With only two months left to go in the year, we recently rounded up where you can stream the best films of 2017. Now, it’s time to turn to the theatrical options (and a few others). This month brings a handful of festival favorites from as far back as January finally releasing, plus a few blockbusters, and much more. It should be noted that Sony Pictures Classics will be giving a one-week qualifying run to A Fantastic Woman starting Nov. 17, but we’ll return to that when it gets a proper release next February.

The official lineup for the 70th Cannes Film Festival, which will run from May 18–28, was announced April 13. New York Comic-Con is a nonstop four day event with a whirlwind of comic book, film, TV and all other forms of entertainment news. The sheet magnitude of covering or hearing about everything seems daunting, so I’ve put together some of the biggest news bits I found while attending the con. Be sure to keep checking back as any other big news bytes start to pour out. For now see below on some of the biggest stories to come out!
-DC started the week with a bang, announcing the creative teams for the "Kamandi Challenge." To celebrate Jack Kirby's 100th birthday in 2017, they randomly paired a writer and an artist, and are telling a 12 issue story that takes Kamandi (The Last Boy on Earth!) around the globe. Some of the highlights from the announced list of creators are Walt Simonson, Dale Eaglesham and Kevin Eastman!

So Daredevil season 2 came along and pretty much made everyone believe that lightning can strike twice. Of course many fans like I were absolutely floored by Jon Bernthal’s performance as Frank Castle. Look I may get some flack for this one but as far as actors that have played this role I think his was the best. Well it looks like he did it right because Marvel has greenlit a spinoff of the character. Yes people we have a Punisher series.
Marvel officially announced the news on Marvel.com saying Bernthal would of course reprise his role and Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal,Casualty) would be the showrunner and executive producer. Jeph Loeb head of Marvel Television said this.
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil. Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing,...

If recent reports are to be believed, Fox is planning to bring the X-Men franchise to the TV in some form or another, doubtlessly hoping to compete with Marvel and DC's ever-growing stable of shows.
And why not? The X-Men are no strangers to television, with a surprising number of TV appearances under their belts. So what are they like, and what can Fox learn from them as it attempts to bring a new X-Men TV series to life?
X-Men: Pryde Of The X-Men (1989)
This 30-minute animated short was produced as a pilot for an animated X-Men show and mostly used the 1970s Claremont/Byrne era team as its basis, though with one obvious exception. Had Marvel gone ahead, we'd have seen a team consisting of Professor X,...

We knew that Marvel had been shopping around a mega-sized TV package to prospective networks but until today the details weren't known. Well, the deal has been struck and it'll be on Netflix where we'll see the next wave of Marvel TV shows. And based on the news that the House of Ideas issued today about their deal, the plan is to build a Television Marvel Universe to serve as a companion to the Cinematic Marvel Universe we've already got.
The four superheroes making their way to television on demand will be Daredevil, Jessica Jones (a.k.a. the original Spider-Woman, now a freelance sleuth for hire), Luke Cage (baby father to Ms. Jones) and Iron Fist. Netflix has agreed to finance and broadcast 13 episodes of each series, with events in all four leading up to a mini-series crossover also to be broadcast on Netflix, The Defenders. In essense, we're...

A while back I did reviews for two of Marvel’s anime titles, “Blade and X-Men,” stating they were the better of the four. I’ve recently gotten a chance to rewatch all four anime, and I still stand by my statement, but I’ve gotten to appreciate the first two titles a little more. With “Iron Man 3” just hitting theatres and “The Wolverine” on the way, I thought now would be the perfect time to do reviews of the “Iron Man” and “Wolverine” animes. Like the other two shows Madhouse took the reins for this endeavor, Marvel gave them a decent amount of freedom to interpret things as they saw fit, and so for “Iron Man” we get some influence from the feature films, some classic comic nods, and also some pretty interesting re-imaginings. Based on a story written by Warren Ellis, and directed by Yuzo Sato, “Iron Man...

With all signs pointing to D.C. getting out of the original direct-to-dvd animated movie (or at least, making their footprint in the area noticeably smaller), maybe Marvel thinks this is the right time to step in. This wouldn’t be the first time Marvel has done original direct-to-dvd animated movies. They’ve achieved some measure of success with a pair of “Ultimate Avengers” titles, there was also a Doctor Strange flick that I quiet enjoyed, Iron Man, and of course, their Asian-created “X-Men” and “Blade” line of TV series. According to Marvel writer Jeph Loeb (via a podcast with something called Word Balloon), Marvel has plans for a new original animated movie starring everyone’s favorite skull-wearing vigilante, The Punisher. Not only Frank Castle and his war van (and, one assumes, Microchip as well — what’s Punisher without Microchip in the war van?), but also the Black Widow will be appearing.

I've never been a big fan of Marvel Comics. I don't read any of their titles on a regular basis. I enjoy all the movies, but fancy myself more of a DC guy. The Marvel characters I gravitate towards seem to be the anti-heroes and darker ones like Ghost Rider, the Punisher, and Blade.
I like all the Blade films and the short-lived TV series. What's not to like about watching a half-vampire / half-human who uses his namesake to eradicate the evil bloodsuckers of the world? Now we get to enjoy an anime version of the vampire hunter's adventures thanks to Marvel and Japan's Madhouse.

Marvel’s attempt to bring their characters into the world of anime didn’t fare terribly well as four series from Madhouse arrived and sank without much of a ripple. Conceived and vaguely interconnected from Warren Ellis, the projects had noble goals but failed to excite or even tell great stories.
You may have seen them on G4 since they weren’t important enough for the major animation channels or you might have caught Iron Man and X-Men when Sony Home Entertainment released them a few months back. Coming Tuesday are the final two, Blade and Wolverine, and these are no stronger than their predecessors. On the one hand, the color palette is nicely chosen to lend atmosphere to Blade, but then the animation is so stiff and limited vampires and people alike seem to be moving through sludge.

Beware of Spoilers if you haven’t caught up on Sons of Anarchy, but I have some exciting news to share. There are casting news and then there are Sons of Anarchy casting news, and perhaps none as big as the crucial role of ex-drug lord Damon Pope. In the Season 4 finale, we saw Pope’s daughter murdered by Tig and that act of violence is sure to wreak havoc for Jax and Samcro for Season 5.
On May 12, creator Kurt Sutter tweeted this out to his fans:

Marvel animation has never been a high point of their multimedia outreach but last year G4 aired four Marvel Anime series (X-Men, Iron Man, Blade and Wolverine), taking the beauty of the animation from Japan and the lively characters of Marvel’s mutant superteam, the X-Men. Unfortunately G4 doesn’t have the biggest coverage so this now it’s been collected Marvel Anime: X-Men The Complete Series on DVD. The X-Men Anime team is largely the one used in Astonishing X-Men, and since Warren Ellis wrote both this series and part of that comic series it makes sense that he would use that roster.
There are twelve episodes but the story is split into two halves. The first is seeing the X-Men team of Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Beast and Professor X trying to locate a young mutant in Japan. They are still in the wake of losing Jean Grey (especially...

Marvel has been allowing the Japanese to adapt their characters for nearly 40 years now and the results have always been hit or miss. Thankfully, the most current offering is more successful than most. Back in 2009, Marvel announced it had cut a deal with Madhouse and Sony to let them produce four anime series based on Iron Man, X-Men, Wolverine, and Blade, which at the time were guaranteed film franchise successes. To Madhouse’s credit, they hired Warren Ellis to pen the scripts and help create an integrated, consisted Marvel Anime Universe.
The shows began airing in Japan on Animax in spring 2010 before finding a domestic home on G4 with the last new episodes airing earlier this month. In case you missed it on G4 over the last year, Marvel Comics licensed a quartet of properties to be adapted into anime for the Japanese market. Acclaimed studio Madhouse handled the visuals while Warren Ellis was brought aboard to craft twelve -part stories for Iron Man, Wolverine, X-Men, and Blade. In short, he helped design a Marvel Anime Universe and the fruits of those labors recently completed their cable run.
On Tuesday, Sony Home Entertainment is releasing Iron Man and X-Men as two-disc DVD collections. For those unfamiliar with the properties, here’s a slideshow for each. Our review will run in a day or two.

Marvel Vampire Action in Blade Animated G4 Promo
What animated treat features “light-speed action and ambitious storytelling”? Why, it’s Blade. G4, in conjunction with Marvel, has created an all new anime adventure featuring the half-undead hero. This isn’t a movie, vampire hunter fans, it is a Blade series! We have a spell-binding promo just for you, so check it out. Just watch out for the exploding stake.
Blade is, of course, a Marvel super hero known as a Daywalker. He was born as a half human and half vampire because his mother was bitten while pregnant with him. In this new series, Blade will visit Japan and chase after Deacon Frost, the infamous vampire who killed his mother. Blade will also come across a group known only as “Existence”. The vampire members of this group have been “modified” by Frost. That means even more danger than usual for our hero.

It takes decades to build up a great superhero, but only one bad movie to tear him down. Andrew explores the downside of comic book adaptations…
Picture the scene: a high street book store. A man loiters near a bookshelf, scanning it for new strains of reading matter. He stoops down and starts flicking through the bottom shelf, his fingers brushing a Jeph Loeb title published by Marvel. Recoiling, he stands up and notices all three trade paperbacks of Paul Cornell's run of Captain Britain. He picks up Hell Comes To Birmingham and flicks through it. Then his face creases into a mask of confusion, consternation and concern. He turns to his friend, holds the book aloft and says, “What the hell is Blade doing in a comic book?”
The Blade movies are more successful than the comics to the extent that even a fan can be unaware of the character's origins.

Guillermo del Toro reached out to his fans on a fan site and left an interesting comment regarding the Hulk TV series he's currently working on for Marvel an ABC. He gives us some insight on what kind of character the Hulk is going to be in the series, and it sounds like it's going to focus more on the monster aspect of the character.
We've been coming up with an angle that is really strong. I am a fan of Peter David, Pak and Loeb but I like very much what individual writers and artists have done through the decades. I only gravitate to "monster" superheroes- (Blade, Hellboy, Deadman, Hulk-) because I have no interest on the straight ones -even when I've been offered the keys to the kingdom.

Scott Porter is to voice Cyclops, Heroes actor Milo Ventimigilia will be heard as the voice of Wolverine, Jb Blanc will be Russian baddie Omega Red and Gwendoline Yeo will play Wolverine's lover Mariko.
Porter (pictured) has been in Friday Night Lights, Caprica and the Wachowskis' Speed Racer film. He was also on a shortlist for the role of Captain America.

It’s been about a year since Marvel announced they were rocking out four Anime mini-series’ based on their most well known properties; Wolverine, Iron Man, Blade and The X-Men. A full year since Internet Jesus Warren Ellis was revealed as the man who would be outlining the four shows. A full year since we discovered that it would be animated by Madhouse, the studio behind a bunch of the recent Marvel and DC direct-to-video animated movies, not to mention Paprika and Ninja Scroll.
With that mix they surely can’t have gone wrong… But there’s been a lot of ‘meh’ in the press about them since the Americans got a preview last week but we very much enjoyed the new Wolverine series, and I sat down with the first episodes of Iron Man series to report back on whether it’s worth the wait.

Marvel Studios has reacquired film rights to the characters of Blade and The Punisher according to Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada. He announced this during his Cup O’ Joe panel during Comic-Con International, but cautioned the audience that this did not mean either was being put into active production.
