While in Austin at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, I had the opportunity to catch up with a variety of folks responsible for the modern cult classic Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which celebrated its 10th anniversary with several screenings as part of the fest’s midnight lineup. Those on hand for the interview included co-writer/director Scott Glosserman, co-writer/producer David J. Stieve, star Nathan Baesel, and co-star Ben Pace.
As it turns out, when you get a group of filmmakers who also happen to be great friends together in one room for an interview, things can get a little nutty. That being said, we have some great highlights from Daily Dead’s in-depth chat with the gang behind one of the more boundary-pushing genre films of the last several decades, including the risk involved with making Behind the Mask, the legacy of Leslie Vernon, how they...

The movie-making business is a fickle one, with projects oftentimes appearing one day, then completely disappearing the next. There are so many factors that go into making a movie that it's quite frankly a miracle so many movies actually do end up getting made. But what about the ones that are planned and announced, but never actually materialize? There are a whole lot of them, and today we take a look at a handful of horror movie sequels that found themselves stuck in the dreaded Development Hell. Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon One of the most frustrating stories in recent years within the horror genre is the story of the sequel to 2006's utterly brilliant cult classic Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon... a follow-up that, for whatever reason, just can't seem to get off the ground. Described as a "spreemake," meaning a sequel, prequel...

Horror as a genre is full of easy targets, which makes it probably the most lampooned genre there is. You have your Scary Movies and A Haunted Houses which spoof all of the recent successes in the genre as well as everything else but then you also have films that parody, honour and do something fresh with the genre.
Considering how common and repetitive the tropes of the genre are, it’s surprising that films such as Scream and The Cabin in the Woods don’t occur more often. There are sixteen years between these two films and in between these successes in revitalising the genre in a clever and self-reflective way, we have just gotten more and more slasher and haunted house flicks that simply just imitate them but on a purely surface level. Look at all the un-ironic stalk and slash films that came out in the wake...

Director Scott Glosserman wrote in to the Dread Central offices with an exclusive update on his next project, the long talked about Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon. Read on for the latest on this highly anticipated sequel.
Scott told us, "Kane Hodder is joining us for B4TM. He's officially attached, and we have a quote from him:"
"I was happy to be a part of the first film. Had no idea what, exactly, I was getting myself into. But Robert (Englund) asked me to do a favor and show up in front of the Elm Street house for a cameo, so I did it. In retrospect, I'm so happy to have been a part of such an intelligent, clever Valentine to horror fans. I've been shouting the praises of Scott's movie for several years now, and I'm excited to be offered a more substantial role in the next one.

Remember last fall when I told you about how the folks involved with Behind The Mask were turning to fans to help make the sequel Before The Mask become a reality? You probably don’t because it was forever ago and nothing has really happened since.

It’s almost hard to believe that Behind The Mask was released 6 years ago. Since then, director/writer Scott Glosserman has been working on getting Before The Mask off the ground. They’ve had a number of ways fans could support funding efforts in the past, but but now we have news on two interesting items for those that love the first film and want to see a new movie made.
The big news item is that Behind The Mask will be making a limited theatrical return. The catch is that enough people need to request it in your area with a new Theatrical on Demand service:
From Scott Glosserman: “I was so bummed out about our theatrical run, 6 years ago, because I knew there were people who wanted to see the movie, but it wasn’t playing anywhere near them. For B4TM I created a distribution mechanism that changes all that.

Ever since a sequel was announced during the Weekend of Horrors panel this writer had the privilege of hosting alongside the crew from Scott Glosserman's Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon a few months back, we here at Dread Central have been giddy over the promise of more exploits from one of the newest iconic villains of the horror genre and seeing what happens next with those who have the misfortune of being mixed up in Leslie's twisted little world.
We recently caught up with the madman behind the mask (pun intended), Nathan Baesel, to talk about the fan-fueled and fan-funded project, the similarities between himself and Leslie Vernon and a tease of what fans can expect from the next chapter in this growing franchise.
While announcing a sequel is pretty much business as usual in the horror world, Glosserman's announcement regarding his plans for his upcoming sequel,...

MTV has unveiled the trailer for The Truth Below , airing Sunday, April 3 (check your local listings for times). This is the latest film from director Scott Glosserman who previously gave us Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon . Here he's working from a script by Wendy Diane Miller who tells the story of a group of teens caught in an avalanche. Gillian Zinser, Reid Ewing, Ricky Mabe and Nick Thurston star. Glosserman might be moving back into Leslie Vernon territory next. His IMDb page now reflects the title B4TM , which we presume means "Before the Mask." Is a Vernon prequel on the way? The Truth Below - MTV Shows...

IMDb, as well as Leslie Vernon's official Facebook page (yes, he has one) have announced the long-awaited sequel to 2006's Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, currently titled B4TM. No news on what it stands for. I had originally thought "Before the Mask", but the IMDb shows the cast including Angela Goethals and Ben Pace reprising their roles as Taylor and Doug, which makes a prequel somewhat unlikely in my opinion. Scott Glosserman returns as director and co-writer, with David J. Stieve writing the screenplay. Nathan Baesel will be returning as Vernon and genre fav Robert Englund will continue as Vernon's "Ahab", Doc Halloran.
