Back in 1980, author Philip Nicholson, writing as A. J. Quinnell, introduced the world to a man named Creasy, an American-born former French Foreign Legion soldier, in the pages of his novel Man on Fire. While Creasy would return for four more novels – The Perfect Kill (1992), The Blue Ring (1993), Black Horn (1994), and Message From Hell (1996) – it’s Man on Fire that has received the most attention over the year, being turned into a film that starred Scott Glenn in 1987 and one that starred Denzel Washington in 2004. Now, Man on Fire is serving as the basis of a Netflix TV series that’s set to star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) as Creasey – and Variety reports that a guest star on the show will be Bobby Cannavale, who recently starred in the hit Netflix series The Watcher.
Cannavale is taking on the role of Paul Rayburn, an “ex-Special Forces soldier who possesses a unique ability to read people.

If there is one thing you can count on from CBS, it's that they know when they have a golden goose on their hands, and it isn't long before they start dishing out those priceless eggs.
As a network that loves a good spinoff, it was only a matter of time before Fire Country, which saw success as wild as the fires it fights in the series, received its own interconnected show to branch out its stories and characters further.
However, unlike its parent show, Sheriff Country will focus on fighting criminal activity rather than renegade wildfires that the chiseled Max Theriot has to put on a shirt to put out.
There is not much information about the series at the moment, but that won't stop us at TV Fanatic from sharing everything we know so far about Sheriff Country Season 1!

An Eisenbergs Seite spielt „Succession“-Star Kieran Culkin. Sie spielen zwei ungleiche Cousins, die gemeinsam nach Polen reisen, um mehr über das Leben ihrer kürzlich verstorbenen Großmutter zu erfahren. Who would make for the more uncomfortable travel partner, Roman Roy or Mark Zuckerberg?

They’re cousins who are very different from each other and take a trip across Poland to honor their beloved late grandmother, who survived the Holocaust and escaped the country. Long-standing tensions between them resurface as they get deeper into their family history.
In addition to Eisenberg and Culkin, the cast includes Will Sharpe (“The White Lotus”), Jennifer Grey (“Dirty Dancing”), Kurt Egyiawan (“House of the Dragon”), Liza Sadovy (“A Small Light”), Daniel Oreskes (“Only Murders in the Building”), and Ellora Torchia (“Midsommar”). The Machinist director Brad Anderson’s sci-fi monster movie World-Breaker has just finished filming, and stars Luke Evans and Milla Jovovich.
Everything was so topsy-turvy during those 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes that when World-Breaker was announced last October, the production had a cast in place but wasn’t allowed to reveal who was starring. Months later, it’s been announced that Luke Evans and Milla Jovovich are the leads in the sci-fi monster film from director Brad Anderson.
Filming recently ended in Northern Ireland, and The Hollywood Reporter has the story that Signature Entertainment will distribute the film in the UK and Ireland. The news emerges as the Cannes Film Festival begins in earnest; production company The Exchange is hoping to find buyers for World-Breaker’s international and US rights at the festival’s busy market.

Succession's Kieran Culkin stars alongside Eisenberg in the film which proved to be the first major acquisition of the festival when Searchlight stepped in to acquire the movie for $10m.
While it certainly doesn’t grab as many headlines as the woes faced by other Disney-owned subsidiaries, Searchlight has proved to be one of the House of Mouse’s successes of the past few years, exhibiting excellent...

While it certainly doesn’t grab as many headlines as the woes faced by other Disney-owned subsidiaries, Searchlight has proved to be one of the House of Mouse’s successes of the past few years, exhibiting excellent...

Searchlight Pictures announced on Tuesday that its dramedy A Real Pain, marking the sophomore feature of actor-turned-filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg, will hit theaters in the thick of awards season, on October 18.
Eisenberg stars opposite Succession Emmy winner Kieran Culkin in the buzz title, which Searchlight snapped up for $10 million in the first major deal out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, as we were first to report. In the film, also scripted by Eisenberg, the pair play David and Benji, cousins who reunite for a tour of Poland to honor their grandmother, but see older tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family’s history.
Hailing from Topic and Fruit Tree, the film also stars Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Will Sharpe (The White Lotus), Kurt Egyiawan (Beasts of No Nation), Liza Sadovy (A Small Light) and Daniel Oreskes (Only Murders in the Building). Producers on the project included Ali Herting,...

Searchlight Pictures has set an October 18, 2024, theatrical release date for A Real Pain, the heartfelt comedy written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, who drew the film from his own personal history.
A Real Pain, which premiered to standing ovations at the Sundance Film Festival, follows mismatched cousins David and Benji, who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the pair’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.
“We are blown away by Jesse’s vision and craft in telling this hilarious and profound film,” said Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum when the film was acquired. “He tells a deeply personal story and makes it universal. We can’t wait to bring it to audiences around the world.”

There has been no shortage of television series centering the horrors of the Holocaust. Last year alone, Netflix’s “Transatlantic” depicted a group of resistors living in Marseille, and National Geographic’s “A Small Light” offered a retelling of Anne Frank’s experience through the eyes of Miep Gies, the woman who aided the Franks during their years in hiding. Though both of these series and those like them are important, Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” an adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel based on a true story, showcases something different. The show chronicles a family torn apart by war and hatred. Devastating, and profoundly moving, “We Were the Lucky Ones” illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.

Milla Jovovich returns to the genre she knows so well with World Breaker. She stars opposite Luke Evans from Fast & Furious 6 and Dracula Untold. Brad Anderson is in the director’s chair for this science-fiction film. Anderson is known for such bleak projects as Session 9, The Machinist (which famously had Christian Bale lose a scary amount of weight prior to playing Batman) and Transsiberian. He has been dabbling in TV over the recent years, having directing for shows like Titans, The Man in the High Castle and Peacemaker.
The synopsis for World Breaker, according to Deadline, reads,
“Five years ago, a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction. A father hides his daughter on an island to keep her safe while he prepares her for survival and the battles to come. But when the world is about to break,...

“Peaky Blinders” breakout Joe Cole enjoyed “little moments of levity” in his upcoming show “Nightsleeper.”
“I play a lot of serious, moody characters. But I read this role and went: ‘This is close to me as a person.’ I could be free and use my life experience, everything I have been through. I try to have fun in life and bring it to the parts I play. I haven’t always been able to do it, because I am usually killing people or stabbing them,” he tells Variety.
These days, Cole wants to be “stimulated and challenged” as an actor.
“I am working on a film now, these are Russian filmmakers and they tell dark stories, but they do it with levity. They don’t relentlessly bang you on the head. The story itself is grim enough, so find the humor!,” he notes, also mentioning a recent turn in “A Small Light” about Miep Gies,...

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Ali Wong won the award for best performance in a new scripted series at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for her role in Netflix’s Beef, which also won the prize for best new scripted series.
While accepting her first-ever Spirit Award, Wong thanked her co-star Steven Yeun, who was also nominated in the gender-neutral category, as well as the series’ creator Lee Sung Jin and executive producer Jake Schreier. “I wouldn’t be here without you. This is the best. It’s been such a wonderful journey with you guys, and I’m so proud that you guys are my friends, too,” she said.
The comedian also took her speech as an opportunity to give a “special shout-out” to the show’s catering company, Mario’s, playfully noting that her colleagues will “be so mad at me for letting out the secret that they’re, like, the best, but…...

When winners are announced, our users expect Christopher Nolan’s film to win the most with three trophies, while Greta Gerwig’s will go home empty-handed. Another leading contender — Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” — earned three nominations and will win one prize for actress Lily Gladstone. The other films that we anticipate will be recognized include “The Holdovers” for supporting actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph and “John Wick: Chapter 4” for stunt ensemble.

World War II is a subject that filmmakers return to every year. In 2023 alone, we saw the U.S. home front tackled at a universal scale in “Oppenheimer,” the sweep of European resistance in “All The Light We Cannot See,” “A Small Light,” and “Transatlantic,” indulged in the action-packed catharsis of a Nazi murder-spree in “Sisu,” and heard, if not saw, the horror of the death camps in “The Zone of Interest.” In 2024, we’re already looking ahead to Guy Ritchie fucking up Nazis in “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.”
More recent series recreate the era, too, including Tom Hanks’ and Steven Spielberg’s final installment in their TV miniseries triumvirate about the American war effort, “Masters of the Air,” Hulu’s Holocaust survival story “We Were the Lucky Ones,” as well as Baz Lurhman’s, Hugh Jackman’s, and Nicole Kidman’s return to sweeping WWII melodrama in “Faraway Downs.

Claire Foy and Richard E. Grant are set to lead a new period drama directed by Peter Glanz.
Titled “Savage House,” the eighteenth century black comedy also stars Bel Powley (“A Small Light”) and Jack Farthing (“The Lost Daughter”).
Kila Lord Cassidy (“The Wonder”), Richard McCabe (“Napoleon”), Vicki Pepperdine (“Poor Things”) and Pip Torrens (“The Iron Lady”) round out the cast. The film recently wrapped in the U.K.
“Set against the backdrop of eighteenth century England, a massive pox outbreak, and Jacobite uprising – this is a timely and darkly satirical story of Sir Chauncey Savage (Grant) and Lady Savage (Foy) and their blind pursuit of a better life,” reads the logline. “It is not without a tinge of irony that their family name is the Savages, for this is a Savage House indeed. Filled with duels, decadence, and bloodshed, this is a madcap play on class and power.”

Nat Geo, which is a linear network and part of the Disney+ universe, is not “immune” to the current idiosyncrasies of the television business.
Courteney Monroe, president of National Geographic, said the company is “very well positioned” to tackle the current malaise.
“I think no one is immune to the marketplace. But we are very well positioned… number one, we are a globally distributed network. We reach over 300 million households around the world, which is pretty staggering. It is a declining business but the linear channels around the world still account for a large part of our viewership. But we are very well positioned with a branded tile on Disney+,” she said, speaking at the TCA press tour.
This comes after one of her key lieutenants, Tom McDonald, EVP, Global Factual and Unscripted, recently said that “clearly, we have less money to spend than when I joined 18 months ago”.
