Title: Le Guetteur Director: Michele Placido Starring: Danieul Auteuil, Mathieu Kassovitz, Olivier Gourmet, Francis Renaud, Nicolas Briançon, Jérôme Pouly de la Comédie Française, Violante Placido, Luca Argentero. The established Italian director and actor, Michele Placido, defines his new film as the French version of ‘Romanzo Criminale’ (a popular Italian criminal drama, whose movie version was directed by Placido, and was eventually made into a television series). But the director’s high hopes don’t match the actual outcome. The cinematography of Arnaldo Catinari is beautiful, dark and overbearing, but it clashes tremendously with the director’s style of shooting, that resembles that used for television, with very tight close-ups. ★★☆☆☆ With enough opening jump cuts to give Baz Lurhmann a minor epileptic spasm, Michele Placido's steely French crime thriller The Lookout (Le Guetteur, 2012) is a Parisian pileup of supersonic, neo-thriller folly. Parading two undisputed talents, Daniel Auteuil and Mathieu Kassovitz, the stars wheeze through scenes with desperate gusto, intent on reaching their respective goals. Yet, while conceptually sound Placido's intentions may be, his latest sniper oriented release fails to really hit the mark. Initially posing itself as a cop killing romp, Placido's opening scenes offer strong promise with a clear lean toward Hollywood exoticism.

You do come across some intriguing nuggets when you’re wandering around the interweb and the teaser trailer Michele Placido’s crime thriller Le Guetteur (aka The Lookout) has done just that. The Studio’s PR dept describe it as a “high-tension thriller starring; Daniel Auteuil and Mathieu Kassovitz” and so far, who are to argue. The premise sounds superb, and being French it will no doubt be painfully classy and just a tad Dark. The Lookout opens in France September 12. Teaser at the link. Synopsis: Police commissioner Mattei is about to arrest a notorious gang of bank robbers, when a lone sniper, opens fire from the rooftops, decimating an army of cops and lets his accomplices escape. Variety [1] reports that John Malkovich will play Grandfather Kuzja in Siberian Eductation, which Gabriele Salvatores (I'm Not Scared) will direct based on the autobiographical book by Nicolai Lilin. (Stefano Rulli, Sandro Petraglia and Gabriele Salvatores scripted.) The book follows "the Mafia-like...
