Art holds the power of transporting people back to the past without the help of a time machine. Therefore, it is quite understandable why people give out millions and millions of dollars to acquire and keep some of these beautiful pieces of history for themselves. However, not many are as lucky as Eddie Murphy when it comes to purchasing art.
Eddie Murphy in Coming 2 America
When Eddie Murphy sought after the famous ‘The Sugar Shack’ painting by artist Ernie Barnes, he purchased the original piece for just a meager fifty thousand dollars which is basically pennies for an actor of his caliber. However, the shocking part is that while Eddie Murphy paid five digits for an original painting, the duplicate was sold to someone for a whopping sixteen million dollars!

On May 12, 1976, Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue played a gig at the Municipal Auditorium in Austin, Texas, that left little historical mark. Newspaper clippings from the week reveal that furious fans protested with signs outside the hall (“Boycott Rolling Thunder Ripoff”) when they learned plans for separate early and late shows were scuttled at the last minute, creating a general admission melee where seat assignments were suddenly meaningless. But it’s one of the few shows from the 57-date Rolling Thunder Revue that never surfaced in the collector community...

One of the songs from The Beatles‘ Abbey Road blew a 1990s rock star away. He said the song has “no lead guitars and things, it’s just grinding away at this series of chords.” The tune in question is one of several examples of The Beatles’ harder rock songs.
A star said 1 song from The Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’ encapsulates John Lennon’s style
Wayne Coyne of the psychedelic rock band The Flaming Lips. During a 2014 interview with Newsweek, he discussed being a massive fan of The Beatles. In it, he said “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” is one of his favorite Beatles tunes.
“Again, here’s a guy that writes these songs that are so expressive and so musical, and here’s just this very strange riff,” Coyne said. “At the end of it, there’s this chord sequence that’s a completely John Lennon-esque chord sequence.

John Lennon said The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” features an instrument he couldn’t “face.” He was asked about the band’s post-Abbey Road musical direction. Abbey Road was a hit in the United Kingdom during the 1960s and again during the 1980s.
John Lennon said The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” features a “fantastic machine.” In addition, the instrument appears on other songs from Abbey Road. John felt George Harrison could have taken a lifetime to master the machine.

The Moog synthesizer is an early synthesizer invented by engineer Robert Moog. The Beatles helped popularize the instrument by using it on Abbey Road. The book Lennon on Lennon: Conversations With John Lennon features an interview from 1969. In it, John explained why the band used a Moog.

Galantis’ Christian Karlsson didn’t know that the “different wiring” in his brain had a name growing up. It wasn’t until he was an adult that he was diagnosed with Adhd and he finally was able to bring “clarity to the chaos.”

Ratboys are back with a new album called The Window. The group’s latest LP arrives August 25th via Topshelf Records, and along with the news, they’ve shared a new run of North American tour dates and the lead single “It’s Alive!”
The Window marks the first time Ratboys bassist Sean Neumann and drummer Marcus Nuccio collaborated with guitarists Julia Steiner and Dave Sagan. Teaming with Seattle producer Chris Walla, the band spent two years working out the album’s 11 songs, with notes from Walla, before putting them to tape in 2022.
“The language Chris uses when speaking about music comes from a very emotionally centered place, and that’s something that resonated with us. He would say things like, ‘This cymbal hurts my feelings,’ or ‘This song is like a cat,’” Nuccio recalled in a statement. According to Neumann, “It was such a disarming thing. Some of the songs Paul McCartney wrote for The Beatles White Album drove his bandmates crazy. The other three universally hated “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” with a passion, especially since Paul requested they keep working on it. The Fab Four did dozens of takes of the game-changing “Helter Skelter,” a song Paul wrote because he was jealous about The Who’s bragging.

Jimmy Page wasn’t just a guitar player in Led Zeppelin. He wrote or co-wrote nearly all of the band’s songs. He set the artistic vision for the band. Oh, and he produced and mixed all their albums to make sure the sound coming through the speakers matched what he heard in his head. He was an artistic visionary in his own right, but Page copied a Beatles recording trick on the Led Zeppelin song “No Quarter.”
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page | Michael Putland/Getty Images Jimmy Page copied the same trick The Beatles used on ‘Rain’ for Led Zeppelin’s ‘No Quarter’
Page formed Led Zeppelin to push the boundaries of what was possible in music. He made playing guitar with a bow a mainstream move. The control room at the recording studio became like an extra instrument. His behind-the-scenes work on “Whole Lotta Love” made the psychedelic freakout section a mind-bending experience.

Imagine a New York where construction workers tap dance on steel girders high above the city, sorta like that famous photograph you’ve seen a million times, and where kindly landladies who once played Carnegie Hall might tutor a young Holocaust refugee to a Julliard scholarship, and breezy jam sessions do away with generations of friction between races, genders and sexual identities. Billy Preston is amongst an exclusive club of a few musicians who some refer to as the “fifth Beatle.” Billy Preston was a keyboard player who impacted The Beatles more than some may realize. Outside of The Beatles, Preston had an accomplished career, working with many of the greatest artists ever.

Some people are naturally gifted at playing instruments, and Preston realized his gift at a young age. By the age of 10, he was playing the organ for gospel singers like Mahalia Jackson, despite being entirely self-taught. At 11, he appeared on an episode of Nat King Cole’s NBC TV show and sang a Fats Domino song with Cole.
In 1962, Preston joined Little Richard’s band as an organist. While performing in Hamburg, Preston met The Beatles, who had been invited to be Little Richard’s opening act.

In the 1960s, Bob Dylan said that the only product that could make him sell out was “ladies’ undergarments.” Several decades later, he proved this was true when he appeared in an ad for Victoria’s Secret. Dylan has “sold out” several other times over the years, though. He does not seem like a celebrity who would appear in commercials, but he has, surprising his fans each time.

With hindsight, we know Ringo Starr was a crucial piece of the puzzle for The Beatles. Yet he sometimes lost sight of that fact. When Ringo complained about being the fourth wheel, the other Beatles gave him a bigger role on Rubber Soul. Never mind that his steady timekeeping and versatility helped the Fab Four win scores of fans around the world. Ringo praised his drumming as the centerpiece of the song “Get Back,” and he was right on the nose with it. Maybe that complaining and more prominent role on Rubber Soul and later albums paid off.

The rap world is ever-changing, and 2022 showed us where we might be heading next. The year was full of solid releases from budding stars who set the stage for a lower-key sensibility within hip-hop. It was a year where fans turned away from the larger-than-life superstars towards more down-to-earth figures in the scene. The rise of homegrown acts like Babytron and newcomers Ice Spice proved that hip-hop’s new landscape is abundant. In today’s rap world, there’s something for everyone.

According to Christie’s auction house, the sale set an auction record for Barnes’ work by more than 27 times the artist’s previous record, and was 76 times the high estimate of 200,000. The 10-minute auction drew 22 bidders before Houston-based energy trader Bill Perkins.

"Can't believe we didn't think this part all the way through." Amazon has revealed a second trailer for the romantic comedy I Want You Back, arriving on Prime Video just in time for Valentine's Day this month. They're really hoping that people will choose to watch this for their Valentine's Day date night, but I'm not so sure. Here's the entirely unoriginal concept: Newly dumped thirty-somethings Peter and Emma team up to sabotage their exes' new relationships and win them back for good. Jenny Slate and Charlie Day co-star, with an ensemble cast including Gina Rodriguez, Manny Jacinto, Scott Eastwood, Isabel May, Jami Gertz, Clark Backo, and Dylan Gelula. The first trailer launched back in December, and this new trailer isn't that much better. There's not that many funny moments at all, and the rest of it seems so bland. Here's the second trailer (+ another poster) for Jason Orley's I Want You Back,...

Peter (Charlie Day) and Emma (Jenny Slate) are total strangers, but when they meet, one thing instantly bonds them: they were both unexpectedly dumped by their respective partners, Anne (Gina Rodriguez) and Noah (Scott Eastwood), on the same weekend. As the saying goes, “misery loves company,” but their commiseration turns into a mission when they see on social media that their exes have happily moved on to new romances, Anne with Logan (Manny Jacinto) and Noah with Ginny (Clark Backo).
Terrified that, in their 30s, they have lost their shot at happily ever after and horrified at the prospect of having to start over, Peter and Emma hatch a desperate plot to win the loves of their lives back. Each will...

Carl “Chucky” Thompson, a producer and multi-instrumentalist whose slick samples of Seventies and Eighties soul underpinned some of the most popular R&b and hip-hop tracks of the Nineties, died on Monday at age 53, his rep confirmed to Rolling Stone. A cause of death was not immediately available.
In the Nineties, mainstream hip-hop started to move away from building tracks on obscure samples, choosing instead to craft songs around loops of well-known refrains and bass-lines from earlier eras. P. Diddy and his crew of producers — a group known as the...

Exclusive: Warner Bros has landed What’s Going On, a biopic of iconic soul singer Marvin Gaye that Allen Hughes will direct, and produce with Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and Andrew Lazar. The studio acquired a script by poet-playwright Marcus Gardley (he wrote the musical The Color Purple for WB) and the singer’s estate and Motown are part of the deal so there will be rights to use all of Gaye’s signature songs. This finally will bring to the screen the singer’s story, after many previous attempts by different filmmakers stalled or fell short of the rights needed.
“This is so personal for me,” Hughes told Deadline. “When I made my first film with my brother, we were fortunate to get “What’s Going On” into the trailer for Menace 2 Society, and it was a game changer in elevating the marketing of that film. Every film of...

Netflix Spain’s popular YA series “Elite” season four will premiere on June 18 worldwide. Among the service’s most popular programs in any language, “Elite” stands among the few series, international or American, to surpass the three-season mark at the platform.
The U.S streaming giant first announced season four just about two months after season three launched on the streamer and was seen by more 20 million households. The cast, including Miguel Bernardeau and Claudia Salas, announced the pickup via a video from their homes in quarantine. In late February of this year, Season Five was commissioned by Netflix, and two new key castings announced in Valentina Zenere and André Lamoglia.
The two newcomers will join the now superstar cast including series regulars Miguel Bernardeau, Claudia Salas, Georgina Amoros, Itzan Escamilla and Omar Ayuso, who joined the show in season three.

In the early 1990s, Stuart Matthewman, the writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist known for his work in Sade, heard a remarkable demo: a ballad that stretched out over nearly seven minutes, making room for daredevil falsetto and a bass line as elegant as a spiral staircase, building to a description of a sexual liaison so ecstatic that it lasts for days and eventually brings police to the door.

The “O” in John Legend‘s Egot represents the Oscar he won for co-writing (with Common) the music and lyrics to “Glory” from the movie “Selma” (2014). It’s an iconic song about equality that made the Billboard Hot 100 and also took home awards at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and Grammys. And Blake Shelton has never heard of it.
Aspiring “The Voice” artist Victor Solomon, a 22-year-old college student from North Carolina, performed the hit song during his blind audition in the Season 20 premiere. After John, Blake and Nick Jonas turned their “I Want You” chairs around, Blake started asking Victor innocent questions about whether he wanted to be a gospel artist. That’s when John leaned over and whispered to Kelly Clarkson, “He doesn’t know that’s my song.”

After the first two episodes of “The Voice” Season 19 blind auditions, coach Kelly Clarkson had an early lead with five artists on her team: Joseph Soul, Eli Zamora, Marisa Corvo, Madeline Consoer and Ryan Gallagher. Meanwhile, Kelly’s co-judges Blake Shelton, John Legend and Gwen Stefani each had four artists apiece heading into the third episode. By the end of the blinds each coach will have 10 artists on their teams, making a Top 40, so we’re almost halfway there already. Which coach do you think acquired the best artists on Monday night?

The next step in Jack’s quest to defeat God is spiritual, Billie announces at the top of the hour. He needs to find the Occultum, which the boys discover is in Jo’s possession. When Dean and Sam approach her, she’s not too keen on helping them and making an enemy of God.

The jukebox musical — or “catalog musical,” as some on Broadway prefer to call it — has been running rampant for more than a decade now, leaving both triumphs and travesties in its wake. But even after we’ve seen the lives of Cher, the Temptations, Carole King, and the Four Seasons transformed into musicals — or the songs of Johnny Cash, the Go-Go’s, and Alanis Morissette used as scores for fictional stories — nothing quite prepares you for Girl From the North Country. Not the first, but certainly the best, musical featuring...

In case you hadn’t noticed over the last five or six decades, Bob Dylan can’t be contained, not by any particular genre, persona, creed or even voice, and the same can mostly be said for Girl From The North Country, the musical, written and directed by Conor McPherson, that transports the hits and deep-cuts of a peerless songbook to a Depression-era, crossroads-of-humanity boarding house. Opening tonight in a Broadway production that both focuses and somewhat constricts the musical that seemed more physically expansive, more tonally dreamlike, in its 2018 Off Broadway incarnation, Girl From The North Country nonetheless remains a revelation in its uncanny interpretations of even the most familiar Dylan songs.
When Girl was staged at the Public Theater downtown, the production – same director, same creative team, mostly the same cast – was both mournful and celebratory at once, a downbeat tale of folks at their wits’ end but...

The rapper Max B — who has been in prison since 2009 but remains one of the most beloved figures in contemporary New York hip-hop — celebrated his 41st birthday by releasing “Hold On,” an exhilarating dancefloor missile featuring French Montana, on Tuesday. The single marks Max B’s first newly recorded solo offering since 2011’s Vigilante Season, and it’s a taste of more music to come later this year.
“Hold On” is relentlessly buoyant, with a pinging synthesizer melody reminiscent of classic Nineties house music, and a brittle funkiness that suggests early 2000s Pharrell productions.
