Debutante director Ramata-Toulaye Sy will join one of world cinema’s most select clubs when she climbs the stairs of the Grand Theatre Lumière on May 20 for the premiere of “Banel & Adama,” which unspools in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It marks just the second time in the French fest’s 76-year history that a Black woman will compete for the Palme d’Or, a glass ceiling that was shattered only four years ago by Sy’s French Senegalese compatriot, Mati Diop (“Atlantics”).
While acknowledging the honor, it is a club, Sy admits, about which she has some ambivalence. “I really hope that soon all this will be taken for granted — that we won’t be counting the Black directors, that we won’t be counting women,” the helmer tells Variety. “It means that there’s still something wrong, that there’s still something that hasn...

HBO has released a new trailer for the second season of its original series, "Avenue 5." The show was created by two-time Emmy Award-winner Armando Iannucci and stars Hugh Laurie ("House") and Josh Gad ("Beauty and the Beast"). If you haven't watched it yet, it's the story set about 40 years in the future aboard an interstellar spaceship. It's owned by clueless billionaire Herman Judd (Gad in a ponytail and some pretty wild outfits), who hired mainly attractive actors and models for his crew, so everyone would look good on the bridge and please the passengers. The ship itself is actually run by a second crew who weren't deemed pretty enough to be seen.
The titular space cruiser, Avenue 5, was supposed to be out on an eight-week cruise, but the death of an engineer and the temporary loss of artificial gravity changed their course. Instead of eight weeks, the ship would...

Gearheads are gonna be eatin' good very, very soon. It's been rumored for months that Neill Blomkamp was going to be directing a movie for Sony based on the ridiculously popular "Gran Turismo" video game series, and thanks to an exclusive release from The Hollywood Reporter, these rumors are now a reality. Best known for his action-packed forays into science fiction, Blomkamp's film will be based on not just the best-selling PlayStation game of all time of the same name, but also a true story inspired by one of the game's players.
Considering "Gran Turismo" is a hyper-realistic racing simulator known more for its remarkably accurate driving physics emulation and licensed vehicles, the lack of a plot had plenty wondering how it would even be possible to turn the game into a feature film. Fortunately, a script by Jason Hall ("American Sniper") and Zach Baylin ("King Richard") has the answer.

How much of a chatter-fest was this? Referring here to today's TCA panel on USA's Playing House, featuring stars/executive producers Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham. Two topics seemed to float to the surface: One, guest stars, and two, Twitter. The pair has managed to persuade…...

Like on their short-lived but long-missed Best Friends Forever, on Playing House, creators/stars Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham offer one of the most realistic portrayals of female friendship ever put on the small screen. It sure helps that they are best friends in real life. They discuss physical comedy, having babies, and neck-editing. Enjoy, because they sure did.On Putting Family Before Business: Jessica St. Clair: Jld! Thank you so much for doing this. Julia Louis-Dreyfus: Wait, a minute but I didn't get my baby. Jsc: Goddamn it, you can pick her up. Or I'll drop her off. You're in the Palisades? Jld: Yeah, just stick her in a box and put her right outside my door if I'm not there....

Fans of USA Network’s sitcom Playing House, and/or of creators Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair can rest easy, as Deadline is reporting that the channel has renewed the show for an 8-episode second season, following six months of speculation about the show’s fate after its first season finale.
This news is particularly heartening, as the show had appeared set for cancellation following USA’s announcement that it would be moving away from half-hour comedies and focus on hour-long dramas going forward. Playing House joins Benched and Sirens as the only three representatives of the genre on the channel.
The show’s seemingly poor ratings were a source of concern for USA. However, the series’ strength lay in its popularity on On-Demand outlets, which will lead to a unique distribution model. When the series returns, it will be premiering on VOD platforms Xfinity, TV Everywhere, and USA...

Back in 2012, which certainly isn’t long ago, NBC brought you Best Friends Forever, which starred Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. Best friends of a higher order, who now live on opposite sides of the country, are brought back together when one of them suddenly finds herself holding divorce papers. As they begin living together again, plus one boyfriend, hilarity ensues as they face life together, and learn new things about being adults, and what it really means to have a friend you know better than you know yourself. Well, something like that anyway.
Now USA is giving Parham and St. Clair another shot with Playing House, in what is basically the same show, except that we’ve replaced the boyfriend with a baby. In this version, Maggie (Parham) is pregnant, and Emma (St. Clair) is flying back to her small town home for the baby shower. Again, the pair were once best friends,...

USA‘s new show, Playing House, is hitting on April 29th, and the thus far under-promoted show has a promo clip that it hopes will hook you. Famous for its Character Welcome tagline, and shows like Burn Notice, Psych, White Collar, etc., that arguably live up to the theoretical standard of character focus, USA now looks to fill the comedy gap created by the end of Psych.

Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair's sweet, silly and totally unique Best Friends Forever was easily one of my favorite new shows in 2012. Naturally it was canceled by NBC after six episodes, leaving me praying another network would be smart enough to tap these funny ladies to shepherd another comedy, immediately.

As the USA Network remains uncertain as to whether it will rescue Happy Endings—probably depending, as always, on whether you love it enough—the basic-cable channel has committed to a couple other comedies that aren’t Happy Endings. The first, Playing House, reunites Best Friends Forever best friends forever Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair to play longtime pals who are reunited after one of them gets pregnant and she convinces the other one to set aside her own life to help her, like all good friends would do. The other, Sirens, is the previously reported show from Denis ...

USA has picked up a pair original half-hour comedies to air alongside its big acquired series "Modern Family." It has not, however, made a move to revive "Happy Endings" following that show's cancellation by ABC.
Speculation has been running high for several weeks that USA would add "Happy Endings" to its roster if ABC dropped the show, but it didn't happen as part of USA's upfront announcements on Thursday (May 16). A report on Deadline says a pickup for "Happy Endings" is now "unlikely."
The two comedies USA did pick up are "Sirens," a show about an oddball group of EMTs in Chicago; and "Playing House," a female buddy comedy from Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham ("Best Friends Forever").
"Sirens" stars Michael Mosley ("Pan Am"), Kevin Daniels ("Modern Family"), Jessica McNamee ("The Vow") and Kevin Bigley ("Game Change"). "Rescue Me" creator-star Denis Leary and "Wedding Crashers" and "Traffic Light" writer...

Still no word on the fate of Happy Endings, but USA did announce today that it has ordered two original half-hour comedies. Sirens comes from Denis Leary and is based on the British show of the same name; it follows three Chicago EMTs who are silly and immature. Playing House was created by and stars Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair (Rip, Best Friends Forever) as childhood besties who reunite when one gets pregnant. USA has also ordered a pilot of Love Is Dead, set within a firm that breaks up romantic relationships for those too chickenshit to do the dumping on their own. All these shows sound like they would go well with Happy Endings, no?...

"Up All Night" began its second season Thursday (Sept. 20) with some big changes -- Ava's (Maya Rudolph) show was canceled, meaning Reagan (Christina Applegate) is now out of work. And we also met Reagan's brother, Scott, for the first time.
Scott is played by Luka Jones, whom you may recognized from NBC's short-lived "Best Friends Forever" from last season, and he offers a nice, laid-back counterpoint to the more tightly wound characters on "Up All Night." He's also one of Zap2it's Ones to Watch for the 2012-13 season, so we thought we'd introduce you to him with this questionnaire. Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about the Upright Citizens Brigade veteran.

A pair of NBC series going into their second seasons have added new members to their casts.
"Smash" is giving Karen (Katharine McPhee) a new roommate, while Christina Applegate's character on "Up All Night" is getting a brother.
On "Smash," Broadway actress Krysta Rodriguez ("The Addams Family") will play Karen's "fun and spunky" new roomie. Karen presumably will need one after splitting with Dev (Raza Jaffrey won't be a regular next season). The character is an ensemble actress in Broadway shows who's looking for a big break, which makes it sound as though she has more in common with Ivy (Megan Hilty) than Karen.
Rodriguez originated the role of Wednesday in the "Addams Family" musical and has also appeared in the 2007 revival of "A Chorus Line" and "In the Heights." Her screen credits include a guest role on "Gossip Girl" and the Will Ferrell-produced movie "The Virginity Hit.

NBC’s Best Friends Forever may be gone, well… forever, but its male lead Luka Jones has found a new group of pals over on Up All Night.
Per EW.com, the actor — whose résumé essentially consists of the aforementioned axed series and an episode of How I Met Your Mother — is joining Season 2 of the heartwarming comedy as a series regular.
Jones will play the über-laid back Scott, the younger brother of Christina Applegate’s Reagan who, after going through a divorce, comes to town with his unruly 5-year-old son.

In another attempt to cannibalize British sitcoms that are already great, NBC almost went through with an American version of "The It Crowd" starring Joel McHale in 2007. Now, the pilot for the laugh track-filled remake has been leaked online in its entirety.
It's likely that the above video will eventually be removed by NBC, but for now, fans of the original British show can watch this 22-minute train wreck and be relieved that it never made it to air. Even though it features original "It" star Richard Ayoade reprising his role as Moss, we think you'll agree that it falls flat regardless of whether you watched the British version or not.
Along with McHale as Roy, you'll also see comedian Jessica St. Clair, whose own NBC sitcom "Best Friends Forever" was canceled this year, portraying Jen. Watch the video above.
