In the age of streaming platforms, the balance of power in television has changed. Studio bosses started spending many times more money on TV series, cutting the number of episodes so that viewers could binge on the entire season, and investing no less, if not more, in advertising and PR than they would for a major motion picture.
Competition has increased, with popular shows replacing each other every month, sometimes even every week.
20 years ago everything was different – the competition was not so fierce, but it was also more difficult to attract an audience. Channel management had to keep viewers glued to their screens for 20-30 episodes to keep ratings from dropping. Some projects failed and were quickly canceled, while others stayed on for nine full seasons, like 24.

Some shows are big cultural hits and juggernauts, and some quietly go on season after season; maybe not a huge critical giant, but there are enough ardent fans to justify their existence. And that’s probably where Apple TV+’s “Trying,” a heartwarming British comedy television series created by Andy Wolton (“The Amazing World of Gumball”), lands; it has its fans, and it keeps successfully chugging along, though to be fair, it does have its U.K.

After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"
Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

After months of silence surrounding the 2024 Amazing World of Gumball movie, the animated film got an unexpected release update.
The beloved Cartoon Network series has been dormant for several years following the release of six seasons on the cable network along with two miniseries in 2019 and 2020.
That is not to say nothing more is coming from The Amazing World of Gumball. In 2021, Season 7 of the show was announced for the Warner Bros.-owned Max (formerly HBO Max service) along with a movie; however, since then, the studio has remained fairly silent on both projects from the animated franchise.

As the year winds down, it’s time to look back at Netflix’s biggest hits, and today, we begin by looking into what kids’ TV shows picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s over the past 12 months.
This list is compiled using FlixPatrol data collected from the daily top 10s on Netflix from over 80 countries around the globe. They assign points and values to each title that gets featured on any day. Their data isn’t perfect as their method doesn’t quite fully capture the complexity of viewership data, such as total watch time, repeat viewings, or demographic details of the audience. Also worth noting is that Netflix changed up its top 10 metrics midway through the year to favor views over pure viewing hours. That said, their data provides a pretty accurate snapshot of what performed best over a long period.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the continuation of The Amazing World of Gumball with Season 7, and it appears that a release window was announced.
The last time The Amazing World of Gumball aired a proper episode was on June 24, 2019; the Season 6 finale, "Inquisition," ended on a literal cliffhanger. Thankfully, two years later, a movie for the surrealist cartoon series was announced for HBO Max, along with a series continuation.
Unfortunately, due to Discovery's acquisition of Warner Bros, several animated projects were axed, shelved, or sold, with The Amazing World of Gumball movie being one. However, despite the movie being put on the shelf, the development of Season 7 of the cartoon show seemingly continued strong.

Finland-based animation studio Gigglebug Entertainment is launching a new adult-focused label and has already begun developing its first project, Variety can confirm.
Branded In Stitches and led by Gigglebug’s management team, the banner will focus on bold, experimental and offbeat comedy aimed at grown-ups. Contemporary voices as well as artists and designers from Gigglebug’s in-house team will be brought in to pitch adult-oriented concepts and work on projects from the new banner.
The first project from In Stitches, which the company are set to present at Mipcom next month, is titled “Soap.” The 20-episode series is based on an original concept by Gigglebug animator Sasil Leirana and is told from the perspective of a bar of hotel soap called Suds.
“When affairs unravel marriages, a drug deal blows up (literally) or a serial killer repaints the walls red, who is there to clean up the mess? Soap,” reads the synopsis.

The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" movie arrives in theaters this week. Unlike other iterations of the heroes in a half-shell, the "Mutant Mayhem" part of the title actually delivers in a way that no other "Tmnt" movie has before.
Previous "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies have mostly focused on Shredder as the primary villain. But the sequel "Secret of the Ooze" introduced mutant baddies Tokka and Rahzar, and the more recent live-action/CGI hybrids produced by Michael Bay brought villains Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady into the fray as well. However, "Mutant Mayhem" features a cavalcade of mutant characters previously only seen in the "Tmnt" animated series and comics, and they're all voiced by some recognizable voices that you might have a hard time placing. That's why we've got a helpful "Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem" character guide, so you have the answer ready when your grandma asks, "Who was the voice of Mondo Gecko?...

The original 1980s Ninja Turtles cartoon intro song described Leonardo quite simply as “Leonardo leads” and Mutant Mayhem is ready to expand on that. In the new film, the Turtles’ father Splinter tells Leonardo that he has “honor.” He does his best to keep the others out of trouble but is still a teenager after all, which means his role as leader comes with a lot of anxiety. Out of all the Turtles, Leonardo is the most okay with living in the sewer until he meets reporter April and discovers his desire to be a part of the human world… And his crush on April.

Cowabunga! The team has officially been assembled for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," and it's very impressive. The upcoming Paramount film hails from "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" director Jeff Rowe, who based the aesthetic on sketches he made in the margins of his school notebooks. Likely following in the footsteps of recent animated movies — which have become more experimental when it comes to blending 2D with 3D CGI — the film delves into the lives of everyone's favorite crime-fighting ninja turtles, bringing them back to the big screen for the first tie in a decade.

The Amazing World of Gumball is colorful animated series featuring Gumball, a blue anthropomorphic cat, and Darwin, an orange fish with legs. The show resembles a family reality show but in the third person. That means, it had the vibe that the audience was watching the day-to-day life of a family, but the family being watched wasn’t interacting (at most times) with the camera or the filming crew. It also featured a unique art style by casting some three-dimensional characters into a two-dimensional drawn background. Today, we’ll look over the members of the iconic Watterson family, the family around which

Exclusive: Australia’s Princess Productions is acquiring Irish firm Boulder Media from toy giant Hasbro, we’ve learned.
The deal is the most notable M&a on the international animation market for a while. It closed earlier this month and gives Princess expanded production services capabilities for its in-house and third-party projects and allow it push into development in Ireland. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
Boulder is one of Ireland’s largest animation studios, having worked on Hasbro’s Transformers and My Little Pony franchises and TV shows such as Go Jetters and Danger Mouse. Its sale to Hasbro in 2016 was considered a major sign of intent by the U.S. toy manufacturer’s desire to make and own more content. Hasbro later acquired Pepper Pig and Pj Masks owner eOne but is now focusing more on Hasbro-branded IP and has its other entertainment assets under strategic review.

Cannes — Top European powerhouse Studiocanal has renewed its global deal with Nickelodeon which will board Season 3 of CG animated megahit “The Adventures of Paddington.”
Marking most surely one of the biggest single title content deals unveiled at this year’s Mipcom, the Nickelodeon renewal for Season 3 comes as Studiocanal has also unveiled a slew of second-window deals on Season 1 after the title’s hugely successful global rollout overseen, like Season 2, by Nickelodeon. It comes, moreover, just months after Studiocanal announced in June that Dougal Wilson is attached to direct “Paddington” 3, the third feature film in the franchise.
Together, the renewal, sales and new movie confirm “Paddington” as not only the biggest franchise at Studiocanal – at a time when the production-distribution-international sales giant is looking to expand its brand activity, says Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh – but as one of the most powerful in Europe.

How did one oddball TV-Y7 cartoon portend a fraying landscape for Western cartoons in the streaming age? What does it have to do with a CEO strategy of cleansing out a repertoire of cartoons?

HBO Max is canceling yet another group of animated series and films? Must be a day that ends in "Y."

HBO Max Cancels More Animation, Including ‘Batman: The Caped Crusader’ and 2 ‘Looney Tunes’ Projects
HBO Max continues its baffling decisions regarding its animated programming, with six animated projects no longer making their way to the direct-to-consumer streaming platform, TheWrap has confirmed.
Among the projects that will no longer stream on the platform: “Batman: The Caped Crusader,” from “The Batman” director Matt Reeves, J.J. Abrams and comic book luminary Ed Brubaker; “Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story,” an animated “Family Matters” spinoff; and two high-profile “Looney Tunes” features.

It’s not uncommon to find many animated series in U.S pop culture that focuses on Greek and Roman mythology, like “Blood of Zeus” or “Hercules.” However, there are a few animated series whose creators choose to tell distinct stories like “DC’s Titans,” “Teen Titans Go,” “Gravity Falls,” and of course “Victor and Valentino.”
According to show creator Diego Molano, “Victor and Valentino” is a supernatural adventure comedy that seeks to put a spotlight on the mythologies of the Aztec, Olmec, and Mayan people — Latin-Americans generally.
The show is currently on its third season. In this article, we’ll tell you all that there is to know about the latest season of “Victor and Valentino” and a little about its characters.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau has released the full schedule for next month’s NewFronts as the showcases return to in-person mode for the first time since 2019.
Amazon, Meta, Roku and NBCUniversal are among major presenters returning to the NewFronts. (See full schedule below.) The series of presentations will be held in person in New York from May 2 to 4, with an additional all-virtual day on May 5. The Iab said it plans to livestream the in-person presentations from as-yet-unspecified venues in New York City.
The NewFronts, which have surged in popularity amid the boom in digital advertising and the rush to streaming, are an annual ritual in New York. This year, even apart from the emergence from the pandemic, they will look a bit different. YouTube and Hulu, two of the founding NewFronts presenters, have shifted away from the digital week and into the week of May 16, when broadcast networks and major media companies make their pitches.

HBO Max is continuing a steady roll-out in Europe with its second wave of countries.
The WarnerMedia-owned streaming service is launching in an additional 15 nations on March 8, this time targeting Central and Eastern Europe. This covers Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.
Christina Sulebakk, general manager for HBO Max Emea, says it has been a “cautious choice” to get the markets launched in Europe, where the HBO Max roll-out began in earnest in October with launches in the Nordics as well as Spain and Andorra.
Those countries were obvious choices as the company had solid streaming customer bases that were already familiar with HBO Nordic and HBO España VOD services. “[We had to] make sure we could migrate over that customer base and get them on HBO Max first,” says Sulebakk.

The BBC is to triple its investment in UK-made animation for 7-to-12 year olds over the coming years as kids chief Patricia Hidalgo talks up the potential for the corporation to produce the next generation of global hits.
The BBC’s goal is to air three UK original animations for this older children’s audience per year, up from just one as it currently stands.
Addressing the Manchester Animation Festival this morning, former Turner Emea kids boss Hidalgo described the move as a “significant increase,” which comes as the BBC delivers on “great content for this older target” in the factual-entertainment, drama and comedy spaces.
Additional animations will start appearing in around 18 months and in the meantime the BBC is looking to increase its animation mix through acquisitions and pre-buys. Last year’s content budget for older-skewing kids channel Cbbc was £58M ($78M), with £25M ($33.8M) spent on younger-skewing CBeebies.

Peacemaker has a lot to learn — but luckily for fans of the problematically heroic “douche” and “[a–]hole” (as The Suicide Squad‘s James Gunn himself has put it), he won’t smooth out too many of those rough edges in just one season of TV.

HBO Max and Cartoon Network said Tuesday that they have given greenlights to The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie! and The Amazing World of Gumball: The Series, marking the return of Ben Bocquelet’s creation after the cult animated fantasy series ran six seasons on Cartoon Network from 2011-2019.
Bocquelet will direct and executive produce the movie (it’s a working title), which features a script written by Shane Mack and is designed to serve as a bridge between the original series and the new one. The film begins when Gumball’s biggest fan finds the show’s missing episode and accidentally opens a portal connecting his world to Gumball’s cartoon world. Upon meeting his heroes, our super fan decides to team up with Gumball, Darwin, Anais, Richard and Nicole to save them from a nefarious force overtaking Elmore, while inadvertently unleashing a threat of their very own.

To understand the ambition, talent and artistry of the Irish animation industry, it’s worth watching Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers” on Apple TV Plus.

Netflix, Disney Sony, Cartoon Network Studios, Dean DeBlois and Aardman are reading presentations at France’s Annecy Film Festival — as 2020’s Annecy, even online, once more proves to be the biggest animation fest in the world and the international event with the largest Hollywood and now global platform presence.
Put together, Annecy’s latest big wave of programming announcement suggests that its move online will mean no world premiere of a potential Hollywood blockbuster – such as, in the past, the “Despicable Me” movie series. The BBC has appointed Turner executive Patricia Hidalgo as its new director of children’s and education.
Currently senior VP, chief content and creative officer at Turner Emea, Hidalgo takes up her new role in September.

The BBC has turned to Turner to find its new children’s and education boss, hiring the WarnerMedia company’s kids programming chief Patricia Hidalgo.
Hidalgo has worked at Turner for nearly seven years and holds the somewhat unwieldy job title of senior vice president, chief content and creative officer Emea and international kids strategy.
She takes up her new role in September, replacing Alice Webb, who is leaving the children’s sector to join Universal Music Group’s TV production company Eagle Rock Entertainment as CEO.
Hidalgo will run BBC children’s networks CBeebies and Cbbc after a period overseeing original shows including The Amazing World Of Gumball and The Heroic Adventures Of The Valiant Prince Ivandoe at Turner’s Cartoon Network.
BBC director of radio and education James Purnell said: “Patricia has built a hugely successful career in kids’ TV with a track record that speaks for itself.
