Two Eps In... More Please
alan_holloway_25 March 2024
My mind is confused by some people thinking this is a reboot of the old Richard O'Sullivan series 40 odd years ago.

This is simply a daft-as-a-brush comedy based on the same historical figure, though very, very loosely.

Dick (fnaar) Turpin is simply the framework to hang this silly show on, and thus far its holding the weight very well.

Our Turpin is a foppish goth who likes knitting. He lucks his way into being the leader of a Motley highwayman gang and they proceed to get into daft scrapes.

It's a very funny and silly show, with no pretence of realism or historical accuracy. That's fine by me. I'm not a huge fan of Noel Fielding, especially when he goes surreal and weird, but here he simply uses his natural charm and mild eccentricity to great effect.

A real unexpected treat for lovers of daft comedy.

Blackadder's little brother!
tim-Chinchen4 March 2024
Great fun comedy, completely irreverent, yet very watchable with the family! We were trying to fill a void left from the various Traitors options (another family favourite!) & found this.

Noel Fielding plays the part excellently with a very talented and experienced supporting cast. The first episode was a great introduction and kept my 12 year old very engaged (he's typically glued to YouTube shorts!!!!!!)

Looking forward to the next few episodes, I would compare it more to a cross of Blackadder and horrible histories than IT Crowd. The humour is more for a young teen audience (& their parents!)

Mighty Boosh meets Our Flag Means Death
julianbevans4 March 2024
Noel Fielding on Bake Off is a complete mystery to me. Un-funny and a silly add-on that adds nothing to the programme... which I really dislike in any case. However, in The Completely made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin he's back to the character that made 50% of the Mighty Boosh very, very funny. It's Marmite... you either love it or hate it, but here are a lot of the Boosh gags and personalities, brought back to life in a great situation. Great costume opportunities, great characters, daft non-sequiturs and some truly excellent guest appearances. Hugh Bonneville is inspired casting... as is greg Davies in episode 2. I absolutely loved it. Can't wait for episode three. Even the opening credit sequence is superb... what gorgeous animation! And Bob Fossil makes an appearance too. If you like Our Flag Means Death you will probably like this. I heartily recommend it.

Not a remake, not a reboot, completely original
bradbogle3 March 2024
Yes there was a series based on Dick Turpin 45 years ago, but other than the name of the main character there is no relationship. This is fun, goofball humor. Think Monty Python-esque. If youve seen Our Flag Means Death you have an idea of what you'll get here. If you are a Noel Fielding fan you'll have an better idea. If you are looking for historical fiction go elsewhere. This is hysterical fiction.

No, not all the jokes hit but between the silly dialog, physical humor and sight gags there is plenty of fun for someone looking for something mindless and entertaining. Just don't expect to be too deep.

If you love British comedy, you'll probably like this
shadowwalkerrock2 March 2024
Having never seen the original I have no expectations going into this show and never even knew it was coming out, so it was a nice surprise to see this available.

Right from the hop it jumps right into it without a boring and long prelude to introduce setting and characters.

The pacing is excellent with this show as is the set design, costumes and acting.

Every actor in this show brings their A game and even the 8 year old bartender character in the show is played amazingly.

Another reviewer called the show immature and bad basically ;but this couldn't be further from the truth, this show is up there with all the best of the newer generation of British comedy gold like The IT Crowd, Year Of The Rabbit, Dirk Gently and others like that.

If you're expecting some big budget blockbuster or to relive some part of your childhood then you'll probably just set yourself up for disappointment as this show isn't trying to be either of those things it wants to be it's own thing and deserves to be approached like that.

Loving it, can't believe the negative reviews from some others...
chris-966333 March 2024
So far, this has been everything I'd hoped for and lots more. The cast is an A-list of British comedians and actors that I always follow, the format and the individual stories are superb, and the scripting is tight, incorporating bizarre and surreal fantasy elements that could be expected from the writers and cast alike. Add to that the great cinematography and production values it all adds up to a great, watchable and very funny package. Some of the complaints I've seen about it being too British and of it being slapstick comedy are bewildering. It is British comedy, about a very British subject. I'm sorry for some that it's not Friends, or The Neighbourhood or countless other tired, formulaic sitcoms that we have foisted upon our screens, but personally I'm releshing this lovely combination of creative energies.

Liked this more than I expected
imdbxtrri2 April 2024
Our flag means death tried a bit too hard with its absurdity, maybe 60% of it landed. There is more of a (admittedly modern and inclusive, which some brigades will hate) wholesome inhabitable vibe to this show. It's like absurdist Cheers and somehow knows that both itself and the Cheers properties exist.

Noel Fielding is playing soft well. He's actually less cheeky than in GBBO. The self conscious sourpuss snark female who posed as male, the lovable doofus, and the non-binary giant all add, rather than just holding space. Craig the Warlock. The 8 year old aggressively Irish barkeep. Hugh Bonneville as Jonathon Wilde is perfect comedy deadpan.

Fun world, inhabitable. It's in the vein of the Chris Pine D&D movie (which I found very watchable and underrated) if it's married to Dr Who, I guess.

Gloriously silly
handymack4 March 2024
Nothing pleases me more than seeing the negative reviews clearly not understanding this isn't a reboot.

Typically British Humour that perhaps some may struggle with, The closest I can come up with from the US is probably Adam Sandler who's sillier comedy's irritate some but I enjoy.

Visually colourful and stylish, Lots to like in this delightful romp through the woods.

It's sharp, silly light-hearted fun.

The clue is in the Title.

Noel Fielding delivers his brand of comedy with a great ensemble cast.

Well written and performed, a pleasant Half- hour you can dip into and forget the world.

Bravo.

You don't know Dick...
Pjtaylor-96-13804418 April 2024
'The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin (2024)' is a British comedy series exclusive to AppleTV+. It focuses, unsurprisingly, on the completely made-up adventures of Dick Turpin, a legendary highwayman from the 1700s. The title role is filled by Noel Fielding, who portrays the eponymous criminal as a gentle, forward-thinking and charming ex-Butcher who stumbles into his newfound gang by accident but enjoys applying his own unique approach to robbing people. The show features a litany of appearances from some of Britain's best comedic actors - including (but not limited to) Mark Heap, Asim Chaudhry, Tamsin Grieg, Joe Wilkinson, Guz Khan, Hugh Bonneville, Greg Davies and Connor Swindells - but it actually isn't all that funny. To be honest, it doesn't get more than mildly amusing. At the same time, though, it's fairly consistent in the amusement department. Fielding makes for a strong, fairly unconventional lead, and the supporting cast (including those I haven't mentioned) all do a good job with the material they're given (Swindells steals the entire show, and Davies comes in close second during his singular episode). It almost feels like a CBBC show, in a way, albeit ever-so-slightly more mature (there are some swear words here and there). It's all just very... slight. That's not to say it's bad, of course, but it certainly isn't as strong as you may like. It's a fluffy, inconsequential slice of good-humoured television that would be far more at home on something like BBC One than on a 'premium' streaming service like AppleTV+. It's a decent time, but not much more.

Started decent but lost a lot of that steam in few episodes
blankyblank19 March 2024
I'm fine with completely made up adventures of Dick Turpin. He's a vegan crafter making his name as highway man. Perfect. Some silly fun. The problem lies in the overall emptiness of the show. Besides Dick Turpin not much of interest is going on. For episode 1 he's enough to set the tone but eventually you get tired of it (he's not that funny to carry the whole show), the world around him has to be interesting as well. I'm finding it hard to connect with the rest of the gang and the villain is plain and boring. 4 episodes in and the product seems lazy with jokes that belong in a cartoon honestly. Horrible Histories made one song about Dick Turpin and I think it's more worthwhile than this whole series.

Crack Fox Time Machine - Things are different in Noel's World
eatonsinbermuda5 March 2024
Mighty Boosh meets Baron Munchausen...! Vince Noir channeling the very best bits of early Black Adder....! Superb! Bit of a health warning though, if the opening two sentences there meant nothing to you, you might not be the target audience. If you aren't prepared to go along for the slightly surreal ride ... you might not be the target audience. Oh and watch out if you are expecting more of the same dull-eyed, soulless, filler, endlessly turned out of the streaming sausage machines because guess what...? You might not be the target audience! And lastly, if you are expecting a "reboot" of some other Dick Turpin show from aeons ago... you most definitely are not the target audience!!! But if you are up for some of the best laughs one of Croydon's best can deliver it's well worth a watch, because it's never too late to discover great content.

Fielding is quite brilliantly flamboyant in the leading role, clearly having enormous fun gamboling through a fever dream of 18th century England, and the series is lifted enormously by a supporting cast bursting with scene-stealing talent. Hugh Bonneville is wonderful as Mr 95% (just your average Tory entrepreneur) and Ellie White quite fabulous as the indecisive highwaywoman. The younger cast members are clearly also having riotous fun and the comedic timing of Kiri Flaherty and Samuel Leakey is spot-on. Tightly written, excellently cast and with Apple funded production quality, this is a wholly unexpected gem. Chapeau.

Not a ten!!
augleaner11 March 2024
I'm going to agree with the only other British comedy. In fact they use the same handful of people that appear on every other British TV show. Unfortunately their work on some of those other shows is much better especially Joe Wilkinson on Cats Does Countdown. He should have been used a lot more here.

It would have gotten a five or lower if not for the production values. The sets, props and costumes are really well done for a show like this.

Usually I would think of reviewing a TV show soon. It normally takes six or seven episodes for the actors to develop their characters. I just wanted to oppose some of those nines and tens posted.

So If you think something mildly clever or amusing is hysterical when it's done with a British accent this is the show for you.

If you liked the Mighty Boosh you might make it through
ian-596-8646413 March 2024
Wow what a load of tripe.

"Dick Turpin" lures viewers with the promise of Noel Fielding's comedic brilliance, but ultimately falls short of expectations. Despite hopes for a delightful romp, the series feels contrived and fails to deliver genuine laughs.

The attempts at humor come across as forced and predictable, lacking the spontaneity and charm that Fielding typically brings to his projects. While fans of "The Mighty Boosh" may have been drawn to this new endeavor, they'll find little to love as the humor consistently misses the mark.

Rather than organically blending historical drama with comedy, "Dick Turpin" feels like a clumsy attempt to capitalize on a popular genre without understanding what made it successful in the first place. The result is a lackluster series that struggles to find its footing.

In the end, "Dick Turpin" disappoints, leaving viewers longing for the wit and creativity of Fielding's earlier work. While his presence may have initially sparked interest, it's not enough to salvage this lackluster production. Fans would be better off revisiting old favorites than wasting time on this forgettable misstep.

Thanks chat gpt.

If you love The Mighty Boosh etc you'll love this
Lis_G3 March 2024
Other reviewers here are completely misinterpreting this show and its MO - it is not meant to be a reboot of any previous Dick Turpin series with any serious plot. It is meant to be silly and ridiculous - that should be obvious from the title, the trailers and the first minutes of watching it! If you like The Mighty Boosh, Star Stories, Big Train, Horrible Histories, and similar shows of 80s style humour, then you'll like this.

Sometimes you just need a series to go to with short episodes, that entertains, doesn't demand much thought and gives you some laughs to just watch with a beer on a Friday Saturday night and this is it.

I love this show!
cpwilsoniii30 March 2024
I love everything about this show. The cast, setting/atmosphere, costumes, humor, and seeing Noel Fielding perform (I'm only familiar with him from Mighty Boosh and IT Crowd). Oh, and the music and opening theme/credits really add to the experience. I'm completely sold on this show.

The guest stars have been pretty great too. Special mention to Jessica Hynes' Reddlehag character. I had no idea it was her and she is an immense joy to watch in this. Hugh Bonneville's thief taker general character is also great fun.

Only downside was having to subscribe to another streaming service to view this (Apple+), although that may just be what it takes for shows like this to exist. If that's the case, I will be around for more if more of this show gets made.

If you need a laugh, this will deliver!!!!
picman-595624 March 2024
I could say a lot about this, but you need to watch it yourself.

It is fun, witty and just what you need, when you need to laugh and have fun. Dick and Jack Sparrow could have been brothers and I think that you could put the two together, in a new movie....would that be interesting?

The negative reviews are from people that have no basic sense of humor. I don't know how you could not find this series amusing.

The casting and acting is great and the writers do a good job as well.

Just sit back and enjoy it, I guarantee that you will walk away with a smile on your face and anticipating the next episode.

Couldn't get through half an episode
reddeliuzza8 March 2024
I was really excited about this after someone labelled it the lost brother of 'Our flag means death'. Well, it is NOT! It is also has nothing to do with Blackadder or any other great British classics. The jokes are nowhere near as smart or funny, the story seems forced and the acting is rather dull. I think I almost laughed once, like you'd laugh at a 5 year-old's joke, to satisfy them rather than because it was actually funny.

The only reason I am not scoring it even less is because the premise is good, shame about the execution. Seems like Apple just wanted to jump on the band wagon of historical comedy, by just hiring some big names.

It was so awful I couldn't watch more than half an episode, and then regretted wasting even that little precious time.

If you love British comedy... spend your time watching better things.

If you don't get it, start from the beginning
bt-669168 March 2024
Quirky, light hearted fun. An excellent show for the whole family. If you don't "get it", you're not trying hard enough. Rather than fall into the trap of the same old comedic tropes, I found the humour quite irreverent, you never know what Noel will come up with next or in what direction each character is going to go. Great supporting cast and it's nice to see a show which clearly doesn't take itself too seriously whilst still providing the touchstones of today's society as a guide to the storyline. The scenery and costumes are lavish, the dialogue witty and not a moment is wasted in this romp. The jokes on you if you don't see the funny side.

Noel Fielding...
glassumbrellaart28 March 2024
Just can't act. An ensemble of familiar faces from all over TV do their best but the moment Mr Fielding appears this descends into school play territory. He has one gesture, one tone of voice and one glance.

The writers were, like me, seemingly faced with a remaining character count of 310 and rightfully decided to turn their attention to the cast members more accustomed to plying their trade selling elasticated trousers and dubious cleaning products. Having said all that the best lines were reserved for the eight year old who delivered them with the finesse and maturity of which Mr Fielding can only dream. Stick to upsetting people up to their armpits in flour and butter, pet, and please stop upsetting me.

Never try and go on a solo mission on your own.
tcastignetti8 April 2024
The great Noel Fielding! The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin Is another great example of the fun and utter nonsensical whimsy that Noel brings to the screen. Once I found the show, I binged it completely in one sitting!

"I'm new school, and there's gonna be less violence on my watch.... Is there anything that I could've done to improve your highway robbery experience?"

From the start, I was again enjoying the silliness and fun I've missed since The Might Boosh! It's Noel at his best, and if you're new to Noel's style of comedy, you can't take this seriously. It's just there to be silly, fun, and there is no direction except everywhere. Noel is just that... Noel!

" All my friends got dogs and cats for Christmas, and I got a starfish called Roy. I used to take him down to the park on a lead."

You can't explain it, you just have to experience it!

Fantastic Fielding!
Noel Fielding never ceases to entertain and this show does just that! Fielding trademark humour is fully on display and the episodes are hilariously executed! Everyone seems to be having a blast here and the guest stars (and familiar faces from Fielding's past shows) are all a welcome treat! A definite throwback to Boosh humour and storytelling is on full display! A Great soundtrack accompanies this series as well! The show has incredible promise and will likely become a favourite to Fans of Boosh and Luxury Comedy. A fine return to form for Noel Fielding and his comedic talents! Stand and Deliver!

Who knows how I got here?
patannern10 March 2024
It began with Great British Baking Show, proceeded to Noel crush, google fest. Cut daily dose of thc from 100mg to 10mg. Previously discontinued Zoloft and not sure if I love Noel Fielding or if I'm going insane.

Found out about Dick. Couldn't resist. I hate Game of Thrones. Well, never really tried. I am a seamstress who has produced clothing for Todd Rundgren and Weird Al Yankovic. Upon seeing my purple shoes and tiny sewing machine, I was entranced. And here I remain. I could never get anything from Apple to work for me until NOW! I am an official apple tv+ subscriber.

Anyway, still don't know why I'm here, but it sure is fun. I do love Noel Fielding.

Bloody Awful
emanmb17 March 2024
This show was bloody awful. Did I say it was bloody awful? OK I see I did.

Oh my gawd this was just horrid!

Now insert, atrocious, bad, dreadful embarrassing. Ghastly. Grisly hideous. Horrible, abhorrent, abusive, annoying, detestable disagreeable, foul gross impertinent , irritating nasty, in place of horrid and you will get the idea.

I want to hit -10000000000 for a rating but of course we are limited so my rating of 1 will have to suffice. I mean, even some mediocre shows have their moments and you can watch it while cooking or something.

Not this.

No.

It is NOT funny. I love comedy and sick jokes, not sick jokes, intelligent comedy, and this is none of these. It relies on over the top "acting" to get laughs that is just so stupid to watch. Everyone involved must be just there for the pay day, (and who wouldn't), but don't make me watch it.

I am embarrassed to admit I have watched 3 episodes, but I'm not embarrassed to say I won't ever watch anymore episodes.

Fun Fantasy-Adventure series with a touch of Boosh
ElCinefago3 March 2024
As a fantasy fan (in my forties) I have naturally become very cautious when it comes to fantasy adaptations (2 good out of 100 usually).

I also should say that if you're a fan of The Mighty Boosh you're going to enjoy this show very much. It has the charm, the wittiness and the charisma of that series and a few of its actors too. Fielding does Arian a great job at playing his character (basically Vince Noir but in a sort of D&D setting) and everyone really does a great job at making it all quite cohesive.

This show will make you grin and laugh many times. The production level is excellent, the photography beautifully done and the acting is just spot on.

Open your mind a bit and don't compare it to the old series, it has NOTHING to do with it, and that is good.

Just allow your inner child a bit of fun and you'll love this series.

Utter garbage !
mark-982006 April 2024
Complete and unfunny garbage , how they get away with making nonsense like this is a mystery , being hip and trendy doesn't make it funny , who sits and decides to waste time and money producing rubbish like this ? , the mighty Boosh was dross but this surpasses it , about as funny as toothache . Can be added to the list with Miranda and Mrs browns boys as stuff to watch if you don't have an once of intelligence or a sense of humour , I'd rather sit and eat my own foot than suffer this vomit inducing nonsense again . I'm sorry for sitting on the fence still can't decide if I like it . Pass the sick bag.
