My friends Justin and Serena made a Christmas themed short film called Do You See What I See? In it they have killed or scared off a lot of my other friends from here in the Toronto area. Yep, the duo behind the adaptation of the novel Mark of Kane have been filing their time in the meanwhile by gathering more of our mutual friends together and killing them off in a short film full of holiday scares and violence. They just released the first trailer for it as they prepare to start its festival run. We have also included the poster and a collection of stills too. Co-written/co-directed by Justin McConnell (Skull World, Ending the Eternal) and Serena Whitney (co-writer of the upcoming ‘Mark of...

Skull World tells the story of Greg Sommer, an apparently well-known Canadian figure with the monicker Skull Man who engages in Larp-inspired warfare using cardboard armor and weapons. It's like Gwar without the silly charm meets Darkon, the Larp documentary. I think I missed the part where the subjects of the film explained the rules, but it just looks like a bunch of dudes running into one-another and hitting each other until a winner is arbitrarily chosen. Whatever, man, that's cool, whatever helps you sleep at night.

Box Wars, where people dress up in elaborate cardboard costumes and stage massive battles, is definitely a great subject for a documentary. The biggest problem with Justin McConnell’s (“The Collapsed”) new film, “Skull World,” is that it rarely gets beyond the “this is super cool” level of examination and analysis. Which is too bad, and feels like a missed opportunity. The subject is weird enough that it should have a movie made about it, and Greg Sommer, who is the main focus, is the kind of crazy, infectious wingnut that, as soon as you meet, you want to learn more about. “Skull World” isn’t bad, but there isn’t much substance to it, either. That’s the frustrating part about the film, you see how much deeper it could go, and you want it to, because it’s fun and fascinating, but unfortunately you get to a certain...

Justin McConnell's documentary Skull World just came out on DVD and Blu-ray! I got my grubby hands on the Blu-ray and would like to share my thoughts with you about Justin's film. But first, a story... Back in high school I worked at a plant nursery. One day, a customer asked us what we were going to do with a plastic barrel we had set off to the side. He wanted to buy it off us because he said he would cut it up and make armour out of it. He belonged to a live action roleplaying club that staged mock medieval battles. That sounded cool as shit. But holy heck, these industrial strength plastic drums are not cheap. There had to be a cost effective...

Guys in cardboard “armor” bashing the crap out of each other? Who doesn’t like that? Check out a Red Band trailer for “The Collapsed” director Justin McConnell’s documentary “Skull World”, which is due to rumble onto DVD/Blu-ray later this month. It’s pretty badass, if you’re into covering yourself up with cardboard armor and, as previously mentioned, doing battle, that is. You would definitely have to have a certain mindset to be into this, but hey, who knows, maybe you’re just weird that way. Personally, the only use I’ve ever found for cardboard was packing up my old T-shirts, but maybe I’m missing out… Greg Sommer is an enigma wrapped inside a mystery, encased in a Jean-Jacket Vest. An enterprising man in his early 30s, Greg, and his alter-ego Skull Man, are at war. Box Wars that is. Welcome to Greg’s world.

Featuring: Greg Sommer, Jason Pluscec, Shane Patterson
Justin McConnell's new documentary, Skull World, focuses on the fun but eclectic Greg Sommer and his alter ego Skull Man's Box Wars cardboard-based combat league.
McConnell isn't a documentary filmmaker by trade and usually makes films of the horror variety, like 2011's The Collapsed and the upcoming The Eternal with Michael Biehn. So Skull World is bit of side project for him. What he has delivered is a very unique documentary that serves as a fun tribute to Greg Sommer, his friend and colleague. (McConnell actually participates in the Box Wars and works with Sommer in the film industry.) So we have an interesting merging of objective and subjective matter, which the film hides from.
The filmmakers track Sommer over an approximately four-year period (2008 to 2012) during which we see his meteoric rise bringing his Box Wars tournaments to the masses.

Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. In fact, you could even count the last three Dead movies by George A. Romero as Canadian — after all, he is a Canadian citizen now and made all three films in Toronto.
