Farm,” “Necessary Roughness”) as Max McGrath and Ana Villafañe (“Hiding,” “Los Americans”) as Sofia Martinez. Garcia will play Dr. Miles Edwards, described as a brilliant and mysterious scientist. And bad guy? The plot goes as such: The “Max Steel” film is an in-depth “origin” story packed with captivating characters and fast-paced action. The plot chronicles the adventures of 16-year old Max McGrath and alien companion Steel, who must harness and combine their tremendous new powers to evolve into the turbo-charged superhero Max Steel. As these two unlikely friends struggle to accept their oddly connected fates, they begin to uncover unimaginable secrets, working together to find the truth, and fighting the mysterious forces threatening their world. Stewart Hendler (“Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn,” “H+”) is directing the film from a...

Remember when that “Twilight” kid with the abs was supposed to star in a “Max Steel” movie? Well, that was a while ago. Whatever happened that “Twilight” kid with the abs, anyway? I bet someone wishes there had split the final “Twilight” movie into three (or four) movies instead of just two… Anyhoo. “Max Steel” is moving on, and it’s now set young lad Ben Winchell (Disney’s “A.N.T. Farm,” “Necessary Roughness”) and young lass Ana Villafañe (“Hiding,” “Los Americans”) as its male and female leads. During Black History Month, we are called to reflect upon the legacy of African Americans in shaping this nation's history. Images of proud women and men -- Sojourner Truth, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X -- are emblematic of the black experience for 28 or 29 days each year. But as February fades so too do the variety of representations of black Americans in film and on television.
All too often, depictions of African Americans are monolithic characterizations of our stereotypical selves, with top-notch actors vying for roles as maids, drug dealers, wounded women and crooked cops.
It's not that Tyler Perry doesn't occasionally recreate friends from our childhoods or family members we'd sometimes like to forget. And we can always count on at least three network television shows having a black doctor or police detective mixed into the supporting line up. But excepting the likes of True Blood's Lafayette...

I was getting around Los Angeles on Southern California’s most favorite form of transportation (I’m joking...Lol!), when, during a break from the Spanish language noticias, I noticed a couple of familiar voices. I looked up to see Jace Hall and Felicia Day talking shop on Transit TV in one La County’s 2,000 or so buses equipped with the digital network’s screens. "Pretty cool," I thought to myself. Apparently someone at the city’s Metro bus system and Transit TV thought showing web series to the 1,184,224 Los Angelinos who make daily use of the city’s public transportation services was pretty cool, too. The two entities today announced they will screen the online original series Los Americans on La Metro bus routes. Created by One Economy (a “global non-profit that uses innovative approaches to deliver the power of technology and information to low-income people”) and distributed by...

Passengers of the Los Angeles County Metro bus system now can watch full episodes of One Economy's groundbreaking web-series, Los Americans, delivered in shortened segments through the Transit TV broadcast network Monday through Friday. Hollywood icon Robert Townsend, cast members of Los Americans and representatives from One Economy and Transit TV hosted a screening of the series and answered questions today for a preview event onboard a Los Angeles County bus.
Los Americans, which features the Valenzuelas, a multi-generational middle-income Mexican-American family living in Los Angeles, is the first series of this kind to be featured on Transit TV. The Valenzuela family deals with many issues facing American families today, including unemployment, cultural identity and alcoholism.
"One Economy is truly meeting people where they are by bringing this program to Los Angeles County Metro bus riders," said Alan Greenlee, Vice President of Programs, One Economy. "This series is an engaging...

A frakload of updates today. Let's start in Caprica City.
If you find yourself in Vancouver on Saturday, July 23, you can meet up with fellow BSG & Caprica fans for a guided tour of Kobol. For details, go to The 13th Colony blog.
CNN has a really great article about Ron Moore this week which is mainly about 17th Precinct, but pretty much covers most of his career. Here are a couple of quotes from David Eick and Jane Espenson:
"Ron is the scariest writer I know" his former producing partner recalls.
"I'm not sure there's anything he can't do remarkably well. Even within the context of 'Battlestar,' there was such a wild panoply of styles and emotions -- action, tragedy, melodrama, comedy, philosophy, even music -- all of which I watched him nail."
"But he's also weirdly unpretentious," Eick said. "We'd argue about whether something worked, but never...

Web Series: Los Americans
For fans of...: Telenovelas; Parenthood; Lupe Ontiveros, Esai Morales, Raymond Cruz or Yvonne Delarosa
What it is: An affluent Mexican American family overcomes obstacles.
What's good: Looks TV ready. Cast so strong (and famous) it had us doing doubletakes—more acting experience then most new television dramas. Fresh take on the American family.
What's great: Very real yet very dramatic. Character and plot reign over gimmicks and sentimentality. Manages to educate us about common contemporary struggles in a gripping and natural way. With every episode, we felt something and we learned something.
What could be better: Sound is uneven and occasionally distracting. First episode may be too expository.
Addictive like...: Bottles of Cuervo—neat
Grade: A-
Review based on: Episodes 1-4

Los Americans is an eight-part series that focuses on a multi-generational, middle-income Latino family living in Los Angeles. The Valenzuela family deals with many issues facing American families today, including: unemployment, cultural identity and alcoholism. The series features Latino-Americans in a realistic and complex manner seldom seen on television or the Internet.
While the series portrays some of the experiences unique to the Latino community, such as the challenges of straddling two cultures, the series also shows that much of the family’s struggles can be identified with families from various socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. Following each episode of Los Americans, viewers will be directed to online resources and information offering solutions and help for the issues portrayed in the program.

To start with the good news, Sasha Roiz will be back on TV every week this fall. His new show, Grimm, has been picked up to series by NBC. Spoiler TV has the first still from the pilot, which was written and exec produced by David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, and we'll probably get more details about the show after the upfronts. For now, here are the basics, from TV Line:
A fantastical drama, Grimm stars David Giuntoli (Privileged) as a detective whose mission is to protect humans living in a world where Grimm’s Fairy Tale characters actually exist. Silas Weir Mitchell (Prison Break), Sasha Roiz (Caprica) and Kate Burton also star. The bad news from NBC is that 17th Precinct didn't make the cut. Not much to add that hasn't been said at the Battlestar Blog.
David E. Kelley's take on Wonder Woman hasn't been picked up either.

A round of updates to end the week.
First off, The Caprica Times has a fantastic new interview with Kevin Murphy that covers tons of lingering questions about the show, about Murphy's work in the second half of the season, some of the challenges they faced in production, and the plan they had for Caprica season two.
In the interview, Murphy lays out the main storylines for most of the main characters and throws in a few interesting tidbits about the first season that I don't think we've heard yet on the podcasts or elsewhere (the last minute retcon of Teryl Rothery's character, for instance). The article is a must-read, check it out on The Caprica Times.
He also confirmed that John Pyper-Ferguson will show up on Hellcats this season. Magda Apanowicz will guest star in the next two episodes and Brian Markinson has pretty much taken over Aaron Douglas' role,...
