After Dan Levy first created "Schitt's Creek" back in 2015, he and the Television Gods rested on the seventh day, looked back at the game-changing series, and declared that it was good. Since its finale in 2020 left fans itching for more, however, Levy has attempted to fill that hole by staying inordinately busy. He soon lined up a new animated series called "Standing Up," he's maintained a steady presence on the other side of the camera through appearances in HBO's "The Idol" and Netflix's "Sex Education" (sandwiched in between a cameo in Disney's "Haunted Mansion" remake), and he's now ready to unleash his feature film debut as writer and director with "Good Grief."
As the first major project coming out of his lucrative deal with Netflix, "Good Grief" promises to tell a deeply moving and heartfelt story all about -- you guessed it -- processing grief. If the moody music,...

Returning barely six months after its 2021 edition, which wrapped in September, French TV festival Series Mania welcomed Jury President Julia Sinkevych, who arrived in Lille from war-torn Ukraine.
“I didn’t know if I would be lucky enough to be here tonight,” said Sinkevych to a standing ovation, with Laurence Herszberg, Series Mania general director, observing that culture cannot be insensitive to what is happening.
“The whole world is now admiring our resistance, the resistance of the Ukrainian people. But there is another battlefield, which is culture, and I want us to be noticed, recognized and admired on the cultural battlefield, too,” added Sinkevych.
“This [conflict] has been going on for a long time and there have been many episodes in this TV series. Now, Europe and the rest of the world should work together on its grand season finale.”

Even from the most casual of glances, this year’s Series Mania boasts a plethora of riches, including, just for starters, the latest series from “The Wire’s” David Simon, and “Vikings’” Michael Hirst and “The Responder,” starring Martin Freeman, which is already being talked up as the European series of the year.
The selection below may well not represent the best 10 titles at this year’s Series Mania. But the following drama series are certainly sparking large buzz or at least curiosity ahead of this year’s March 18-25 edition of one of Europe’s foremost TV Festivals.

It may only be six months since 2021’s pandemic-delayed edition of Series Mania took place, but the annual Lille, France-based drama festival returns once again but this time in its traditional slot of March 18-25.
It’s been “challenging” for the Series Mania team to pull together 2022’s program so soon after last year’s event, says general director Laurence Herszberg.
However, it hasn’t been hard to attract projects to the festival. In a reflection of both Series Mania’s growing stature and the buoyant state of the scripted TV market, the event had 331 submissions from 46 different countries to the competition program. She says Series Mania, which was created in Paris in 2010 and moved to Lille in 2018, is very different from a giant TV sales market, which she reckons the industry is shifting away from. Sometimes your dream isn’t much of a dream at all. Maybe reality sets in after you’re already well along the path taken in error. Perhaps the epiphany arrives before you’ve sacrificed the correct choice in order to choose wrong. Ask Scott Rollins (Ben Schwartz) and he’ll probably tell you it can even be both at once if you happen to have two dreams vying for your attention. For him it was a career in stand-up comedy and the woman (Eloise Mumford’s Becky) he saw himself building a life beside. The former invigorated him while the latter instilled a debilitating fear. So what did he do? Packed up a suitcase, flew to Los Angeles, and left everything else behind in New York. And now, four years later, he’s back.

Ultimately pleasant if slight, “Standing Up, Falling Down” arrives at that modest impact despite the fact that the major characters here insist on behaving in ways that are meant to be funny, but too often land more in the “obnoxious” zone. This seriocomedy, with Ben Schwartz as a failed comedian and Billy Crystal as a wacky dermatologist he befriends, is actually stronger in its middleweight dramatic departments than it is in convincing us that these newly-met buddies are really good-hearted charmers — as opposed to tactless misanthropes who’ve quite understandably alienated most of those around them.
A different movie might have actually explored that second, rather bleak reality. But “Standing Up” wants to be cute and heartwarming. That it eventually succeeds, more or less, pays testament to producer turned first-time feature helmer Matt Ratner’s adept handling, and a cast that does their considerable best with iffy material. Bullying is a serious issue. Kids who bully others need to be taught that it is never okay to do so, and kids who are bullied need to know that they are not alone. In a world where kids pay more attention to the moving pictures and graphics on the various screens that fill their lives, it can be hard to get through to them. Kids are more likely to listen to such a lecture if it is disguised as entertainment, especially as a film.
Standing Up is an adaptation of Brock Cole’s young adult novel The Goats. The film is written and directed by D.J. Caruso, best known for the teen-skewing Disturbia and I Am Number Four. It is solidly mediocre in story and production values, yet the message it carries is worth spreading.

Alexander Rodnyansky has been a TV and film producer in Russia for decades. His most recent film, the Andrei Zvyagintsev-directed drama "Elena," won a special jury prize at the 2011 Festival de Cannes, and he has wrapped the American-made indies "Goat Island," from D.J. Caruso, and "Jayne Mansfield's Car," from Billy Bob Thornton. His next projects, which he also is financing, are the Robert Rodriguez genre sequels "Machete Kills" and "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," both of which start filming this year. Despite his prolific output, Rodnyansky doesn't much like what he sees in the predilections of Russian moviegoers -- enough so that he has written an impassioned essay decrying what he describes as their "apathy" when it comes to confronting anything at the cinema that actually reflects the reality of Russian life. In Moscow theaters, the fantasy eye candy of "John Carter" and animated hijinks of...

The story of excitable, if journeyman-level director D.J. Caruso is a long one, with him starting off his career with moodier fare like “The Salton Sea” and the far less impressive “Taking Lives,” before eventually delving into young-adult-prone projects like “Vertigo,” “Eagle Eye,” and last year's “I Am Number Four.” He’s continuing that string of films with the Val Kilmer, Radha Mitchell, Kate Maberly, Chandler Canterbury, and Annalise Basso-starring “The Goat Island,” his passion project indie, which he's just locked and will be showing to distributors. But he won't be sitting idle for long, as Caruso has lined up his next movie pretty quickly.
Deadline report that Caruso will be taking the director’s chair for “Invertigo,” a sci-fi epic with a script by fanboy punching bag Ehren Kruger ("Transformers") and Bradley Cramp about a Nasa satellite that crash-lands in New York City, creating a “reverse-g vortex” where gravity on earth becomes inverted.

Having just locked the final edit on his indie family feature Goat Island, director D.J. Caruso has already entered talks to helm Sony Pictures big budget production Invertigo. Screenwriter Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) and producer Bradley Cramp (Lord of War) penned the Sony-snatched spec script that revolves around a Nasa satellite crash landing in New York City that unleashes a .reverse-g vortex. that inverts gravity, demanding a world-saving rescue mission. Now, I'm a big fan of movie science fiction that I can buy for the course of the narrative. No problem. But I am baffled by what inverted gravity would be. Are people drifting off the ground and just floating helplessly into space? Because that is absolutely horrifying, and I have no idea what kind of movie science scenario could right my new greatest irrational fear. But Caruso has shown skills with atmospheric horror before with ...

Update: THR reveals that Invertigo will be hitting on March 7th, 2014.
It’s been about nine months since anything regarding Mr. D.J. Caruso came across our virtual desk, but he’s coming back… with a vengeance. (No, probably not.) As Deadline reports, the Disturbia helmer has signed with Sony Pictures for Invertigo, a high-concept sci-fi feature scripted by Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Scream 4) and Bradley Cramp.
Our initial report was bereft of any goods on the story, so let’s get down to that before any directing business comes into play. As it stands, Invertigo centers on the effects of a Nasa satellite crashing in New York City — the creation of a “reverse-g vortex” that, as the title would indicate, inverts gravity — and the ensuing rescue effort to stop it. (I’ll just admit it right now: conveyed with the proper visual pinache, that could look rather incredible.

Exclusive: Big deal coming together at Sony Pictures that involves DJ Caruso in talks to direct Invertigo, a drama scripted by Ehren Kruger and Bradley Cramp about a Nasa satellite that crash-lands in New York City, and it creates a “reverse-g vortex” where gravity is inverted. It imperils the planet if a rescue mission fails. Neal Moritz will produce, with Daniel Bobkur and Cramp exec producers. This is a big-scale picture that was bought as a spec and is on a fast track toward production. Caruso last directed I Am Number Four, and before that the hits Eagle Eye and Disturbia. He just finished writing and directing Goat Island, a passion project that he made independently, and family film Brock Cole.
