Messy but entertaining hybrid-genre
witra_as27 July 2022
Messy but entertaining Korean hybrid-genre from Choi Dong-hoon. Took a while to understand its concept and get to know a lot of characters. Star-studded cast crafted a deft mix of high-octane action and character-driven comedy to kept us all on hold for part two.

Bait and switch
grinthorn16 December 2022
I was rather enjoying it although it's a bit too long. It has decent effects, the Asian over the top acting, nice fight choreography, soundtrack is decent. It kinda resembles Kung Fu Hustle in a way, you'll know what I mean if you've seen it. There's plenty of action, but maybe a tad bit too plenty. It was going OK, I was enjoying it, and then when I started to get bored it turned out it ends in a cliffhanger without actual resolution to the story. I really don't have any will to watch two more hours of this. There was plenty of time to finish the story here, instead of twisting and turning it inside out.

Watchable TV if you have already seen Attraction (2017)
healingtoolbox4 February 2024
The must see movie of this genre is Fyodor Bondachuk's 2017 Russian movie, Attraction. It's on many streaming platforms. The 2022 Korean Alienoid seems inspired by Attraction. What Alienoid has going for it is very good on-set morale; it's fun. Its verve, snappy dialogue, committed acting and stunts and lots of creative scenes make it watchable TV.

The VFX are stellar. The middle part of Alienoid is a Terminator vs. Terminator battle in a city with impeccable post-production values. There's also a Mission Impossible stunt reference.

As with many foreign sci-fi and fantasy movies, even with very committed acting as you have here, a series of action scenes strung together, does not add up to a blockbuster. To really pop, the characters have to have an arc of development which fuels their passion.

Awesome visuals, but way too many characters and very confusing storyline.
paulclaassen23 January 2024
If you haven't yet seen 'Alienoid' here's a word of advice: rather watch it when you're able to watch Part 2 as well. I didn't realize this was Part 1 of 2 and was very disappointed by the abrupt ending until I noticed 'TO BE CONTINUED'. Had I known that, I would have waited for Part 2 to be available as well so I could watch them back to back. With such a complex storyline and so many characters, you're bound to forget something - or someone - by the time Part 2 arrives.

As I said, this is a complex story. It is set in three different timelines and the film constantly intercuts between these timelines. There are also different characters with different storylines. The only characters who appear in all the timelines are Guard and Thunder, humanoid robots who manages and escorts alien prisoners.

So, what's the story about? Aliens lock up their criminals in human bodies (the brain to be exact), but sometimes these alien criminals can escape for a moment. It is Guard and Thunder's duty to capture and secure these criminals. Their power source is the Divine Blade. When a young mother dies during such a process in the year 1380 A. D., she begs them to take her baby with them. Guard refuses, but Thunder takes the baby without Guard's knowledge.

The film jumps ahead in time and we learn Guard raised the child, Yian, as his own. But now, at the age where she is smart enough to figure things out, Yian realizes Guard is not her father and might be an alien. Her suspicions are soon confirmed, but when she witnesses humans being implanted by aliens, she has to rely on Guard to protect her.

When the leader of the rebellion, called The Controller, is implanted in Detective Moon's brain, and escapes, it causes chaos and destruction and its up to Guard and Thunder to save the day. There's plenty of action and the scene where a car is chased by a space ship is mind blowing!! I have quite honestly never seen anything like it. The visuals are astounding! It looks like a big budget Hollywood superhero movie.

Although the film offers plenty of action and excitement I have several issues with the film. There are way too many characters and too many subplots. This is a very confusing story and difficult to keep track of all the characters and their stories. There's also too much unnecessary humour taking up too much screen time. This significantly slows down the action and could - and should - have been trimmed. With so much going on in one film I found my mind wandering. Several scenes in the film were so similar to 'Woochi: The Demon Slayer' that they seemed copied.

If you're not used to watching subtitled movies, I fear you will be completely lost trying to read AND follow and understand the film. I've seen hundreds of subtitled movies and reading subs has pretty much become second nature for me, but even so, 'Alienoid' was difficult to follow. I'm not sure I can recommend this.

Uff kind of messed up
Misss2524 September 2022
Storylines of Past-Present-Future robot, alien, human bla bla . Actually the director didn't miss anything, put everything into this and made linsey-woolsey. There weren't anything that seems to me interesting rather felt like clumsy. Why do the director had to put all these concept together? I really wanted to like and to enjoy it because of it's casts . I was kind of eagerly waiting for this movie to release. And now that I watched it, I'm having huge disappointment.

Literally bored me badly, sometimes made me confused . However, watched it for 2 hours + but won't recommend this to anyone :)

Accidentally bumped into this movie and it is quite entertaining and creative. Lasts too long though...
imseeg20 September 2022
I am usually not a fan of these kind of fantasy movies. This movie combines all sorts of genres, but it does it in a quite entertaining and creative way.

The story: alien monsters invading the earth must be fought. Lots (LOTS) of fighting follows...

The good: there are some pretty spectacular action scenes in the middle part of this movie, around 1 hour into the movie.

The bad: this movie lasts (WAY) too long. Almost 2 and a half hour and most of it is talking scenes, which isnt terrible, but there is simply too much different characters talking to each other. I lost count.

More bad: the story is all over the place, which isnt terrible, but doesnt help either in understanding who is fighting who and for what reason.

In the end this is quite an entertaining spectacle, with some flaws though...

Works when it's goofy and not serious.
Jithindurden3 September 2022
There are so many ideas mixed together in this movie and a lot of it does work. But it works mostly when it's a goofy action movie where aliens, magic and time travel come together with all its craziness. Every time the movie tries to be serious, it falters.

The one-note characters and it being just part 1 ending in a cliffhanger is not a big help either. While I did enjoy a lot of it and appreciate a lot of the ideas used, the bad parts were painstakingly bad. I would definitely be interested in a better executed version of these concepts. There's so much in it that is not fully explained and only would be explained in a sequel.

Explosive Mixture of Historical Fiction, Present-Day Action-Drama and Futuristic Science-Fiction
kluseba21 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Alienoid is the first part of a chaotic, creative and entertaining South Korean science-fiction duology that offers an extraordinary rollercoaster ride for about two and a half hours. The story revolves around humanoid robots Guard and Thunder who protect Planet Earth from an invasive parasitical alien species. In order to do so, they travel to Goryeo Dynasty and murder one such alien life form and its female human host. They decide to transport the host's baby daughter to the present day and raise her without telling her about her origins. Things spiral out of control when an invasion of alien prisoners menaces the fate of Planet Earth ten years later. In order to prevent the worst possible outcome, the two humanoid robots and their adopted daughter lure the leaders of the alien invasion into a trap that transports them all back to Goryeo Dynasty where they prepare for an ultimate showdown.

This quirky science-fiction epic convinces on several levels. First of all, the audio and visual special effects are of an absolutely outstanding quality and best enjoyed at a contemporary movie theatre. Up next, this film is filled with breathtaking action sequences with numerous vehicles and weapons. The characters are intriguing and especially the fate of the adopted daughter is at the core of this movie.

On the negative side, the numerous different connections, events and timelines can at times be overwhelming. It's hard to keep track of everything that is going on in this movie. The film's ambitious length makes the cinematic experience at times exhausting. The script would have benefited from being a little bit shorter and simpler to offer one single movie instead of two separate parts.

At the end of the day, Alienoid should please cinephiles who have appreciated the similar Along with the Gods duology that has received commercial and critical acclaim five years earlier. For those who are unaware of said duology, expect a quirky science-fiction movie that combines historical fiction, present-day action-drama and futuristic science-fiction elements. This mixture is explosive and unique but at times confusing and overwhelming. Multiple viewings are recommended to fully digest Alienoid and be prepared for its upcoming sequel. This is why you should both watch this film at your local movie theatre and purchase its digital or physical release to dive back into this fascinating universe to find out what you might have missed out on.

Go home Dong-hoon Choi, you're drunk.
Top_Dawg_Critic3 September 2022
Probably the worst screenplay, editing and directing I've seen in such an eye-candy filled movie. Feels like one screenplay from every genre was shredded and randomly pieced together.

The story lacked continuity, cohesion and most of the attempt at humor was infantile. Even some of the dialog was questionable. Writer and director Dong-hoon Choi failed in giving us a story that made much sense, and instead convoluted almost two and a half hours of story-telling with ridiculous timelines that were riddled with plot and technical issues, and lazy filler with very little substance to the story.

I could edit/cut this down to a 90 min film and even give it a proper ending, and I'd enjoy it more, and I'm not a filmmaker. If it wasn't for the amazing visual effects and decent performances, I would've turned this off after the first time-line jump. I lost interest during every change in timeline because the story kept getting sloppier and lazier.

What's worse, is that after the long dragged out 142 min runtime, there was no reward in the end; we'll probably have to sit through another convoluted 142 mins mess of a story in Part 2, and I'm not willing to make that investment. It's a generous 6/10 from me, mostly all for the visuals effects and decent performances.

5 Stars for being 2 parts without notice
Snootz30 March 2023
If there's one thing I cannot tolerate in a movie, it's being a multi-part series without any notice that it is such. The viewer sits through a very long two hours of this film, only to be dropped into a cliff-hanger. Grrrrr.

Word is the first and second part were filmed at the same time, so one would hope the second part is released soon so that we can see the resolve. Until then, this gets a mediocre 5 stars for pulling this stunt.

The filming and acting are good. The plot is intentionally confusing. The evil aliens are ridiculously powerful. There is no explanation where the "magical powers" come from (I guess the viewer just takes it for granted that back in ancient China magic exists, or something. Yeah that's it.)

This was a "difficult to sit through" movie, because it's almost continual non-stop action with only minimal story. We learn from the start that alien prisoners are being stored in human bodies and want to break free. And that's pretty much the line of the entire movie.

Add to that yet another convoluted twisted-upon-itself time travel flick, and we have a recipe for "when is this going to end and where is it going?".

Cinematically, directorially this is well done. The sets and special effects are spectacular. Welcome to the age of CGI. But when I found myself checking the time halfway through the movie, I knew this was an ongoing train wreck taking 2 hours to happen. And that's exactly what it was: unexplained and absurdist plot that abruptly ends in "FIRST OF TWO PARTS! SURPRISE!"

Bleh. Suggestion: Wait until part 2 comes out, IF part 2 comes out.

A breakthrough!
catasyaa26 July 2022
If you are a person who couldn't sit still for more than 2 hours, this might not be your cup of tea! But if you could, all the acts, comedies, sceneries, CGIs, and story-lines won't dissapoint you. I got sceptical at first, but more than satisfied at the end of the movie. I suggest to watch it in the cinema (especially 4D) so you'll have more remarkable experience. Can't wait for Alienoid Part 2!

Great scifi Kung fu flick
masalimchowdhury30 August 2022
Aliens, time travels, kung fu and robots, everything is in one. Many comedy scenes are there, at time it seems slow, but overall a good watch. It is the first part of story did not end. If you are looking for entertainment, then it's a good one. The beginning of the movie sets the plot, and as the story progress it draws you in. This part seems to build the characters for the later part. Originally in Korean language, quite hard to follow sub as characters talk very fast. Compare to other sci-fi action movies, actions are great and CGI animations are too. Imprisoning aliens in human bodies, and controller of Aliens antagonist trying to destroy earth population and in between only hero emerges as robot prison guard and its companion program...idea is unique. The story is totally new , no resemblance of any other movies. I would say it is worth watching. I liked it.

All Annoyed
compugor20 April 2023
You will be all annoyed after being captured by fast-floating action fighting and powerful special effects for over two hours during which the bad guys kick all the butt with a dumb backstory that's convoluted, nonsensical, and comes with irritatingly silly dubbed dialog that falls flat short. There is no payoff, no satisfaction, no resolution and not much of an explanation which is par for the course since there is nothing much to explain to make sense out of the mish mash mesh of time and space cross-dimensional wizardry and fancy robotics which all looked great but didn't matter in the slightest. The far superior bad guys really put quite a beat down on all opposition throughout this frustrating mess.

Mind blown
BandSAboutMovies16 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Released in South Korea as Alien+Human Part 1, this is one wild movie, weaving together three different timelines come together, all based around aliens putting their criminals into human bodies and trapping them on Earth where they are tracked, extracted and contained by Thunder (the voice of Kim Dae-myung) and Guard (Kim Woo-bin), two robots armed with a weapon called the Crystal Knife which leds them see and travel through time. As a result of a battle in 1380, Guard has promised to raise Yian (Choi Yu-ri), the daughter of the human host of one of the aliens who is killed in combat, as his own daughter. Now, they seek the Collector, the alien mastermind trying to help all of these convict aliens to escape Earth.

Meanwhile, in 1391, Muruk (Ryu Jun-yeol) is a bounty hunter magician who -- along with other martial artists like a masked shaman and a husband and wife magician duo -- are on the hunt for the Divine Blade, which is -- you guessed it -- from space.

Director and writer Choi Dong-hoon does something pretty amazing here in that he takes two wildly different stories -- science fiction and historic Korean fantasy -- and jams them into one film that really feels like fifty films in the space of a little over two hours.

So spoiler warning: This movie is going to make your head spin and the story is too big for just one film, as this is just the first part. Don't let that hold you back. I haven't seen this much imagination in one film for some time, a movie that mixes nearly every genre into one cocktail and somehow comes out tasting way better than you'd been led to think it would. Does it always make sense? Nope. Does it look awesome? Yes.

Innovation is the highest!
FounHUGO14 September 2022
I've always disliked Korean culture, especially Korean movies and TV, but this movie really surprised me.

Sci-fi genres are so consumed these days that it seems impossible to come up with any new ideas (and they're mostly American productions). No matter how people shoot a sci-fi work, it's more or less boring (especially sci-fi TV)... Under this circumstance, this Korean film actually brought out a lot of new ideas on this subject! It is really invaluable.

The male protagonist, a pair of immortals, the little girl's aunt, a few assistants to the warden... These characters are very well created.

In particular, the two "immortals" are objective, neutral, intelligent, humorous, brave, decisive, and have a high level of business... They are still full of the spirit of capitalism! Isn't this a representation of the American spirit! (Obviously different from those selfish ghosts who only know how to bow down to Trump, but are actually a group of rabble. Their IQ is only worthy of immersing themselves in lies to find the lowest happiness... If you see this, you really become unhappy , please turn to fox, or go to Trump's website specially opened for you, which is dedicated to your happiness and truth).

Absolute nonsense
zzzxxxcccvvv-4320228 September 2022
Don't be fooled by the "Independence day" movie trailers. This movie is mostly just slap stick comedy set in old Korea. It's a horrible bait-and-switch that is going to piss off a lot of people. If I saw this in the theater I would probably walk out and ask for a refund, that's how bad this is.

How do you even review something that is just random nonsense? As an overview, a magically Jeep travels through time hunting aliens while local villagers do comedy routines. No reason for anything. Every character is annoying and unlikeable. No drama. No suspense. I would say the movie is for little kids but it's so long and boring that most kids would lose interest.

FANTASTIC
keirenzie31 July 2022
I like the movie, even though at the beginning and the middle it was shown 2 different timelines and made me confused, but in the end it was explained too. I like the male and female (i forgot their names) acting, the one who has a mirror. And part 2 will air next year. Can't wait.

Typical Korean sci-fi
Leofwine_draca21 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So the Koreans have really been getting into science fiction in the past few years and ALIENOID is a good example of the kind of film they're making. Unfortunately it comes across as very derivative of Hollywood at times, particularly the Marvel films, and by now I can't be the only one sick of seeing people tossed around the screen like rag dolls all the time. So repetitive! Elsewhere, this has much of interest, not least a time travel storyline that allows for a dual narrative split between the 14th century and the present day. The acting is fine, there's martial arts, humour, sci-fi and more besides, and one destructive set-piece midway through that blows the mind. But it's at least half an hour too long, and even then turns out to only be the first half of a two-parter...

monsters monsters monsters.
cdcrb27 August 2022
Korean film, apparently part one of proposed three chapters. Sort of a comic book come to life. Monsters from space inhabit human bodies, unknowingly to them. When monsters escape they have to be captured before they can do any damage. Lots going on here and not really easy to keep up with. You'll get the hang of things after a while. Its non stop action, for sure. Waste of time watching at home. Needs the big screen to have any effect. Its also exhausting after a while. More is more in this case. I am surprised that its not in 3d. Its that kind of movie. It starts out in 1380 ad? And moves forward in time. Not always sure where we are.

Choi Dong Hoon Great Storyteller
vebrianjonatics12 August 2022
The story was amaze me. Brilliant ideas come to director Choi Dong Hoon. He neatly packs various genres in one film.

I watch a lot of Movie of this genre, but most that films adapted from novels or comics. So I think Alienoid is a great film, considering that Alienoid is one of only few of movie of this genre that made from an original script, not from an adaptation of a different work. I hear It was he childhood fantasy. So Choi Doong Hoon is a Great Storyteller.

Fun to watch but really hard to follow
loloimdb1 November 2022
This movie has a great production value, CGI, SFX, acting etc... Are mostly high quality. It's packed with action and fighting scenes, and the mix of futuristic and ancient/mystical genre is fun.

Although, if you try to make sense of this movie, try to understand it, and if you like characters closure, you're going to get mad.... There is absolutely NO background to anything, whether it be the storyline or the characters (they just appears like that and you don't know sh... about them and then they just stay on screen for an hour but you still don't know who they are and why they're here).

This is really messy and chaotic, but not in a good way. It's like kids who play with action figure and try to make a story of it by adding tons of characters and events from their mind just like that for the fun but without making any sense of it.

Also, I'm not 100% sure the EN subtitles I had were very accurate...

Good animation, nice combination with martial arts and meta-universe, easy-to-watch atmosphere. However, music is distracting, aliens are not comfortable, lines are not funny enough.

Acting party
ayundaanisa6 May 2023
So MANY known actors in this movie, a-z listers but it makes a bit too much Time travel, jumped back and forth past-present, robot, shaman, magic, super power, a shifted-character, a good humor, a decent CGI, bit weird but enjoyable

The building story is good, it's quite easy to follow, the first half feels too slow and too messy for the second half.

Too many characters are shown in this first film, so it makes hard to understand which characters are important and which are less important in the story.

You got everything in this movie, it quite entertaining but too long to leave cliffhangers in the end.

Cross between MCU superhero & Jackie Chan movies
km_imdb-704-44034416 May 2023
Basically a superhero-type movie but without specific superhero, just a lots of Asian type cheesy sorcery, magic and special effects. As well as various fights, some in style of Jackie Chan and others in style of MCU.

It can be confusing and lacking logic in various places, but I liked it for creativity, special effects and amusement factor. It feels like it could be a great film if made by / upgraded to Western standards, but at the same time I can't complain about Asian style of film-making.

The plot isn't too bad, and again, it might've been appreciated more in a western film, while in Aienoid it gets overwhelmed by fighting and sorcery.

It does feel expensive and made on very high budget.

I'd recommend it for people who've ran out of things to watch and just look for something light and entertaining, even cheesy, but less horrible than 90% of trashy movies out there.

Muddled but highly enjoyable
skinzilla1 December 2023
Kudos to this flick for at least being original and highly entertaining. The plot gets a little muddled at times and there are some plot holes, but nothing to ruin the film. The acting was pretty good from all parties involved and for a long movie the pacing was excellent. This film also has some interesting characters that you actually invest in, which is rare nowadays. The special effects were nothing new or groundbreaking but they were well done and helped the action sequences. I don't understand how this isn't rated higher, although I assume the muddled plot is the main complaint. It reminded me a little of Journey to the West, and I loved the originality and flair of that flick. I definitely recommend this movie.
