Waiting

Directed by Anu Menon
There are hospitals — and there are hospitals — to take care of the ill. But there are no schools to to teach us how to cope with the ill.
Waiting is about two people whose respective spouses are seriously ill and in a coma. Shiv (Naseeruddin Shah) and Tara (Kalki Koechlin) are just…waiting…waiting for a miracle, perhaps?
Of the two Tara is the younger, hence angry, confused and bitter. Shiv, who doesn’t know his from Adam (or Eve) takes charge of her — sort of — holds her hand — sort of — and guides her through the various stages that the bereaved must go through before they attain a state of calm acceptance.
There is this elegantly-staged scene in Tara’s hotel room where Shiv explains to her how she must make her bewildered way through the many emotions that destiny...

Wife of acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam and noted actress, Suhasini Ratnam, is all set to step into Bollywood. The actress is making her debut opposite Naseeruddin Shah in Anu Menon’s Waiting that is slated to have a world premiere at the Dubai International Film Festival (Diff) on December 11. Interestingly however, the director reveals that Suhasini, who has acted in over 50 films in the South and even won a National Film Award for Best Actress for a Tamil film, required a little persuasion from her filmmaker-husband before she accepted the film.
Anu says, “Suhasini was shocked when I offered her the role of Naseer’s wife. She said that the only time she had ever spoken in Hindi was with a Bihari cook.” The director reveals that in the film Suhasini’s character speaks a mix of Hindi and English with a strong South Indian accent. “She used to take...

11 months after his last hit Chashme Baddoor, Ali Zafar is back on the big screen with Total Siyapaa. While the David Dhawan directed comedy was as 'filmy' as it gets, Total Siyapaa is on the lines of other concept based films like Tere Bin Laden and London Paris New York that Ali has been a part of.
"Mostly, what I look for in my films is the content of the script. Also, it works when such films are made on a tight budget. Like for example Total Siyapaa was shot in 28 days flat. We could afford to do that as the script was water tight and we didn't have to invent things on the sets. I could pretty much sense that the shooting would be smooth once Neeraj Pandey shared the script with me. It sounded very direct and balanced. Now that was a feat in itself because the very...

After London Paris New York, the forthcoming Total Siyapaa sees Ali Zafar (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Tere Bin Laden) take up the task of being singer, composer, lyricist and lead actor again. London Paris New York, while a little rough around the edges, was a well composed album with some endearing tracks. Naturally, there are reasonable expectations from the music of Total Siyapaa. The album is made up of 5 tracks, all featuring Ali Zafar, save for the duet which also features the vocal styling of Fariha Parvez. Lyrics have been penned by Zafar, Aqeel Rubi and Kumaar.
The album kicks off with the title track, Total Siyapaa, a quirky number with humorous lyrics intermingled with snippets of dialogue between the films’ characters. It is a relatively fun track with a bit of a retro vibe and touches of Punjabi which are quite catchy. It undoubtedly serves as a promotional...

Though still relatively knew to the Hindi film space, actress Aditi Rao Hydari certainly has made an impression. She made her Hindi film debut in Delhi 6, then starred in Yeh Saali Zindagi, appeared in Rockstar, starred with Ali Zafar in the romantic London Paris New York, and most recently was seen as the lead in thriller Murder 3. It’s quite the eclectic and cool mix of genres and roles, and with each performance she has been given great reviews. Next up is the masala film, Akshay Kumar’s Boss, where she plays, as she says, a fun, typical Hindi movie heroine. Check out what she told us in our really fun and fab chat about all things Boss!
Tell us why you decided to take this role in this film.

If the turn out at the nominations bash was this amazing, we can only imagine how fabulous the red carpet at the 58th Idea Filmfare Awards 2012 will be. For now here’s my take on fashion on red carpet on the night of the nominations bash!
Anushka Sharma & Imran Khan
With the release of their film finally out of their way, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola stars Imran Khan & Anushka Sharma finally were able to make a non-in-character appearance. Anushka works the Cue by Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna look and how! Loving the hi-low sequined top, the chunky strap heels and the dark lips. As for her partner in crime Imran, well he looked quite dapper as well in his grey suit and purple striped tie. Loving that he’s ditching the clean-shaven look these days. This works for me more. What do you think ladies?
Verdict: Anushka & Imran are Hot!

That 2012 began with an overwrought hyper-melodramatic brutal and tumultuous remake of Agneepath and ended with Yash Chopra’s muted mellow all-heart-no-malice ode to romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan seems indicative of the direction that Bollywood seems headed for. The journey, as we can see, is unpredictable and largely exciting. Looking back, some films of 2012 that fetched hype-star ratings seem bloated and over-eager to please either critics or the masses, but never both. Luckily the films that were truly meritorious did get a place under the swoon.

Looking back at 2012 song-ically, it certainly was a year of cool sounds, new voices, groovy and groovin’ beats and over all some killer tracks. Many of the songs brought a new vibe to the music of the movies, songs flavored with new influences, and songs that we never would have thought we would hear in a Bollywood flick. There were classic beats that got us up and dancing not to mention the grooves of today that got us to move to the music. We met some new singers we can’t wait to hear more of and some of our favorites blew us away with outstanding vocals. 2012 was full of surprises and we enjoyed so many of them, 50 in fact and every single note! As always we loved these songs when they first came out but once we saw them in the movie we loved them even more! Check out...

People choose to start with a bang, however Aditi Rao Hydari has chosen to silently climb the ladder and slowly enter the hearts of the viewers. She debuted in a Hindi film (after a Malayalam and a Tamil film) with a supporting role in Delhi 6. To our disappointment we hardly saw her in the film. However, she returned with a bang in Yeh Saali Zindagi and gave us a performance that we can only expect from actresses who are not just 3 films old. After playing one of the leads in Ysz, she returned to a supporting role in Rockstar and thankfully this time she didn’t go as unnoticed. But the real commercial break came with her 2012 release London Paris New York, which although didn’t sound loud and proud at the box office, was a solo film to her credit that got her noticed by the industry and audience alike.

'London Paris New York' (2012)
Starring Ali Zafar, Aditi Rao Hydari
There isn't enough reason to fall in love, but you want to. It's the soft English rain, the pink sunshine of Paris, the moonlight in Manhattan. You've never seen eyes as luminous as hers, or a smirk as sexy as his. You hope there's more.
He's got issues—rich, neglectful parents and the memory of a dead brother he can't live down—but that could make him interesting. Could. She's an earnest feminist, passionately political, but she doesn't really know herself yet. It might be worth finding out who she turns into. Might. Does it matter that their banter is a bit banal? A little.
It's that kind of movie, with those kinds of characters, who make you feel like they do—sucked in by the allure of the romantic setup and the loveliness of each other, but fumbling with what's lacking.

It's that kind of movie, with those kinds of characters, who make you feel like they do—sucked in by the allure of the romantic setup and the loveliness of each other, but fumbling with what's lacking.

Tigmanshu has now joins hands with producers Goldie Behl and Shrishti Arya of Rose Movies for his next directorial venture. Ironically their last respective films, London Paris New York and Paan Singh Tomar, released on the same day. While both films did encouraging business, the makers now team up for an idea they discussed while working on Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai over ten years ago. In 2001, Tigmanshu discussed the idea of doing an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet in Hindi and Goldie loved the idea. Says Tigmanshu, "Goldie and I had planned to make Hamlet when he made his debut - Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai, for which I wrote the dialogues. I guess every film has...

Emran is looking forward to the release of Shanghai opposite Abhay Deol and says his fans will see him in a different light. Can you fall in love with the same person over and over again? Does meeting them at different stages of your and their life mean you meet a new person each time? Anu Menon perhaps did not think I’d walk out the cinema with such questions after watching her debut film but essentially that is what London Paris New York is all about.
Menon divides the romance of her characters in three phases, each phase reflecting the mood of the city in which the characters are. Nikhil and Lalita’s love story proves that spending days and nights together isn’t what love stories are all about. The same amount of love, intensity and passion can be ignited by three simple encounters. The climax these three encounters leads to is what sets the flow for London Paris New York.

The daily routine of an Austrian paedophile who keeps a young boy locked in his cellar was hardly something anyone was queuing up to see, but this challenges us, and itself, to take a look. At the same time, it thankfully averts its gaze from scenes of actual abuse. There are keen observations on parenting, privacy, power relations and more, but the flat, factual approach verges on dull, and the absence of empathy ultimately just leaves you feeling grubby. So get in line for the grimmest movie of the year!
This Means War (12A)

Two suspiciously close CIA buddies fall out when they discover they're dating the same woman – cue the misuse of government equipment and their own combat skills for one-upmanship. The romcom high concept is novel for a good reason: it's completely ridiculous.

Aditi Rao Hydari's dream to be seen as a solo lead in a quintessential Bollywood film has finally come true with London Paris New York. However the fact remains that majority of people who saw her in films like Delhi 6, Yeh Saali Zindagi and Rockstar felt that she could carry an entire film on her shoulders instead of playing a second fiddle. One wonders whether Aditi was way too relaxed in her endeavour when she continued doing supporting roles in last few years. "See, I also...
