Candy Necklace.

This past July marked 10 years since Thundercat released his sophomore album, Apocalypse. Now, the virtuoso bassist is commemorating the release with a deluxe reissue, titled Apocalypse 10-Year Edition, due on March 1st, 2024 via Brainfeeder.
Produced by Flying Lotus, the original Apocalypse featured 12 tracks, all presenting Thundercat’s unique sound and capacity for expression. The reissue will arrive with two previously-unheard bonus tracks: “Before I loved myself ‘I’ pooped my ankles (true)” featuring Taylor Graves and Thundercat’s late collaborator, Austin Peralta; and “Paris” featuring Mono/Poly.
Thundercat and Peralta were close collaborators, with the latter appearing on the former’s debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, in 2011. Peralta’s death in 2012 at the age of 22 hit Thundercat particularly hard, which influenced Apocalypse.

In a fascinating example of one classic rock star paying tribute to another, Bono of U2 once wrote an essay about Elvis Presley’s greatness and influence. In that essay, he said watching Elvis’ ’68 Comeback Special when he was a child was an incredible experience. The U2 star would later cite one of the King of Rock’ n’ Roll’s songs as having a huge impact on him.
Bono felt there was something religious about Elvis Presley’s ’68 Comeback Special’
In 2010, Rolling Stone released its list of the 100 greatest artists. Elvis was No. 3 on the list, behind only Bob Dylan and The Beatles. Bono wrote an essay for the list about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
“I was eight years old when I saw the ’68 Comeback Special — which was probably an advantage,” he wrote. “I hadn’t the critical faculties to divide the different Elvises into different categories or sort through the contradictions.

Being a superstar doesn’t always mean having chart hits.
From massive rock groups and boy bands to iconic vocalists and singer-songwriters, there are countless acts that have managed to inspire generations of entertainers and win over millions of fans without having ever actually notched a No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Over the years, there have been some especially surprising icons who would seem to have a few No. 1s under their belt, but for whatever reason, their songs never managed to wind up sitting at the top spot of the chart.
Not having a No. 1 doesn’t take away from these talented artists’ repertoire, and it’s pretty interesting to see how charts don’t always mean everything when it comes to a musician’s success and impact on the culture.

Monday’s episode of The Voice not only served up the last of Season 24’s Battles, it threw out the first of the three-way Knockouts. The rules are mostly the same as in Season 22: John Legend, Gwen Stefani, Niall Horan and Reba McEntire group their team members in threes to try to out-sing one another. The coach then picks a winner, and the two losers are available to be saved by their coach or stolen by an opponent. The TV show "The Summer I Turned Pretty" takes Jenny Han's trilogy of coming-of-age books and turns them into must-watch summer TV. So far, each season has been inspired by one of the three books, with the second season, which premiered in July, based on the second book, "It's Not Summer Without You." The show has been renewed for a third season, and it will probably be based on the third and final book, "We'll Always Have Summer." And while the TV show has made some changes from the source material, the series is pretty faithful to the romantic plot of the books. If you just can't wait to find out what happens to Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah, read on to find out how the book series wraps up its stories!

Janelle Monáe is truly in her Age of Pleasure. It’s been four months since her latest album arrived, and now, she’s back with a remix of one of the record’s standout tracks: “Champagne Shit.” Listen to the new version featuring Quavo and Latto below.
Built around the same upbeat arrangement as the original, the “Champagne Shit” remix is an ode to the good life. Monáe’s verses about throwing “tips” and “hips” set the tone, with Quavo coming in with references to the “ice” on his collar and “champagne” on his wrist, and lines like, “Bring some models and bring me more bottles.” Latto, meanwhile, delivers a hard-hitting, pleasure-seeking verse, with the closing line: “Trying go home to the D like a piston.” Stream the track below.
The Age of Pleasure debuted on June 9th and has been praised for embracing freedom, joy, and, of course, pleasure.

If you plan to attend Usher's "My Way" Las Vegas residency, you'll want to arrive early because you don't want to miss the preshow dance party courtesy of his unmatched fans. As I walked into the Park MGM arena for the show I was attending in late June, my ears were greeted with classic R&b and hip-hop songs like Tevin Campbell's "Can We Talk" and Miguel's "Adorn You" as a DJ encouraged us to stand, dance, and sing along with the rest of the audience. Usher's dancers even came out and interacted with the audience, inviting some lucky attendees to dance with them on stage. The vibes felt more like a house party with all of my best friends than a concert surrounded by strangers. So much so that I didn't even realize the show was starting.

Quavo is aiming to “turn tragedy into triumph” with a new album, Rocket Power, set to arrive Aug. 4.
The Migos rapper announced the album with a 90-second trailer that finds him alone in a desert, watching a rocket ship launch while holding up his late bandmate Takeoff’s rocket ship chain. The song includes a bit of new music, with a chorus in which Quavo proclaims, “It’s all love, yeah it’s all love/I guess we got to be together in this small world.”

In early May, we travelled to Nashville to spend a couple of days with Mick Mars and hear about his bitter departure from Mötley Crüe. Mars stepped away from the touring unit in late 2022 after 41 years in the group he co-founded. He’d been suffering from the debilitating bone disease ankylosing spondylitis for decades, and life on the road simply became too painful to endure. In his telling, they used this as an excuse to violate legal agreements and deny him his share of band proceeds. The matter is currently...

Offset and Quavo reunited for a surprise performance to honor their late groupmate, Takeoff, who was fatally shot on Nov. 1 in Houston, Texas, with a touching tribute during this year’s BET Awards.
The duo performed together for the first time since they disbanded their hip-hop trio, Migos, after releasing their fourth and final studio album Culture III in 2021. When the awards show returned from a commercial break, a curtain raised on a darkened stage with two shadowed figures emerging: Quavo and Offset, standing before an image of the Space Shuttle. As a recording of Takeoff’s verse on the song “Hotel Lobby” began, the space shuttle took off and the pair launched into the group’s biggest hit, “Bad & Boujee.”

Migos’ Quavo and Offset delivered a surprise performance, their first since Takeoff was killed on Nov. 1, 2022, at the BET Awards on Sunday.
Held at Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, the pair launched the set with “Hotel Lobby,” the song released by Unc and Phew aka Quavo and Takeoff in May of last year (Quavo is Takeoff’s uncle and the song appeared on their collaborative album, Only Built for Infinity Links). For years, it's been widely believed that all three members of Migos - the Atlanta rap collective once comprised of Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff - were directly related to one another. But according to Offset, that's not entirely accurate. In a revealing interview with Variety, published on May 24, the rapper shared with the publication that he doesn't actually have direct familial ties to his former group members.
Previously, in the wake of Takeoff's shocking death in 2022, Insider reported that the rap trio came together in 2008 when Quavo teamed up with his nephew Takeoff (to whom he's actually related) and cousin Offset. According to Variety, though, Quavo and Offset's cousin titles stemmed from the two hanging out with each other and Takeoff when Offset was in the sixth grade. The three would also often hang out in Quavo's mom's basement growing up, leading to their rap group and influential "triplet flow" style of rapping.

Paul McCartney wrote classic rock songs for numerous artists besides The Beatles. For example, he penned Badfinger’s “Come and Get It.” Subsequently, Paul revealed what he thought of the song and the band.
Paul McCartney left Linda McCartney in bed to write Badfinger’s ‘Come and Get It’
In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul discussed how “Come and Get It” came together. “I wrote this very late one-night at Cavendish Avenue, leaving Linda in bed and saying, I’ve got an idea for a song,” he recalled.
Paul had a positive reaction to the song immediately. “I went downstairs and just whispered it into my tape recorder,” he said. “I played it very quietly so as not to wake her.” Paul described the tune as “a very catchy song.” Notably, The Beatles recorded a demo of “Come and Get It” that appears on some copies of the album Abbey Road.

Shamir has readied a new album called Homo Anxietatem, his ninth album to date. The new project arrives August 18th via the legendary Kill Rock Stars, and today, the artist has shared lead single “Oversized Sweater.”
Produced by Hoost, the Rina Sawayama boardsman otherwise known as Justin Tailor, Homo Anxietatem sees the genre-shifting Shamir dip into alternative pop. As a tip off to its subject matter, the record’s title translates to “anxious man” in Latin. Those themes leak into the Y2K-influenced album opener “Oversized Sweater,” which Shamir described in a statement.
“The first quarter of 2020 before lockdown I felt a lot of anxiety,” the artist explained. “I was fresh out the psych ward and had quit smoking weed and cigarettes cold turkey. I spent the first couple months of 2020 knitting this huge baby blue sweater. It’s basically a wearable security blanket that I used to channel all my anxiety into.

Anyone who grew up in a dysfunctional household knows just how traumatic childhood can be. In Moon Garden, writer/director Ryan Stevens Harris visualizes those traumas as the nightmarish denizens of the dark, industrial wasteland that a young girl finds herself trapped in.
Emma lives with her parents Sara and Alex. They love Emma, but they don’t love each other anymore. After getting a scare one night she runs to their room, only to encounter something even scarier, the two of them in the midst of a loud, intense argument. Running from it she trips and takes a fall down the stairs which leaves her in a coma. Her struggle to awake from it becomes a nightmarish trip...

In 2013, Miley Cyrus launched her "Bangerz" era, marking her transformation from Disney Channel's Hannah Montana into a full-fledged pop star. Now, years after she ditched her blond wig and bedazzled microphone, fans suspect Cyrus might have a new alter ego. On April 26, rumors began circulating that Cyrus had released a secret album under the pseudonym Clara Pierce. As evidence, fans pointed out that the 12-track album made its debut on March 10, the same day Cyrus released "Endless Summer Vacation." Drumming up even more speculation, Pierce's voice sounds strikingly similar to Cyrus's.
"Just go listen to the songs," TikTok user shanecardinalofficial said in a video, referencing Pierce's album "Down With Me." Previously, the album was available on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, but it has since been removed. Still, fans who have heard the tracks insist that the vocals belong to Cyrus.

The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.
“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.
This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

On March 10, Miley Cyrus returned with her eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation. It wasn’t the devastating divorce album she was expected to release, with her ruminations on the dissolution of her relationship with Liam Hemsworth tucked in between sweaty dance records and self-love anthems. All of the grit and emotional indulgence, it seems, might have been saved for Down With Me, the 12-track album of songs featuring Cyrus’s vocals released on the same day under the pseudonym Clara Pierce.

Four months after Takeoff’s untimely death, his uncle and Migos groupmate Quavo are continuing to honor the late star. On Friday, the rapper released the song “Honey Bun,” dedicated to Takeoff.
A video accompanied the new song and features Quavo rapping from inside a vault filled with money and paperwork. “How can I come outside without no mask on?/They want to see my emotions,” raps the artist while wearing a black mask covering half his face. “I ain’t smiling at all/I bought a bulletproof Humvee it can take down a wall.

Mariah Carey is famous for topping the charts. In fact, she holds the record for the most number-one hits by a solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100 (19), and she became the first artist ever to hit number-one in four different decades. But of course no one can send every song they’ve recorded to the top of the charts. A number of Carey’s greatest hits didn’t reach the summit, but they belong in any discussion of her storied career. Scroll down for our countdown of her best non-chart-toppers.
Early in her career it was hard to find Carey singles anywhere but number-one. The first four from her very first album reached that position. The 1990s continued at that same pace: a whopping 14 of her chart leaders were released in that decade. The 2000s were less auspicious for her: she had career and tabloid trouble when her movie “Glitter” and its accompanying soundtrack underperformed.
