In 1959, New York Times critic Brooks Atkinson heralded the arrival of a new musical comedy star in Once Upon a Mattress, a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Princess and the Pea.” Carol Burnett, he wrote, has “a metallic voice, an ironic gleam, and an unfailing sense of the comic gesture” as she “discharges” the music “as though she were firing a field mortar.” Meanwhile, her co-star, Joe Bova, as Prince Dauntless the Drab, only received mention from Atkinson as one of several “winning young people” backing up Burnett.
Dauntless has always seemed a supporting part, inevitably overshadowed by Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, one of musical theater’s most boisterous, irrepressible heroines. But Michael Urie, playing Dauntless in the new Broadway revival of Once Upon a Mattress, a transfer of the Encores! production that opened in January for a two-week run at New York City Center, reveals that this...

Some television shows we miss the most have only lasted one season.
Many of these series found their way into our hearts because of their emotional heart or their wit.
Some we’ve loved for decades, and others are newer favorites, but the TV Fanatic staff wished that many of these shows had gotten better resolutions or a fairer chance.
There are so many one-season wonders that never received a fair chance.
While we’d love to showcase all of them, here are nine that remain in our hearts.

A version of this story about Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Five seasons of Amazon’s pop-culture-reveling hit “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has yielded more stars rising than bagel dough, but possibly none more so than show composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore. The duo, who met at Northwestern and mentored with “The Muppet Show” veteran and multiple Emmy winner Larry Grossman, are responsible for pretty much any piece of music you hear that isn’t from someone’s songbook, and like other efforts from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, you can bet musical numbers are going to be part of the deal.
“We did actually we were set up on a sort of blind date with them about close to 10 years ago now,” Mizer says. “We’d been writing a stage musical...

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ended its illustrious run on Amazon after five seasons. During its tenure on the streaming platform, the series amassed multiple awards. In many ways, it was held up as the epitome of success in the streaming world. When the announcement was made that the series would end, fans assumed creator Amy Sherman-Palladino was ready to call it a day. As it turns out, she was not. In a recent interview, the famed showrunner blamed “the orcs” for the end of Maisel. She was clearly referring to the production of Rings of Power. The series, the most expensive show ever made, premiered in September 2022 on Amazon.

For one delightful yet short-lived season from 2012-2013, Amy Sherman-Palladino's "Bunheads" appeared on ABC Family. According to Fast Company, the network was searching for their own version of the hit musical series "Glee," but Sherman-Palladino convinced them to focus on dance instead. The title "Bunheads" is based on an obscure slang term for ballerinas, and perhaps it was this niche perspective that led to the series' swift cancellation.

Exclusive: Succession‘s Alan Ruck is the latest addition to the cast of Amazon Studios’ film The Burial, which is currently in production. He joins an ensemble that also includes Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie, Bill Camp, Dorian Missick, Pamela Reed, Amanda Warren and Jim Klock.
The film from director Maggie Betts is based on the New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr. It follows a charismatic personal injury lawyer famous for his impressive track record and loudly unconventional approach who decides to help a funeral home owner save his family business from a predatory corporate behemoth. In a move to bring emotional resonance to a dry contract law case, the lawyer digs up an unexpected and complex web of race, power and oppression that forces everyone to examine long-buried prejudices they didn’t know they had.
Doug Wright adapted the screenplay. Bobby Shriver is producing for Bobby Shriver Inc.

I started watching "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" when it first debuted for two reasons: one, I grew up watching creator and showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino's other shows, "Gilmore Girls" and "Bunheads"; and two, the fabulous vintage fashion. As "Maisel" nears the end of its fourth (and penultimate) season, I'm seeing more similarities than ever between it and "Gilmore Girls" - in particular, the one pitfall that made the final years of "Gilmore" so disappointing to watch.
One of the delights of any Sherman-Palladino show is its deliciously quirky, borderline bizarre cadre of minor characters, set pieces, and side plots. However, with that delight comes one of the major pitfalls of an Amy Sherman-Palladino show: the longer it goes on, the more screen time gets eaten up by these flights of fancy that were more enjoyable in small doses. Brooke Bowman has been promoted to executive vice president of drama development and programming at Fox Entertainment.
She succeeds Charlie Andrews in the role, with Andrews exiting the company. The parting with Andrews is said to be on good terms, with his contract simply coming to an end.
Bowman was previously senior vice president in the Fox drama department. She will now report directly to Michael Thorn, president of entertainment at Fox Entertainment. She will be based in Los Angeles.
“Brooke has been an important and trusted part of our team, playing an invaluable role in helping shape and implement our blueprint to expand and diversify Fox’s slate,” said Thorn. “Supremely creative, well-respected across town and fearless in taking big swings, she is primed to take over the reins; and I’m excited to have her alongside as we steer our drama strategy well into the future.”

It’s always a letdown when shows don’t get to shine. Even worse is when a series shows so much potential, but gets canceled after only one season. Many of them go on to become cult classics, but we still have to wonder what could’ve happened if they went on for longer. C’est la vie.

Madrid — Spain’s government has drawn up a timetable of phased emergence from Covid-19 lockdown which sets cautiously estimated dates of May 11 and May 26 for the re-authorization of movies and series shoots and cinema theater re-openings respectively.
Scheduled as Phase One and Two of a easing of Covid-19 restrictions, dates depend on no second spike in contagion, Spanish prime minster Pedro Sánchez stressed when addressing the nation Tuesday night.
No dates were initially given to the phase-out. Those became clearer Wednesday in Spanish newspaper coverage of the government’s recovery plans.
Announcements of the potential lockdown lift on shoots was greeted positively by Spain’s production sector, though with multiple riders.
Spain’s exhibition sector used the news of plans to reopen cinema theaters to call, via trade assn. Fece, for compensation for losses accumulated to date, and in the foreseeable immediate future.

Just as things in Europe were getting really bad, they’ve gotten a lot worse.
Cinema shutdowns across Europe on Friday, in addition to travel bans and multiple film and TV shoot postponements, have left Europe’s film industry facing a perfect storm — and sent shockwaves across the whole of its movie industry.
They also saw some industry figures crying out for governments to implement measures similar to those put forward by France’s Cnc state film agency on Thursday.
In the latest lockdown, every single cinema theater in Spain closed Friday after Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez declared a state of emergency.
“They should have done it sooner,” said producer-distributor-exhibitor Adolfo Blanco, at A Contracorriente Films, who owns the Verdi and Conde Duque cinema theaters in Spain.
“We just have to hope this won’t last long because costs continue, even with zero revenues. I fear some companies just...

Movistar Plus has joined The Mediapro Studio to produce “Paraíso” (Paradise), an original series destined for Movistar Plus’ digital platform.
The companies previously joined forces on “Nasdrovia,” another upcoming Movistar Plus’ original. Laura Fernández Espeso, The Mediapro Studio corporate, told Variety: “Working together was easy because when the content is clear and the platform is on board, everything moves smoothly.”
Fran Araujo, head of content for Movistar Plus, added, “I believe in the talent The Mediapro Studio is working with, and Movistar’s key objective is to create impactful productions working with strong creators.”
“Paraíso” targets a young audience and features an equally young cast. The story is set in the ‘90s down on the Spanish coast, thus appealing to older audiences as well through nostalgia for their own youth.
Director Fernando González Molina, producer and scriptwriter Ruth Garcia and David Oliva head the project.

Midge Maisel is not perfect. She's nowhere near perfect. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on the other hand, well, that show is pretty near that designation. For three seasons, Amy Sherman-Palladino, the show's creator, writer and director, has woven the complex—and funny—tale of Midge Maisel, a 1950s housewife who takes her knack for telling a story with a zippy punchline to the stage. With what seems like an endless budget, Sherman-Palladino and husband Daniel Palladino have created a vibrant world with the trademark fast-talking, charming characters they became known for with past hits Gilmore Girls and Bunheads. Critics and awards nominating bodies immediately—and rightfully—took...

Nicholas is not someone who should be charged with caring for the well-being of children. Possibly not even a small, nigh-indestructible pet. Even the people who like Nicholas can tell within seconds of meeting him that this twentysomething is an inveterate narcissist with little to no awareness of the needs, feelings, or even existence of others. Flirting at a bar with cute guy Alex, Nicholas insists they have a connection. “I’ve barely spoken,” Alex replies. “I think any feelings you think you have for me are actually feelings you have for your own anecdotes.

It’s true: Younger actresses always get the good parts.
Such was the case earlier this year, when A Million Little Things was looking to cast the role of Chloe. Viewers had been told that the character was engaged to Jason Ritter’s Eric but had died in the same accident that left him in need of a heart transplant. Chloe owned a music shop on Beacon Hill in Boston; Eric has been running the business since her death.

Midge Maisel is “grabbing her moment and having a marvelous time.” At least, that’s what the Season 3 trailer promises, thanks to the quite perfect song choice played throughout: Amy Sherman-Palladino favorite Sutton Foster’s (“Bunheads”) recording of “Perfectly Marvelous” from “Cabaret.”
“This is the first of a million tours,” Midge tells Susie in the opening moments of the new trailer. That’s right: As expected, Midge took Shy Baldwin up on his offer to tour with him at the end of Season 2, and now she and her manager are living their dreams big time. But as Susie reminds Midge, “This is the big leagues, kid. Gotta start acting like professionals.”
From the looks of it, that professionalism leads to things like Las Vegas marquees with “Mrs. Maisel” on them, some more marital strain between Midge and Joel, and guest appearances from Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) and another Sherman-Palladino alum,...

Linda Porter was remembered tonight by the producers of NBC’s Superstore with an end card reading “In Loving Memory” at the show’s conclusion.
Porter died Sept. 25 at age 86 after a long battle with cancer. The character actress appeared in dozens of TV series and feature films, but was perhaps best known for her role as Myrtle in Superstore.
Porter most recently was seen in her recurring role as Cloud 9 employee Myrtle Vartanian in the May 16 Season 4 finale of Superstore. The fan favorite had recently been rehired as new manager Amy’s (America Ferrera) assistant after being laid off in Season 3, and then brought back as a customer-greeting hologram.
Since Season 1, Porter appeared in 35 episodes of the NBC comedy series, which is now in its fifth season. She had not filmed any Season 5 episodes before her death.

This week’s question: What’s your favorite dance sequence on TV ever?
Alan Sepinwall (@sepinwall), Rolling Stone
Look, there are surely more emotionally moving options than the one I’ve chosen. Mac’s interpretive dance about his sexuality from the last “It’s Always Sunny” finale was among the most remarkable and unexpected moments of recent TV. The year before, “Better Things” wonderfully concluded its season with Sam, her mom, and two of her daughters recreating the video from Christine and the Queens’ “Tilted” as a birthday present for Max. Anyone who votes for Sasha’s “Istanbul/Constantinople” dance from “Bunheads” here is absolutely right to do so — a great piece of choreography that was also revelatory about a character designed to be tough to love. Sutton Foster is the ostensible lead of “Younger” as a secret 40-something book editor and divorced mom who continues to pass herself off as a hip millennial — even as the Big Apple-based sitcom created by “Sex and the City’s” Darren Star just kicked off its sixth season this week. But her winsome yet duplicitous charade is starting to get old, especially when more and more of her colleagues are already in on her ruse.

Her randy sexual escapades with rival editor Zane (Charles Michael Davis) and author client Jake Devereux (Jason Ralph) on last year’s fifth season sometimes recall the adventurous bedroom proclivities of Kim Cattrall’s PR pro Samantha Jones. It used to be that sitcoms in the ‘60s had all sorts of nutty “what-if” premises that required a chasm-sized suspension of disbelief from viewers. What if an astronaut kept an attractive female genie in a lamp (“I Dream of Jeannie”)? What if a witch tried to pass herself off as an average suburban housewife (“Bewitched”)? What if you mother was car (“My Mother the Car”)?
“Younger,” the brainchild of Darren Star that is based on a 2005 novel by Pamela Redmond Satran, is by no means that outlandish. The premise only slightly strains credibility as Liza Miller, a 40-year-old divorcee and mother of a teen daughter, who is desperately struggling to find a job at a book publishing house after her ex gambled away their savings and house.
Alas, most recruiters think this oldster isn’t hip enough to deal with the latest trends in social media and wouldn’t...
