Endearing Aussie comedy/tear jerker!
lucienm-6032131 May 2023
Storyline seemed a bit covered by many movies and series about ghosts needed to complete unfinished business before "crossing over" ... However, surprisingly, this Aussie series set in Brisbane is actually endearing and great mixture of comedy and drama and tear jerking !

Casting is excellent !

Enjoyed the chosen filming locations around Brisbane.

I particularly liked how the characters interact straight from the beginning.

It's a series where it's easy to follow the storyline, feel the compassion for the way each character manage the grief.

How each character evolves through the episodes.

Above all, it's not a series that gives lessons on the "afterlife".

Great binge series
mel-baker76 July 2023
This could easily have been a movie too, watched all episodes in a row in one night. A heartfelt Aussie drama, with laughs and tears, and real to life situations. One thing most series or films have not done well is mental health especially for men. This series does this exceptionally well, especially the last two episodes. It tells us that it is okay to talk about stuff that we tend to hold within ourselves that only makes things worse. It tells us that we should look after and out for our mates. It tells us how to recognise and notice when our mates may not be going well, and how to step in. And it also demonstrates how easy it is to start a conversation off with a therapist, and that it is okay to ask for help and go to therapy. Well done to the writer, director and producer of this series.

Perfect!

A very real situation dealt with in true Aussie style with humour and feeling. As other reviewers have said, a "ghost" being in limbo and unable to "pass over".

Hilarity ensues as Charlie and Nate try and figure out what unfinished business is keeping Nate in limbo.

This also deals with the confusion, anger and grief experienced by those left behind when someone dies unexpectedly.

It also has snippets of the aftermath of divorce and how differently people cope with the fallout from that.

I've made this series sound quite depressing and full of angst but it is anything but. It is extremely clever and beautifully produced.

Nate's unlimited supply of colourful shirts is an added joy. Whoever sourced them is a genius!

Heartfelt, gut wrenching, hilarious top-not h Australian television
Lostmuse26 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A true Aussie show. Tackling tough topics in a heartfelt, hilarious at times, and gut wrenching way. Ryan and Bob, as the two leads, are so talented and have portrayed their characters in an astonishingly authentic way.

Emma, as Nate's wife really nailed the nuance of grief after losing a partner without answers.

Tears and laughter from the first episode.

I wish there was more of this show to look forward to, but it wrapped it in such a beautiful way that it would be an insult to bring out another season.

Top notch Australian TV, and a beautiful way to portray a tough and very relevant topic.

Witty, heartfelt and quintessentially Australian
hjlochtenberg30 May 2023
Absolutely loved this series. Binged it in an afternoon. Captivating and so realistic!

A beautiful insight into friendship, loss and men's inability to speak their feelings. Made me laugh, cry and reflect. Best Aussie drama I've seen in a long time, using an iteresting take on grief.

Believable relationships with all characters, friends and family. A truly modern, Australian take on suicide and and the afterlife. I think anyone who has been touched by mental illness will appreciate the humour that sometimes needs to go along with these topics.

Overall very funny that features star performances from the lead two, who play a gorgeous duo.

Great to see Russell Dykstra again.

Male depression beautifully done
bmk-1308814 August 2023
This has got to be one of the best examples of what male depression is all about and who it affects. Wonderfully acted with the comedic accents not taking away from the seriousness of depression and what it can do to the victim and those that it impacts.

Those critics that have given the series a low score need to watch the whole series and not comment on 2 episodes. This series far from trivialises suicide or depression, it is sensitively filmed and seriousness is never diminished.

It is absolutely worth the watching this series to the conclusion with anyone who might be affected or has been impacted by depression.

Claptrap disguised as clever drama
imdb-48416 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After a very promising opening episode, it quickly became obvious to me that Charlie was not actually being haunted by Nate, but by his own inner demon: schizophrenia. But the series trivialises this with its pretense of Nate being 'in limbo'.

How do we know he's not really in limbo? Because he never once gives Charlie any information Charlie doesn't already know! Nate keeps saying "there's no easy answer, mate..." But in the final episode we find out that there actually was an easy answer after all and he could have explained it very quickly indeed. But he didn't - simply because Nate's ghost never existed other than in Charlie's imagination.

As if trivialising schizophrenia isn't enough, the final episode then goes on to trivialise another mental illness, bipolar disorder. In the final 15 minutes of the last episode it's revealed by Nate that he's suffered from bipolar for years - but if so, this would have become obvious to Freya many years ago - you just can't hide bipolar from those closest to you, because the depression and the mania are so pervasive that they take over your life.

So thanks to the silly writing, we have a series that's disingenuous to not just one but two mental illnesses and does absolutely nothing to educate the audience about either of them.

To be fair, there is some very fine acting in this series from the main cast, as well as some more stilted performances from the supporting cast (such as Freya's in-laws and mother). The direction and the cinematography are also first class.

It's the story itself - the writing, which lets it down. It's claptrap, disguised as what others are flippantly describing as clever Aussie drama.

Just, Absolutely Wonderful...
mmiceli092430 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
And...The Australian Television system has hit the gold mine again.

In Limbo tells the story of Nate and Charlie. Nate died ( not a spoiler, keep your shorts on), and Charlie still sees Nate as he can not " pass over".

Which means, Nate, can not get into the after-world, because he is in limbo.

A premise, done before? Yes. Has it been done better? 100 percent, Not. This show is so enjoyable. The reason stands, because 2 of my favorite Aussie actors star. Charlie is played by Ryan Corr...a lot of you may know him from, " Packed...Rafters" or the excellent " Tangle", among others. Bob Morley plays, Nate. I for one discovered Bob from the excellent " Love me".

I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful these two play off each other. Not to make this review even longer, Emma Harvie who plays Freya, Nate's widow, along with all the supporting cast are fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend this great series. 6 episodes/30 minutes each. Chefs kiss.

Awful trivialisation of suicide
mike-9410326 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had to stop halfway through episode two. I can't believe how utterly tone-deaf the writers are around the subject of suicide!

Ok - so I probably needed a content warning (personal experience of family suicide). But to see the dead guy's sister-in-law breezing around the house, smiling and joking before her brother is even buried?! Really?!! Yeah nah. Too much disbelief to suspend for me.

I know from bitter experience that those first few days are an emotional mess. No-one's going to work or football practice..

It's a pity because there were promising elements. The connection between the two main male characters appeared genuine and it would have been interesting to explore that further.

One of the best shows I've seen in a long time.
The show deals with tragedy, loss, family, friendship, and it does so in a funny and heartwarming way.. while the topic is serious and affects people everyday, the show approaches it with humanity and humor where appropriate, and with seriousness when it is needed. Questions of spirituality and religion are addressed head-on without being preachy or dogmatic. The characters are well developed and the casting and directing are top notch. We need more shows like this that are relatable and human and not just about sex or dysfunctional families.. I binged the entire season in one night, I just couldn't stop!

Excellent handling of an important topic
terrip-t130 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A humorous and deep show about how friends and family react and cope after a suicide. The acting was marvelous. I really enjoyed Bob Morley as Nate, Ryan Corr as his best friend Charlie, and Emma Harvie as Freya, Nate's wife. The characters are so relatable.

I found the portrayal of depression in this series to be very accurate and powerful. But it isn't a depressing show. That seems to be a hard combination to achieve. It is funny, sweet and raw at the same time. The description of how depression feels and affects people given by Bob Morley is the best I've seen in a show that I can recall.

This is really worth the watch.
