Michael Bellicher, the rising man in Dutch consultancy agency HC&P, receives an award from CEO Huib Breger. After another adulterous night with an ex, she's murdered at her home. Michael tries to cover up, but his wife finds out and leaves him with young son Kees. Once the police investigates Bellinger as a suspect, Huib fires him stat. Mysterious men, whom Michael catches ransacking the victim's and his own home, nearly kill him by arson.

On the run, Michael finds his credit cards and Internet access canceled. He hides out with colleague Gijs van Olde Nijland, only to escape to sister Kiersten barely after seeing Gijs tortured by CP&H's security chief Huib Breger's goons, who manage to fund him every time. Consultancy firm boss Bram refuses to believe Huib has a dark agenda, still suspects Michael of embezzlement and denies even knowing the mysterious Miller whose name keeps coming up. Businessman Johan Wolfson agrees to meet Michael and explains a risk analysis program he devised with the firm for Miller was officially abandoned because it needed illegal data, but was probably revived behind his back, only Wolfson is fatally poisoned. After another chase trough the harbor, Micahel meets the genius programmer, Vince Batten, who takes his side but doubts if the program explains why the national terrorism risk level is raised by minister Wolbert Allaart. When police comes arrest Michael for questioning, they are both shot at but Michael escapes, wounded.

Huib Breger's goons scare away the only possible police-contact. The whizkid's expertise and Michael's magnetic pass allow them to intrude Bram's office and find out he's in league with the Justice minister's executive aid Pepijn Wildbredt. While Pepijn is seduced by Michiel's sister, who remains loyal unlike his wife and parents, Michael copies his laptop. The whizkid works out how it fits in an elaborate clandestine network, thanks to which the terrorism code-triggering Interet data were successfully altered.

Michael decides against turning himself in to the cops, whom he chains to a tree and later hears on the radio have been shot, with him as prime suspect. He heads to Brussels to try, helped by the whizkid and his sister, to intrude at the EU summit, which is about to sign a treaty against the Muslim terror threat which only appears grim due to the massive Internet data manipulation. During the grim pursuit, security chief Huib Breger even kills Bram and the elusive Muller is found to be a mere plot figment of his 'Christian' zealot movement.
