Ahead of the film’s world premiere at Fantasia this summer, the next film from The Adams Family has received a release date this week.
Shudder will premiere Hell Hole on August 23, Rue Morgue first reported.
Fantasia previews, “A road trip through Canadian oil fields conjured up fantasies of secrets deep in the dirt for the Adams family, and inspired them to create Hell Hole, an indie rock-n-roll monster movie set at a far-away fracking site.
“Known for their DIY ethos, John and Lulu Adams and Toby Poser, partnering with Shudder, have joined the team behind The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and FX legend Todd Masters to shoot their latest in Serbia with a local cast and crew.
“Absurd, mutinous, and transgressively comical, Hell Hole is old-school sci-fi horror, yet in typical family fashion, they subvert the genre with textures of biological and environmental horror in tandem with...

Jayro Bustamente's Rita Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
The Fantasia International Film Festival likes to tease, and as usual, it's revealing its line-up slowly this year, with the first tranche of titles going public today. New works by Nobuhiro Yamashita (Confession), Shinji Araki (Penalty Loop) and the Adams Family (Hell Hole), it's promising to be a thrilling event.
Back at the the Concordia Hall and Ja de Sève cinemas in Montreal for its 28th edition, the festival has attracted some highly anticipated films. Jayro Bustamente's Rita draws on Guatemalan myth and the tragic events at the Virgen de La Asunción children's home in 2017 (previously addressed in Oscar-nominated short Saria) to explore the wider social and existential import of the mistreatment of children. Chris Stuckmann's Shelby Oaks tells the haunting story of one woman's search for her missing sister and her gradual realisation that their childhood invisible friend might have been something real and dangerous.

Yellow Veil Pictures is kicking off EFM sales on the Shudder Original Film Hell Hole, the latest feature from the Adams Family filmmakers behind Hellbender and Where The Devil Roams.
John Adams and Toby Poser co-directed, co-wrote with Lulu Adams, and star in the feature, which is in post after wrapping production in Serbia.
Hell Hole takes place in Serbia’s Rtanj mountain valley as an American-led fracking crew uncovers a living French soldier frozen in time from a Napoleonic campaign.
When a parasitic monster springs from the soldier’s body it wreaks havoc among the terrified crew looking for a new host to inhabit.

Emerging on the international cinema scene with a trio of tender yet emotionally exacting features in Violet, Hellhole, and Ghost Tropic, Belgian director Bas Devos has turned a new leaf with Here. The Berlinale prizewinner is a moviegoing experience as gorgeous as it is tranquil, following Stefan (Stefan Gota), a Romanian worker who begins forming connections with both nature and a bryologist named Shuxiu (Liyo Gong). The simplicity of the narrative is one of the film’s strong suits, Devos luxuriating in the gestures on display, from gifting soup to uncovering the ground beneath your feet.
I caught up with Devos at the U.S. premiere of Here at the 61st New York Film Festival, where we discussed the origins of the project, the film’s strong visual language, exuding a sense of compassion, the strange power of moss, and more. Ahead of the film’s theatrical run beginning this...

Alone at dusk in his Brussels apartment, Stefan, a gentle Romanian construction worker, speaks a few words as if to try them on for size. “This is my home,” he says, unconvinced and unconvincing. In Stefan Gota’s subdued and graceful performance, the character’s forlorn ache is unspecified and fully felt. There are sleepless nights, long walks, bowls of homemade soup and heartfelt conversations, rich in silence, with people he knows and others he’s just met. And there’s the visual conversation that frames Stefan’s story, the interplay of windblown greenery and the sharp angles of urban high-rises.
Here is writer-director Bas Devos’ fourth feature (after Violet, Hellhole and Ghost Tropic), named best film in Berlin’s Encounters section and taking its stateside bow at the New York Film Festival. It’s a modestly proportioned movie of quiet magnificence, one that feels spun of gossamer summer light and rooted in unshakeable depths.

The Netflix recommendation algorithm is a boundless and ineffable mystery. On any given day, it will reach randomly into the Netflix catalog and haul out a film many had kind of forgotten existed or perhaps never knew about, and get scads of subscribers to watch it. One might recall the time in April of 2023 when the not-particularly-beloved 2011 prequel-cum-remake of "The Thing" topped Netflix's popularity charts. More people saw it that month than perhaps watched it in theaters.
The latest popular surprise from Netflix comes in the form of Bartosz M. Kowalski's "Hellhole," a Polish horror movie that was released on the streaming service in October of 2022, but is only now coming to prominence. Don't feel bad if you hadn't heard of "Hellhole" prior to this; few have. It's only by the caprices of Netflix that it now arrives in the public eye.

Exclusive: Cinema Guild has acquired North American rights for Belgian director Bas Devos’s film Here which won best film in the Berlin Film Festival’s Encounters section last month as well as the Fipresci prize.
The film revolves around a Romanian construction worker living in Brussels who is making preparations ahead of his return home to visit his mother for the holidays, not knowing if he will come back to the city.
While waiting for his car to be fixed, he meets a Belgian-Chinese woman bryologist, or expert in the study of moss and lichen, who is preparing her doctorate while working in her aunt’s restaurant. Her attention to the near-invisible stops him in his tracks.
Like Devos’s previous 2019 film Ghost Tropic, Brussels is inherent to the storyline as the director explores ideas of longing in contemporary urban life and the potential for enchantment that still exists...

Here's something to keep an eye out for, an American-Serbian coproduction called Hell Hole. Production began a few weeks ago, just before Christmas, on Rtanj Mountain in the Serbian Carpathians. It's southeast of Belgrada and appreciated for its pyramidal shape apparently. Geography and montology lesson over let's move on to the important stuff and it is hella important. Hell Hole is being made by members of the Adams Family. No, not the double 'D' family but the beloved Adams family who have made a name for themselves in independant horror with movies like Hellbender and The Deeper You Dig. That Adams family. The discovery by a fracking crew of a living French soldier from the campaigns of Napoleon in an isolated valley...

Character actor Cliff Emmich, who played major roles in “Payday” and “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” has died, his agent confirmed. He was 85.
Emmich’s rep and friend for over 50 years, Steve Stevens, tells TheWrap that the celebrity died Monday in Los Angeles following a long battle with lung cancer.
“He was a very special man and an underrated actor,” Stevens said. “He loved being a member in good standing of Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA and so very proud of his chosen profession. He loved being a cowboy and could ride a horse with the best of them. I’m sure Cliff would be embarrassed with all the attention he is now getting.”
