I never seem to understand Kate. She has always been selfish and self-centered in a way that all she cares about is herself! Also she is demanding of others to pay attention to her and understand her, while she never does so. She lacks the power of will to lose weight and always blames everyone else on her mistakes and her weaknesses. I never understand this character, she does absolutely nothing to be a better person, coward is all she is.

2 good people simply drifting from each other
nahalymtl31 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I love this show, yes it makes me cry (in average one episode out of two). And I relate so much to the story as well as the characters.

In this episode, I loved that they are showing us how two great people (Kate and Toby), who were deeply in love, may not be great together anymore. They are understanding that they grew apart and may have to accept it.

I wouldn't blame Kate for being selfish, nor would I blame Toby, each of them needs to stay balanced in order to be the bast parent. Yes Toby changed for the better, but Kate has also managed to finally find her marks... they have the same main argument: they finally found a job they love and feel valued at work. Plus, Toby pointing out the importance of making good money in order to take care of a child with special needs. Plus Kate pointing out the importance of stability for little Jack (regarding the real challenges of navigating his surroundings), as well as the importance of family as a support system.

There is no need to label any villain here at all.

Let's just accept that (1) they were both in the same dark valley when they met, (2) then they climbed together for a while lifting each other up, (3) now each of them found their sunshine, but standing on different hill tops.

Who knows, for the happy ending lovers, they could be happier ever after with new partners, or, why not, remarry together (even after divorces and remarriages).

Another great epsiode

Warning: Spoilers
As always I love the progression of each episode of This Is Us. It is just sad that Kate always lives in the past and can't look ahead.

Toby may be too into his Job, yet at the same time he's worked hard to provide for his family and find a house for the family to be together.

Though sometimes in life I imagine we can just grow apart so I think Kate has just grown and decided she no longer fits with Toby. Just feels unfair for Toby, he's made mistakes aswell but obviously he has tried to provide and show his worth and also yes so has Kate.

It's an ever changing episode, we can see where their path is leading due to previous flashbacks but would have been nice to see Katoby stay together.

Always daddies girl

Warning: Spoilers
I love what the writer did with the last two episodes. Two different life stories stemming from one thing happening in early life. Can't wait for Randall's turn.

Don't get why everyone thinks Kate is selfish in this episode. Think it's one of the few times she isn't. She's thinking of little Jack and his needs, her moms illness and the life they've created. Let's be real, Toby isn't the guy she got to know and it's okay for him to grow and change, but sometimes people grow in different directions.

That's what's happening here. Toby is selfish about his work and basically gives her an ultimatum. I do hate how the writers have changed him so drastically, that he is almost not likeable anymore, but that's the only way to justify their marriage falling apart.

How can Toby afford a house in San Francisco?
interestingstuff22 October 2022
In this episode we find out that Toby suddenly got super rich and he can suddenly afford not only a nice apartment in downtown San Francisco but also afford to buy a multi-million dollar house outright. Good for him that he suddenly got rich by simply getting an office job.

Meanwhile, Kate in this episode acts totally entitled, self centered and obnoxious but then again it's not much different than how Randall and Kevin behave in most episodes. People talk about how Jack and Rebecca were perfect parents but all their three children turned out horrible without an exception so maybe they weren't such great parents after all.

Our Katy girl just can't catch a breath, all her life . Chrissy Metz and Chris Sullivan play so well that all I wanna do is give Katy a lot of hugs and tell Toby to get the f-- out, before each episode I'm always like' nope, not gonna get emotional this time' but fail every time. Can't believe TIU and Better Call Saul are both coming to an end. And oh Katy , I've felt like my future is blank too, but I'm sure I'll be alone real soon.

Why is Kate so awful?
mlyhancock30 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Kate has always been an unsympathetic character for me, but this episode just really blew it out of the water. She's so bitter at Toby for losing the weight when she can't muster up the willpower to do so, and she takes it out on him for everything. The poor guy was drowning in depression, and finally found a job he loves, got healthy, and is working hard to take care of her and the kids. He plans an awesome weekend for them, and all she can do is whine and moan, "Wah wah, I wish you were still fat and lazy with me." So ridiculous. Then she goes and calls her boss and unilaterally makes the decision to NOT move to SF, when she was JUST ticked at Toby for deciding not to take a lower paying job back home. Selfish selfish selfish. We obviously already know Kate and Toby aren't going to last, but I'm super frustrated that Kate is going to get married again, because she deserves to be alone and miserable. Toby is better off without her.

Writers blew this one

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure I've disliked a character more than Kate after this episode. Not sure what the writers are thinking trying to make Toby the bad guy? Kate is self centered and immature. Toby, what a horrible person! Works hard for money, plans a whole weekend for his wife and wants to buy his family a house! How horrible! Hopefully they turn this shipwreck around.

Why is Kate so selfish?

She has been portrayed as super selfish and it has started to irritate now.

The season started well but it feels like drowning in the end.

Kate and Toby didnt deserve this much screen time.

Here we go again with Im-A-Victim-Kate..
maketomusic24 March 2022
Its really wierd how Kate cant even see that she found a man who has the EXACT same character as her father that she adore, but still she acts like a victim all the time.. The writers of this show really failed with writing up Kate's character... She is so weak and pathetic... She could have been REALLY great but i guess the writers didnt want this show to be great.. they are fine with "A really good show..."

I hate Kate
tobyguinness2 August 2022
The writers did a great job of making a character so unlikable. She's a mean and angry teen and now a terrible spouse. I liked the Katoby relationship when they were loving to each other. Now it's like that part never existed.

Kate is so unlikable
geoffhuggard28 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What are supposed to be her redeeming qualities? I want to like her but jfc she just sucks and had zero character development throughout the show. Also, how in the world did Toby and Kate not have an end game plan? These two never talked about moving? The writing is just insulting. Do you remember Jack and Rebecca's fight? Compare that to this. They are forcing us to dislike Toby when he was the only redeeming thing between these two. Tldr, Kate sucks.

Kate and Toby
dpleska-4900924 March 2022
As this show is winding down (thank God) because it is getting painful to watch. Grow the hell up (Kate) seriously !!! It's always been about her selfish self-centered ways. I like Toby, I like the two of them together. I thought it was pretty damn selfish of her to call her boss! Good God this show DEFINITELY needs to end and NO no spin-off shows. Let it die peacefully.

Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert.

I already know Charles Kane dies. I already know Toby and Kate get divorced & she gets remarried in less than a year (don't understand what that's about). The problem with this storyline is we're spending half a season WATCHING Kane die. I don't want that! Why is it entertaining to find out bad news? That is probably a personal issue of mine. It may have been a fine episode had I been able to sit through it.

Toby deserves better
tmccheyne16 February 2024
I'm really, really fed up with Katy's attitude to life. She blames everyone for her unhappiness. Blimey if she had the start in life that most have she would have something to maybe grumble about. I was one of many to have had polio as a 3 yr old, my dad had pts and a nervous breakdown, mum had to get a man's job for a decent wage to bring up her 4 kids, I got sent away at 7 to an open air school run by stern nuns, not seeing my parents or siblings properly for 4 yrs... you either weaken or get strong...I got strong. Worked hard from 16 to 62 yrs of age. I married a fantastic man but unfortunately we didn't have children of our own...did this make me bitter and sad or blame what life gave me...no...I love my life..my experiences only made me deal with life's crisis and be flexible enough for change. I do not believe these three siblings could have such "trauma" in their lives. At least they were almost adult when their dad died, not young children. The writers should really let them grow up ! ...esp Katy...what the hell has she got to be so bitter about other than her weight. I loved Toby. She def did not deserve him. Punishing him for getting a good job, losing weight, being fit to prevent his children losing a parent. Working hard to provide, finding a house etc etc. She has always put her wishes and brother above Toby. He deserves a wife that will love him as much as he loves her.
