In this year’s foreign-language race, a number of Lgbt-oriented titles are vying for attention. France’s Bpm (Beats Per Minute), directed by Robin Campillo, could be the favorite: a rich, sensual, impassioned study of early AIDS activism and gay awakening in Paris, it took the Grand Prix at Cannes and has been winning hearts on the festival circuit and kudos from critics.
After Cannes, Bpm (Beats Per Minute) played Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival among others, winning many awards along the way.
“Impassioned and deeply absorbing. Notable for both its hot-blooded sensuality and its intricate, bittersweet play with memory.”
- Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
“Broadly enlightening and piercingly intimate. A vital contribution to queer and political cinema. Campillo has given his movie the breath of true life. It grieves and triumphs and haunts with abounding grace and understanding, its heartbeat thumping with genuine, undeniable resonance.

★★★☆☆One of two films at Toronto 2014 that take in a group of friends over the course of one balmy Cuban evening, Return to Ithaca (2014) is the new film from French director Laurent Cantet. After the Palme d'Or-winning The Class (2008) and 2012's somewhat clunky Foxfire, this is another dialogue heavy character piece. Though more intentionally languid affair than both of those two films, it retains a political edge, exploring the country's recent history through the diverging lives of these five comrades. It is slow going for the majority of its runtime, but with such a fine ensemble cast, patience does pay dividends as rifts and secrets surface amidst pensive self-reflection and regret, both national and personal.

★★☆☆☆The second adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' cult 1993 novel Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang (the first starred a young Angelina Jolie), this time from Palme d'Or winner Laurent Cantet (The Class), returns the tale of a proto-feminist girl's club which goes horribly awry, back to its original fifties setting. It's convincingly-acted and admirably restrained, yet suffers from a hurried first act, before giving way to a long-winded, dramatically-sluggish remainder. A group of working-class teenagers in upstate New York come together in an attempt to wreak havoc upon the various males in their lives who have wronged them.

The big story
There's nothing like a good spat between Hollywood A-listers – so imagine our delight when Sylvester Stallone unveiled some high-level beef with Bruce Willis this week.
Sly appeared to label his erstwhile Expendables co-star "greedy and lazy" on Twitter, after negotiations broke down over Willis's role in the third installment in the 80s throwback action series.
The reason? According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bruce walked away from Expendables 3 after Stallone refused his demands for a $1m a day wage. He had been offered $3m for four days work, but wanted another million on top, according to a "source with knowledge of the situation".
Shortly after that news broke, it was announced that none other than Harrison Ford would be taking Willis's place. As Ben Child observed, the signing seems like a major step up for the action series,...

Francois Ozon's In the House (Dans La Maison), a playful examination of fact and fiction as seen through the prism of a student/teacher relationship, took away the top prize at San Sebastian Film Festival last night.
The director, whose film recently scooped the Fipresci award at Toronto, was awarded both the Golden Shell and the jury prize for best screenplay.
The Silver Shell for best director went to Fernando Trueba for his black and white study of a sculptor's reinvigorated lust for his work in The Artist And The Model (El Artista y la Modelo). The ceremony at the Kursaal auditorium marked a good night for black and white film, as Pablo Berger's silent film Snow White (Blancanieves) (about which, more here) took home the special jury prize, and saw it's young star Macarena Garcia share the Silver Shell actress honours with Foxfire's Katie Coseni.

I now have to accept the fact there will be several films showing at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival that I simply won't be able to see. I have gone to Cannes three straight years and this will be my third year in Toronto and of the six festivals I've never seen a line-up packed with so many highly anticipated films and today the fest added even more. Sending out the complete line-up today the fest has added three films to their Galas selection and 18 Special Presentations along with several Contemporary World Cinema selections, the latter of which includes James Ponsoldt's Smashed which is said to feature a performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead that may be up for Oscar consideration. The announcement confirmed Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master will be part of the Special Presentations selection as will Brian De Palma's Passion, a remake of Love Crime...

Terrence Malick. Mateo Garrone. Rian Johnson. Noah Baumbach. Joss Whedon. Neil Jordan. Francois Ozon. Joe Wright. Thomas Vinterbeg. Derek Cianfrance. All of these filmmakers, plus loads more, will be among those presenting new feature films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 6th to 16th. Of the 61 films announced this morning, Rian Johnson’s sci-fi actioner Looper will open the fest (a clear upgrade from Score! A Hockey Musical, to be sure), while the others are divvied up between Gala and Special Presentation screenings. Of note: rumors of Terrence Malick’s swift return to the big screen have turned out to be well-founded (barring some last-minute delay); his To the Wonder has been confirmed, along with a raft of well-received Cannes exports like Pablo Lorrain’s No and Mateo Garrone’s Reality. The most insane part of today’s already-stellar announcement is that there’s loads more to come,...

The fact this is only the start of the films announced for the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival is staggering. I don't even think someone's wishlist could have matched what we're looking at and there is still more to be announced. But we'll worry about what's to come soon enough, let's have a look at what will be arriving. First taking a look at the World Premieres we see the opening night film, Rian Johnson's time travel feature Looper starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt followed by the highly anticipated Wachowski sibling feature Cloud Atlas; Ben Affleck will bring Argo to the fest just as he did The Town; David O. Russell's The Silver Linings Playbook will have its premiere; Blue Valentine helmer Derek Cianfrance will premiere The Place Beyond the Pines starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes; Mike Newell's Great Expectations will also...

It's been a couple of weeks since the French magazine Premiere posted "Cannes 2012: Le buzzomètre," a list of over 30 films, each of which were assigned a numerical probability of its making the lineup at Cannes this year. Speculation has only grown hotter, of course, with an official announcement slated for April 19; Critics' Week and the Directors' Fortnight will follow on April 23 and 24, respectively. "Paris is rife with rumors about who will make it," reports Fabien Lemercier at Cineuropa. "Several films by 'big fish' have not been seen yet, and many who have already shown their film are eagerly awaiting news."
A few days ago, a French blog pulled an April Fools' Day prank that thoroughly ticked off Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux. The blog claimed to have seen the full lineup, "briefly published on the official Cannes Film Festival...

In this violent post-war culture controlled by men, a group of headstrong teenage girls unite into a sisterhood of blood: they form the Foxfire gang, a secret female-only society, recognized by the flame tattooed on the back of its members’ shoulders...(more) Cast: Comprised of unknown actresses. List Worthy Reasons...: It'll be a great 2012 for fans of the Palme d'Or winning director Laurent Cantet, as he explores both Havana (La Fuente) with his Sunday piece in 7 Days and with this English language first. With The Class, the filmmaker certainly felt at ease working with teens,...
