- [door opens, closes, Hamzad enters room where Belor and Chase are present]
- Young Faraz Hamzad: [Dari with English subtitles]
- [literally with hat in hand]
- Young Faraz Hamzad: I want to be careful... about what I know... about what I suspect... but I hope you'll be honest with me in resolving the two.
- Young Abbey Chase: [interrupts, intently] What do you know?
- Young Faraz Hamzad: You say that as if there are things you wish I didn't.
- Young Abbey Chase: You ask for honesty. Start with your own.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: I know that my wife... and my friend... aided the escape of a Russian prisoner. And I know... no one will leave this room... until I know the reason why.
- Young Abbey Chase: Don't do this.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: Don't? Don't do what? Don't ask for the truth?
- Young Abbey Chase: I'm committed to you. I'm loyal to you. I'm your wife. I'm asking you to trust me. There are things... it's better for you not to know. Once they're exposed they can't be unseen.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: [interrupts] *Enough!* I want the truth. All of it!
- Young Abbey Chase: [protracted pause, indignantly] I have for some time... been feeding information about our adversaries to the Soviets. It's weakened them and strengthened us. It's contributing significantly to our success. I didn't want it revealed by a Russian under investigation.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: [pinches the bridge of his nose an closes his eyes] I know. Though it was never said, I think you know I have known. There is something you're concealing... that you know I don't know.
- Young Dan Chase: [interjects] She's covering for me. He's got a lot of value to Langley. I figured I could repair my relationship with them... if I arranged to have him handed over.
- Young Abbey Chase: [interrupts] Stop.
- [begins slowly walking to Hamzad as she speaks]
- Young Abbey Chase: The Russians came because they're looking for an ore deposit in the Panjshir. It's believed to be of untold strategic value.
- [Chase sits and sighs]
- Young Faraz Hamzad: Why is this something you'd keep from me?
- Young Abbey Chase: Because I know where it is.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: Why is that something you'd keep from me?
- Young Abbey Chase: I worried that if you heard of it... you'd be consumed by a desire to search for it and possess it.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: Untold strategic value. What does that mean? Huh? Enough to change the course of the war? Enough to win the war?
- Young Abbey Chase: One day it will bring prosperity. When there's already stability. But today... so much influence and power all at once... the ability to refuse compromise is what makes tyrants. I love you too much... to see you made a monster. The path we're on... leads exactly where we hoped to go. You'll be trusted and bring rivals together.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: You'll not be the final arbiter of what I can know and not know. It can't work this way.
- Young Abbey Chase: [walks toward Hamzad, wide-eyed and emphatic] It's working that way and has been for some time. You're an impossibility. A man that can be everything... to everyone at any time. I make you possible. When you're cruel... I'm kind. When you're generous... I'm ruthless. When you're short-sighted... I imagine futures. This is a future that must be avoided.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: [turns away, rubbing his eyes and forehead, turns back] This is already slipping out of my control. Tell me where this mine is. Tell me... so I can tell our people... and repair the damage from today.
- [Belour obstinately remains silent]
- Young Faraz Hamzad: Tell me... because you trust me... to wield the power better than other men. Tell me... because if you don't...
- Young Abbey Chase: [Belour stands toe-to-toe with Hamzad, and gently under her breath] You could get us through this... if you wanted to. Trust me.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: Take some time. Take the night. Come morning...
- [Belour turns and exits]
- Young Faraz Hamzad: maybe you'll feel differently.
- Young Faraz Hamzad: [facing away from Chase] Come morning... don't be here.
- [Hamzad dons his hat and exits]
- Harold Harper: Hey, my career, my whole professional life is over because of this, and I think I...
- Dan Chase: My actual life is about to be over because of it. Pretty sure I win.
- Harold Harper: You wanna control how she remembers you? What are the fucking chances of that? It's the rememberers who get to decide when they're satisfied, not the remembered.
- Julian Carson: What's up?
- Mike: You remember last summer... the guy who came to the center... . Leukemia, maybe he was about 24, 25. He'd started a landscaping business. I remember him talking about that feeling. The sun in the morning. Tending to the world.
- [sighs]
- Mike: I found myself thinking about that today.
- Julian Carson: What are you talking about, man?
- Mike: Something doesn't feel right out there.
- Julian Carson: Shit. What'd you see?
- Mike: Nothing, but maybe it's the wrong kind of nothing.
- Harold Harper: [to Chase] That was Morgan Bote's man. Bote's been wanting this whole thing to go away from the moment it started. Now he's stepping in to end it himself, and using Adams... Emily... To guarantee that it happens. Bote told Hamzad to have a plane ready at an airfield nearby. If you're on it... he lets Emily go. If you're not, he delivers her to Hamzad instead. I don't know what happens then, but nothing good.
- Dan Chase: We had two tickets on Azur Maroc flight 31. The two tickets that you left for us. The two that I asked you for. Abbey and I, we debated whether we should ask you for a third. It was such a long flight. But... we decided it was too dangerous for you to know. No one could ever know. Hamzad, he was trying to find out if you knew that you bought two tickets for three passengers. If you knew that Abbey and I had somebody else with us on that flight.
- Harold Harper: Someone was with you? Who else was with you?
- Dan Chase: I never told you what happened that night. I'm not sure I would have known how. Been so easy to end it all. It would have been so easy just to kill him like I told you I would. So much simpler that way. But in that moment, I... I couldn't do it. I couldn't kill him in front of his daughter.
- Harold Harper: I used to spend a day with each graduating class at the Academy. I'd lurk in the background, looking for the ones that stood out. One year, I'm watching this instructor really give it to a young woman in his class. Kept calling her "Freckles." She was shorter than the others. I'd barely noticed her all day. Until I heard this instructor call her Freckles one too many times, and she walked right up to him, stared him dead in the eye...
- [chuckles]
- Harold Harper: and knocked him flat on his ass.
- [Chase chuckles]
- Harold Harper: That was the day I took an interest in Angela Adams. I've always treasured that moment, the same way I did... the birth of my son. But in the last few days, that moment has been haunting me. Raising questions.
- Faraz Hamzad: When you were a little girl, I imagined there was nothing that could ever come between us. You were everything to me. *You were everything* to me. When you were a little girl, I dreamt of a kingdom I would build for you. Where all you would see and all you would know would be yours. Then you were taken to a place so far away, so dark, so remote, so empty, I fear what you've become. I fear what was made of you. What was removed from you. What is left of you. How could there be anything left of you? I resolved to remember you as only a fantasy. A sorrow. A ghost. A ghost.
- [goat bleats, brakes squeal coming to a stop]
- Faraz Hamzad: A ghost that I secretly prayed... would haunt me once more in this life.
- [passenger door closes]
- Faraz Hamzad: Aware I could not possibly survive the experience.
- Old Woman: [Dari with English subtitles] Parwana is home.
- Dan Chase: Pavlovich, you know, he... he said something today. Told me some things about Abbey that I didn't know. Told me that she recruited him. She cultivated him years in advance, until she was ready to activate him to help her husband win his war. How many people we ever know that could play the game that way? Did we know any? When I called you to help us escape, I... I knew exactly what I was doing. I was protecting the bravest and most noble woman I'd ever met. Never doubted it. Not then. Not since. But suddenly, I'm hearing questions. Is it possible that... you know, she was using me too? Is it possible that she was cultivating me for an exit strategy? That's a hell of a thing, isn't it?
