Some of these include Drug War (Louis Koo), Outrage Beyond, actors such as Choi Min-sik and Tony Leung Ka-fai, to Directors such as Takeshi Kitano and Lou Ye.
I do have a few favorites in this list and i feel best movie could go to Drug War and best actor should fall to Choi Min-sik (just brilliant in every movie).

Chinese director Lu Chuan presented his first film at Venice, received the top prize at Taiwan’s Golden Horses with his second, and won the Golden Shell award at San Sebastian with his third film.
With such start, I’d say he can only ascend further, and the films are quite a proof of his boldness when choosing theme and setting for them – as he goes from an urban thriller (The Missing Gun, 2002) to a thriller set among hunters on the Tibetan plateau (Kekexili: Mountain Patrol, 2004) to a black-and-white feature about the Japanese army’s massacre of Chinese civilians in Nanjing during the Second World War (City of Life and Death, 2009).
And then there’s The Last Supper. The story follows Liu Bang (played by Liu Ye), the first emperor of China’s Han Dynasty. It’s a typical story of how an uncultured, uneducated brute grabs power, basks in its excess,...

Hong Kong – Chinese filmmakers suffered a further setback at home this week, when Ang Lee’s Life of Pi reigned at the box office despite the challenge of two newly released locally produced historical epics. Life of Pi, which was into the second week of its run, took 160 million yuan ($25.7 million) from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, according to figures from China Film News, a portal run by the official State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. Feng Xiaogang’s Back to 1942, secured 130 million yuan ($20.9 million), with Lu Chuan’s period drama The Last Supper

Tai Chi 0 and The Last Supper: Both films belong to "official" mainstream commercial production. Yet each in its way is a fascinating occasion to reflect upon Chinese neo-studio system.
Tai Chi 0 (Stephen Fung)
Yang Luchan (wushu champ Yuan Xiaochao), a young martial arts genius, desperately wants to learn the famous secret Tai Chi art of the Chen family. With the discrete help of the Grand Master (Tony Leung Kar-fai), and through repeated beatings from the villagers and the Master's daughter (Angelababy), he comes to master some of the Chen art and ends up helping destroying an evil British steam machine that could wipe out the village for the construction of a profitable railway line.
Tai Chi 0 (the first episode of a blockbuster-to-be trilogy) may well entertain foreign and local audiences: manga anime oriented, displaying a cast of top-models, pop icons and kung fu stars new and old,...

I now have to accept the fact there will be several films showing at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival that I simply won't be able to see. I have gone to Cannes three straight years and this will be my third year in Toronto and of the six festivals I've never seen a line-up packed with so many highly anticipated films and today the fest added even more. Sending out the complete line-up today the fest has added three films to their Galas selection and 18 Special Presentations along with several Contemporary World Cinema selections, the latter of which includes James Ponsoldt's Smashed which is said to feature a performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead that may be up for Oscar consideration. The announcement confirmed Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master will be part of the Special Presentations selection as will Brian De Palma's Passion, a remake of Love Crime...

Terrence Malick. Mateo Garrone. Rian Johnson. Noah Baumbach. Joss Whedon. Neil Jordan. Francois Ozon. Joe Wright. Thomas Vinterbeg. Derek Cianfrance. All of these filmmakers, plus loads more, will be among those presenting new feature films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 6th to 16th. Of the 61 films announced this morning, Rian Johnson’s sci-fi actioner Looper will open the fest (a clear upgrade from Score! A Hockey Musical, to be sure), while the others are divvied up between Gala and Special Presentation screenings. Of note: rumors of Terrence Malick’s swift return to the big screen have turned out to be well-founded (barring some last-minute delay); his To the Wonder has been confirmed, along with a raft of well-received Cannes exports like Pablo Lorrain’s No and Mateo Garrone’s Reality. The most insane part of today’s already-stellar announcement is that there’s loads more to come,...

Hollywoodnews.com: Rian Johnson’s time-travel thriller “Looper” will open the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, it was reported on Tuesday in Variety.
Johnson made splashes at Tiff with his previous films – the high-school-set film noir “Brick” and the quirky con caper “The Brothers Bloom.” But “Looper” finds him working with major Hollywood talents Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the story of an assassin (Gordon-Levitt) who eliminates criminals sent back through time to our present day. Troubles arise when Jgl’s next target is himself (Bruce Willis), from a not-so-distant future.
The first wave of Tiff programming reads like a laundry list of can’t-wait-to-see features for the upcoming awards season. Ben Affleck’s back with the political drama “Argo.” We’ll get our first look at “Cloud Atlas,” from Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis. David O. Russell, Derek Cianfrance, Mike Newell, David Ayer,...

The fact this is only the start of the films announced for the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival is staggering. I don't even think someone's wishlist could have matched what we're looking at and there is still more to be announced. But we'll worry about what's to come soon enough, let's have a look at what will be arriving. First taking a look at the World Premieres we see the opening night film, Rian Johnson's time travel feature Looper starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt followed by the highly anticipated Wachowski sibling feature Cloud Atlas; Ben Affleck will bring Argo to the fest just as he did The Town; David O. Russell's The Silver Linings Playbook will have its premiere; Blue Valentine helmer Derek Cianfrance will premiere The Place Beyond the Pines starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes; Mike Newell's Great Expectations will also...

With the fall movie season swiftly approaching, it’s not a stretch to say that many of the potential nominees for the Oscars and other end of year awards will finally be seeing a release. This year is no different. Though we have had a couple of films previously released that may be considered as possibilities in the awards race (Moonrise Kingdom, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and my personal favorite, The Grey), there’s a lot more right around the corner. Some of these very films that many have high hopes for will first be seen by those living in Canada. Variety has released some of the upcoming films that will be making their debut at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Or one can simply say just Tiff. Of those films announced, quite a few of them will have genre fans like myself quite giddy.

2012′s Toronto International Film Festival is set to officially announce its initial line-up later today, but Variety let the cat out of the bag, at least partially; and it’s quite astounding. Most of our most-anticipated films of the year will be premiering at the Canadian festival, notably Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer‘s epic-sounding Cloud Atlas, Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will open the fest), Ben Affleck‘s Argo, Dereck Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines and much, more more.
Coming from Sundance, the only mentioned film was Ben Lewis‘ John Hawkes-starring The Sessions, while Cannes premieres include Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Pablo Larrain‘s No and Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. And with the picture already slated for an October 13th release, for some traveling film critics and fans, and those prepared to head to Italy, the Venice Film Festival could be where the film makes its world premiere, with artistic director Alberto Barbera suggesting a few weeks back that Anderson was heading to the Lido for the fest, which kicks off on August 29th.
With the announcement of the opening film due any day now -- it was on June 21st last year and today, the fest announced their lineup of rare and restored films that will unspool -- and "The Master" trailer reminding us that its one of the candidates, it seemed like a good opportunity to look...

It isn’t just a banquet but a historical truth.” The actors also unveiled each character photo from drawing straws. What's with all the new trailers today? Of course, any day of the week will see a good handful of new trailers jostling for attention, but few are the days that I see a good handful actually worth taking a look at. We can't possibly know yet how The Taste of Money or The Last Supper will turn out, but simply by virtue of the fact that they're directed by Im Sang-soo and Lu Chuan, respectively, I've figured that you, like me, might want to give them each a minute-and-a-half of your Monday. Simply out of curiosity, no matter where you stand on either director.
Here's another one that's been making the rounds today. In Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom, premiering on HBO on June 24, Jeff Daniels plays an anchor who, as you'll see right there, snaps in the very first episode: Network meets Bulworth. You'll also see that Sorkin...

While there is, admittedly, a certain amount of user-fatigue when it comes to large scale Chinese historical epics these days due to the seemingly never ending supply of them the pictures continue to be made because they continue to work provided the right talent is involved. And a picture that pits Liu Ye, Chang Chen and Daniel Wu against one another? That would count. And Lu Chuan's The Last Supper does just that. The early history of a nation unfolds through the actions of three heroes - Liu Bang, Xiang Yu and Han Xin - who chased their dreams of uniting a warring nation and fought through major milestones of the Chu-Han Contention years in the third century. Running between August 31st and September 10th, the 68th edition of the Venice Film Festival would be a dandy last edition for festival impresario Marco Muller even if he doesn't nab the likes of Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmaster, Walter Salles' On the Road, Fernando Meirelles' 360 and/or Zhang Yimou's Heroes of Naking. In his final year of contract, with approximately twenty-two competition slots (minus the already confirmed opening film from Italian res George Clooney and his Tiff-bound The Ides of March), this thursday's announcement should be heavy on items from the the U.K along with a robust presence from European filmmakers headed by Roman Polanski's Carnage. From France, we think that Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi's Chicken With Plums (see pic above) Mathieu Kassovitz's Rebellion, Yves Caumon's Bird, John Shank's Last Winter, Emily Atef's Tue-Moi (Kill Me) and Juan Diego Solanas...
