If you’re in need of a good cry, we have some news you’ll be interested in: some big-name, big-screen heartbreak is on the way in the form of We Live In Time, a sweeping new romance starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. Watch the trailer below:
Directed by Brooklyn’s John Crowley, We Live In Time sees the pair meet when Pugh’s Alma accidentally runs over Garfield’s Tobias, leading to an intense love story involving cooking, children, and, it seems, cancer. It comes from a script by Nick Payne, screenwriter of 2021 Jojo Moyes adaptation The Last Letter From Your Lover and Toni Colette TV series Wanderlust, and has Benedict Cumberbatch on board as executive producer under his SunnyMarch banner. Pugh and Garfield may be colleagues in the MCU as Yelena Belova and a variant of Peter Parker respectively, but this comedy-drama sees them opposite each other for the first time.

Mma has been steadily catching up to boxing in terms of combat sport films. While there are plenty of action films that utilize the practice, boxing has been able to capitalize on more character dramas, especially since Rocky hit the scene (no pun intended). While there have been movies like Warrior and Bruised that have showcased mixed martial arts in dramatic films, the popular UFC brand has been geared more towards popcorn movies like Here Comes the Boom and the upcoming Road House remake. The producers of Hereditary are now set to make a UFC-based drama where two Mma fighters, who fight for their own reasons, find themselves on a collision course.
Variety reports that Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz will star in Strawweight as UFC fighters. The synopsis is said to “follow the journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One...

Oscar-winner and 2024 Berlinale jury president Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz are set to enter the ring for the UFC-based mixed martial arts drama “Strawweight.”
The film — being launched at the European Film Market by WME Independent and CAA Media Finance — follows the journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One is a young woman (Moretz) whose life is changed forever when she discovers her passion for the UFC, while the other is a former champion (Nyong’o) who is determined to reclaim her title by reinventing herself. Both want the same thing — respect — but only one can come out on top.
“Strawweight” will mark the feature directorial debut of James M. Johnston. A longtime collaborator of David Lowery, Johnston produced and directed second unit for “The Green Knight,” “The Old Man and the Gun” “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” and the upcoming “Mother Mary...

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

The Boys in the Boat, directed by George Clooney and based on Daniel James Brown’s best-selling book, takes us on an emotionally charged journey through the inspiring true story of the University of Washington crew at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. With compelling performances from Callum Turner and Joel Edgerton, this biographical sports drama captures the essence of resilience, camaraderie, and the pursuit of the American dream.
Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the film introduces us to Joe Rantz who is portrayed with depth and authenticity by Turner. Abandoned by his family during his formative years, Rantz embodies the spirit of the working-class student athletes who come together to form the University of Washington rowing team. As Joe’s personal and financial struggles threaten to derail his sporting ambitions, he soon finds solace in his coach’s fatherly approach as as his team qualifies for the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany.

Although his onscreen career is just getting started, he's already starred in a few very recognizable TV shows and movies. Augustine Frizzell is set to direct “The Invisible Life of Addie Larue,” a feature film adaptation of V.E. Schwab’s fantasy novel.
Frizzell will also write the script with her husband, filmmaker David Lowery. Schwab was initially on board to pen the screenplay from an initial draft by Britt Poulton and Dan Madison Savage. Though she’s no longer adapting her words for the big screen, Schwab will remain involved on the project as a producer.

The canned British character study “Mogul Mowgli” disappoints on a few levels, especially given its admirable focus on authenticity and cultural identity in a kitchen-sink drama about Zed (Riz Ahmed), an aspiring British Pakistani rapper.
Zed’s musical career takes a sharp detour after he’s diagnosed with a muscle-related autoimmune disease, leaving him to wonder what motivates him and how he sees himself. Ahmed, who co-wrote the movie with director Bassam Tariq (“These Birds Walk”), struggles to provide emotional balance to his symbolically freighted role, but even he can’t enhance such thin material.
For starters: Zed’s physical deterioration reflects only his creators’ lack of vision. At one point, a neurologist tells Zed that “Your body can’t recognize itself, so it’s attacking itself.” And as if that wasn’t sufficiently on the nose, the neurologist also suggests the Zed’s condition is probably hereditary, which leads...

If the last letter you received from your lover was as banal as Augustine Frizzell’s new feature, you’d dump them like a shot. But mercifully for box office figures, we have all missed going to the movies so are inclined to be more open-minded towards snarky men spouting cliches and the women who love them. As long as their dramas play out on the big screen.
At first glance, The Last Letter from Your Lover is the bland, romance by numbers you find in large print novels on local library shelves or mildewing and neglected on a three for a fiver carousel in a caravan park shop. Safe and predictable with tick boxes for a neglectful hubby, Chanel suits, a caddish chap and foreign holibobs. However, this love story has been pepped up by the Soda Stream fizz of a parallel storyline to tickle your fancy when you...

Only in our wildest dreams would we get to share a Netflix account with Taylor Swift. But for Joe Alwyn, it's just another night in with his girlfriend of four years. In a recent interview, Joe hinted that the superstar had taken the next step in their relationship by introducing him to one of her favorite TV shows of all time—and he's already hooked. While promoting his upcoming film The Last Letter From Your Lover, Joe was asked to name the last series he watched. The 30-year-old British actor told Studio Canal UK, "Well, I've got a long way to go, but I'm currently watching the U.S. Office, which I've never seen before." As...

Romance can be a tricky old thing to get right in film. One wrong move, a clumsy misstep, and suddenly it’s entered into the realm of cheese, and from there on, it can be difficult to win the audience back again. The Last Letter From Your Lover is an unapologetically romantic film. The letters sent between star-crossed lovers are so full of adoration, and sentiment. Yet the film never feels mawkish, and the tonality is a great triumph – and what we discussed with the film’s co-lead, Felicity Jones, and with the author of the original novel, Jojo Moyes.
Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety below, as we discuss displaying romance on screen, the wonderful cast, and bringing this tale to life in such emphatic fashion/

As part of Netflix’s recent quarterly update, the ever-expanding streamer bragged that this last year saw their biggest animated film to date, yet another sign of their all-conquering versatility. But despite a concerted effort to increase in-house animation, the movie in question was tellingly not one of their own creation but rather a Covid acquisition, made and primed by Sony for a big-screen release but panic-sold when cinemas shuttered.

Photo: ‘The Last Letter from Your Lover’/Netflix After the discovery of a misplaced love letter, while researching for a feature piece, a journalist Ellie (Felicity Jones) goes on the hunt to uncover an illicit love affair from the 1960s in London. The letters take the viewer back in time and we learn about Jennifer (Shailene Woodley) as she tries to piece back together her life after an accident wiped her memory. As Jennifer discovers the letters herself for the first time in the past, so does Ellie in the basement of a newspaper firm along with the help of a rule-following archivist Rory (Nabhaan Rizwan). This beautiful film, based on the novel by Jojo Moyes, grabs the hearts of viewers and doesn’t let go until the credits roll. I’d be lying if I said no tears fell from my eyes at the end. In a week that saw three theatrical releases debut on Premium VOD, “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$19.99) won the battle. The ensemble action comedy sequel took first place on all four charts we follow, despite competition from “The Forever Purge” (Universal/$19.99) and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” (Warner Bros./$19.99).
Meanwhile, “Black Widow” (Disney/$29.99) announced an all-digital platform release for August 10. The unusual aspect is it will be offered as a digital download rather than a rental, with extras including additional scenes and bloopers.
More significantly, “Hitman’s” displaced “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount/$19.99) after just one week as top film. That’s a bit of a surprise; John Krasinski’s hit grossed as much as “Purge,” Conjuring,” and “Hitman’s” combined, and “Hitman’s” grossed the least with $37 million.
That also may mean that the “Hitman’s” audience wasn’t as thoroughly tapped. The audience demo...

The past isn’t just a different country, but a different movie entirely, in “The Last Letter From Your Lover,” a lushly mounted pair of love stories — one present, one past — that are faintly enmeshed but almost entirely disparate in tone, style and emotional impression. In the first, Shailene Woodley and Callum Turner fall hard for each other in an obstacle-strewn, 1960s-set romance of chance encounters, missed connections and moist-eyed rendezvous on railway platforms, channeling the vintage Hollywood melodrama of “An Affair to Remember.” In the second, Felicity Jones is a cut-glass hybrid of Carrie Bradshaw and Bridget Jones, falling only incidentally for the awkward archivist who assists her in piecing together the former story, before the narratives merge in a more British, neatly calligraphed rewrite of “The Notebook.”

Val Kilmer’s life and career is illustrated via the actor’s own recordings in an often curious yet incomplete mosaic
Who is Val Kilmer? Is he a former A-lister, whose idiosyncrasies and counter-culture taste made him a Hollywood outcast? Or is he an unbearable egotist who alienated the industry through rude unprofessionalism and impossible demands? One might naively assume that a snazzy new documentary called Val, that recently premiered at Cannes before now heading to cinemas and then Amazon Prime, might hold some answers, weaving its way back through a career of meteoric highs and subterranean lows. But the film’s blessing – unprecedented access to the actor himself and his own personally recorded set of videos – is also its curse, taking us close to him but still at a careful distance, like being invited to his house but made to wait at the door.

Shailene Woodley, star of “Big Little Lies,” The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “The Spectacular Now,” has joined Showtime’s upcoming hourlong series “Three Women” as a lead. The drama is a book-to-television adaptation of the nonfiction bestseller of the same name by Lisa Taddeo, who also executive produces the series.
The Pushcart Prize two-time winner and recipient of the Florence Engel Randall Award in fiction (2017) made her nonfiction debut this past summer with “Three Women,” published by Simon & Schuster. It tells the true multigenerational story of three American women— in their 20s, 30 and 40s —who suffered backlash for their sexual desires as well as their public and private pursuits of sexual independence and justice. The novel, which took Taddeo over a decade to research, report and write, remains in the Top 5 of the New York Times bestseller list for nonfiction books. The show is set to begin production in the fall.

Based on Jojo Moyes‘ 2012 novel of the same name, Augustine Frizzell’s sophomore directorial effort, “The Last Lover From Your Lover,” is a cozy romance encased in a labyrinthine epistolary mystery. Rotating between a rainy modern-day London and the sun-drenched French Riviera in the 1960s, the film follows two sets of would-be lovers. The film features a hopelessly romantic tone as it opens with an epitaph from Hemingway’s “A Farewell To Arms”: “Why darling, I don’t live at all when I’m not with you.”

‘The Last Letter from Your Lover’ Review: Jojo Moyes’ Time-Spanning Love Story Gets Lackluster Movie
You don’t have to be a sharp-edged journalist to see the obvious connection between the apparent heroines at the heart of Augustine Frizzell’s “The Last Letter from Your Lover,” including dull-edged journalist Ellie (Felicity Jones) and glamorous stifled ’60s housewife Jennifer (Shailene Woodley). Both women have been waylaid by love gone wrong, and can only hope to find true happiness by imagining — and then seizing — a new life for themselves.
It’s certainly a sweet concept for a novel, but one that never quite translates its disparate tones and stories into a cohesive cinematic experience.

The adaptation of Jojo Moyes’s 2012 novel, starring Shailene Woodley and Felicity Jones, toggles between two love stories and shortchanges both
The Last Letter from Your Lover, a Netflix adaptation of a 2012 Jojo Moyes novel, is pitched as a Russian doll of sweeping romances, a double punch of feeling for steamy summer nights in. The trailer practically gives the whole plot away – an awkward pair of journalists in the present fall for each other as they piece together an illicit love affair from the past through lost love letters, set to soaring music and the promise that “some love stories deserve a second chance”. The straightforward, unabashedly sentimental romance follows a string of middling original romantic comedies from the streaming service, from Set It Up to Always Be My Maybe.
