Lisa Whelchel has tried every exercise in the book - and she's suffered the injuries to prove it. "I hurt my shoulder playing racquetball, I have a lower back injury from an aerobics class and I messed up my feet while training to climb Mount Whitney," she tells People. "Even on Survivor, when I did the mud challenge, I developed sciatica that has continued to give me trouble." So what's an active gal to do? "I decided to make my own exercise video," says Whelchel, who turned 50 in May. "It's a doable full-body workout that you can do in 20 minutes.

'Tis the season, for holiday-themed movies to bum rush the theaters. But before "The Christmas Candle" burns bright, "Frozen" casts its snowy spell, "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas" brings in yuletide laughs, or "Black Nativity" lies awake in a manger, we get "The Best Man Holiday." The sequel to 1999's "The Best Man," and written and directed by Malcolm Lee (Spike Lee's cousin), the movie reunites a dynamic cast that includes Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, and Harold Perrineau, and follows a group of friends as they assemble for the holidays.
It's the first holiday movie out of the gate, but is it too early to get into the Christmas spirit? And, perhaps most importantly, does "Best Man Holiday" fill your stocking with goodies or coal?

It took no time at all for a comment to pop up on my Google+ posting of a link to my post here “attention, Hollywood: the wild success of Gravity means audiences have no trouble identifying with a female protagonist” scolding me for my ignorance about women in movies. Cuz what would I know? Tim McDonald schools me:
There are plenty of popular movies out there already that have female protagonists.
Not that he named one.
But I figured I would test his hypothesis.
So I took a look at Box Office Mojo and counted how many films will have gotten a wide release in North America by the end of 2013. (This is a way to measure what sorts of movies Hollywood makes, because they make up the vast majority of those wide releases.) The figure is: 141.

While we're still seven weeks away from Christmas, what's traditionally known as the "holiday" box office season officially kicked off on the first weekend of November. This also mean it's time for Box Office Mojo's annual holiday movie forecast, which predicts the domestic box office for some of the biggest titles of the season.Anticipated sequels Thor: The Dark World, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug should dominate the season*combined, these three will likely earn over $800 million. After that, Disney Animation's Frozen and long-awaited comedy sequel Anchorman: The Legend Continues should also do strong business. Other serious contenders include late year awards contenders American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks and The Wolf of Wall Street, among others.Listed below are the movies we think will be the Top 12, with analysis and a specific domestic forecast. On the next page, the rest of the nationwide...

'Tis the season ... for a new "Madea" movie!
Creator Tyler Perry is releasing his hit franchise's seventh film -- and the first holiday edition. A new trailer for "A Madea Christmas" shows the no-nonsense, cantankerous grandmother (Perry) working as a Santa in a department store until best friend Eileen (Anna Maria Horsford) invites Madea to a rural town for a visit with daughter, Lacey (Tika Sumpter).
It's a classic fish-out-of-water story, with Madea dealing with redneck in-laws and cow poop. At one point, she teaches a class full of kids that Jesus "was born to the Virgin Mary ... J. Blige."
"A Madea Christmas" looks right in line with Perry's previous outings, just with a dash of holiday spirit. The movie also stars Larry the Cable Guy, Chad Michael Murray, Kathy Najimy, and Lisa Whelchel. It hits theaters December 13.

Initial word was that another YouTube celeb Sweet Brown ("Ain't nobody got time for that") had been cast in Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas, which is due out this X-mas holiday. But, that still hasn't been officially confirmed, whether by Sweet Brown herself, or Tyler Perry. While we wait with bated breath for that confirmation, another YouTube celeb, Antoine Dodson, has revealed for the first time, in an interview with Hip Hollywood, that he will appear in that Tyler Perry film. Remember Antoine Dodson from 2 years ago or so - Mr "Hide yo kids, hide yo wife, and hide yo husband..." Might both Dodson and Sweet Brown appear in A Madea's...

On paper, "Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" should have done decent business this weekend. Even though he didn't write or direct it, the meet-the-parents comedy had Perry's name on it as producer and promoter. It features two popular TV stars, Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington, in the leads. It's a movie that caters to older women and comedy fans at a time of year (summer superhero season) when both are underserved. It opened on Mother's Day weekend, a good time to catch the family business that Perry targets so effectively. Most of all, as a movie with an all-African-American cast, it seemed like smart counterprogramming to "The Great Gatsby," a movie about white people throwing parties. Perry movies typically open at around $20 million. Pundits predicted "Peeples" would earn at least half that. Instead, it debuted in fourth place, with a meager $4.9 million in estimated sales. It's Perry's weakest opening ever (eclipsing "Daddy's Little Girls,...

It’s a time for change, apparently, and Lionsgate is joining in the fun. You may have heard that 20th Century Fox is now 21st Century Fox, and more generally, movie studios are shaking things up a bit. Ok, Lionsgate is only changing their logo at the moment, but the idea is pretty interesting. Not because new logos are interesting, but because of the thought process behind the change.
Being tuned into anything in this day and age means being tuned in to marketing, and it’s hard to think of where that’s more obvious than the movie business, which many might say is virtually all marketing.
So, what’s so interesting? Well, you’d expect that Lionsgate would have something to say about the new logo, and, if you’re like most people, you’d probably expect it to be something flowery and grandiose… and something that doesn...

"Scary Movie 5" opened in theaters this past weekend and if you're like most human beings, you're probably wondering just one thing: Why?
But the fact that Hollywood made yet another "Scary Movie" is really no surprise. After all, most studios believe that while you may not be able to beat a dead horse, you can certainly continue to milk a dead cash cow ... which explains why so many franchises continue to get sequels long after any they've stopped being interesting, fresh or creative. Why make something new when you can make something cheap and derivative instead?
So with that in mind, here's a look at nine more franchises that need to end right now. Because the scariest thing we can think of is the possibility of a "Scary Movie 6."

Here's more evidence, if you're still not sure... Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas, which Perry is of course writing, directing and starring in, has landed Chad Michael Murray, Larry the Cable Guy, Kathy Najimy...

The common qualities of a Christmas production include lessons about generosity and kindness, a retelling of the manger story, or even a few carols (secular or not). Look at all the great Christmas stories and you’ll find elements of the Christmas season tastefully woven into a larger story that has merit unto itself. Forbes has come out with its annual list of the highest-paid men in entertainment -- just about five weeks after it published its list of highest paid actors (Leonardo DiCaprio topped that list) -- and heading the pack is producer-writer-director-actor Tyler Perry, with $130 million earned between May 2010 and May 2011. Perry is a one-man cottage industry, with plays, movies and TV series to his credit. On his bio for 2010-11: 'For Better or Worse' TV series (in pre-production), 'A Madea Christmas,' 'Madea's Big Happy Family,' 'For Colored Girls' and 'Why Did I Get Married Too?' The only other movie-related big-wigs on the list are Jerry Bruckheimer (with $113 million) and Steven Spielberg (with $107 million). The only actor, not surprisingly, Leonardo DiCaprio, with $77 million. See the full list ahead.
