Chicago – A second major Earth Day film has emerged from the weekend, along with Disney Studio’s “Chimpanzee.” The documentary “To the Arctic 3D,” narrated by Meryl Streep, is a cautionary and virtuous look at life on the ice caps at the top of the world. The IMAX film has a spectacular vision, showing a planet’s necessary ecosystem in a troubling meltdown state.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The doc is paired with a soundtrack by Paul McCartney, and has such phantasmagoric imagery it’s possible the brain can slip into Yellow Submarine mode. The whole thing works because it is stark and bold in its assertion that greenhouse gasses are ruining a part of the world that keeps every other living thing on the rest of the planet in balance. With supporting roles by the lifeforms that inhabit this part of the world, it is undeniable proof that this situation will keep...

Sunday is Earth Day, and as a result, Hollywood is offering such nature-oriented entertainment choices as the Disney ape documentary Chimpanzee and the IMAX short film To the Arctic 3D. But a third and decidedly more indie option is One Day on Earth, a grassroots documentary that compiled more than 3,000 hours of footage from every country in the world and whittled it down to a 104-minute movie. The footage was shot by more than 19,000 amateur and professional filmmakers during the course of a single day: October 10, 2010. And now the film will be screening this Sunday at select theaters in more than 160 countries.

Who’S It For? To the Arctic offers entertainment suitable for young families, along with anyone that can appreciate dedicated cinematography when they see it.
Overall
Primarily motivated by its passion for capturing soaring exterior shots of massive glaciers, or up close and personal shots of polar bears, To the Arctic succeeds at reminding you why you’ll probably regret not seeing such a landscape with your own eyes. On the other hand, its immersive 3D and huge IMAX presentation makes for a solid alternative to experiencing deadly frost, and campground invasions by rude wildlife.

The summer blockbuster season may be just around the corner, but you wouldn't know it from the dull group of releases hitting theatres this weekend. When a Disney nature documentary and a Nicholas Sparks adaptation are your only real options, you know you might be in trouble. That being said, Chimpanzee doesn't look half-bad and The Lucky One could finally knock The Hunger Games off its perch at the box office. Also in wide release we have Think Like a Man starring Chris Brown and Kevin Hart, and in select theatres we have a few other docs including Marley and Fightville. Lawrence Kasdan's Darling Companion and Mary Harron's The Moth Diaries are also playing on a few screens each. What will you be checking out this weekend? Chimpanzee The Lucky One Think Like a Man Marley (limited) To The Arctic 3D (limited) Darling Companion (limited) Jesus Henry Christ...

If you’ve ever seen any trailer for any nature documentary, then you already know what to expect from To the Arctic 3D‘s preview: swooping shots of landscapes, animals doing funny and cute things, a celebrity voiceover, and some incongruous song covering the whole thing with a certain everyday sheen.
This isn’t to say that those shots of nature aren’t stunning — I’m willing to bet even more so in well-converted IMAX 3D — or that Meryl Streep‘s soft voice doesn’t feel like a great choice for this kind of project; to be perfectly honest, I think I’d like to see this when it hits theaters, with the right format provided. It’s just a case of “been there, done that” when we get down to the marketing side of things.

Join us on a spectacular adventure! Warner Bros and IMAX have debuted the official trailer on Apple for the upcoming nature documentary To The Arctic 3D, directed by Greg MacGillivray, of Everest and many other nature IMAX movies previously. This charming, chilly doc focuses on a mother polar bear and her two seven-month-old cubs as they navigate the changing Arctic wilderness they call home. While this does look wonderfully charming, it's elevated by the use of some Sigur Ros and Oscar winner Meryl Streep on the narration. Put those two together with a slice of beautiful imagery, and I'm in, this is mesmerizing. Enjoy! Watch the official trailer for Greg MacGillivray's To The Arctic 3D, in high def from Apple: You can also download the official To The Arctic 3D trailer in High Definition over on Apple An extraordinary journey to the top of the world, Greg MacGillivray's...

If the trailer for To The Arctic 3D is any indication, this documentary is going to be a truly stunning 3D and IMAX experience. Directed by Greg MacGillivray and narrated by Meryl Streep, To The Arctic follows a mother polar bear as she cares for her twin seven-month-old cubs. The trailer below, which you can view in HD at iTunes gives us a sample of the amazing footage captured for the documentary, including numerous under-water shots of the bears and other wildlife. It seems likely that animal and nature enthusiasts - especially those who loved the 2005 documentary March of the Penguins - will want to try to catch To The Arctic. And from what we see in the trailer, the film is likely to look exquisite on an IMAX screen and in 3D. There really isn.t a single frame in the video above that doesn.t give us something...

Fox isn’t always great when it comes to selling things even a little bit outside the box, so seeing them handle a sci-fi comedy should be more than a little interesting. Neighborhood Watch has a big cast filled with marketable names — Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Billy Crudup, among others — but getting people interested in a movie that pits those guys against antagonistic aliens might take more creativity than, say, another Planet of the Apes.
Is the first poster going to get things off on the right foot? I’ve actually got no clue, but being the first material most will even see from the film — and, in turn, the first time most people will hear of it, too — I’d wager that a decent job is done. There’s a little intrigue, some of those big names, and not nearly enough in the way of explanation to give much away.
